Congratulations to the following winners in the Harley Fundraiser:

1st Place: Harley Winner/name of ticket was Stella Fernandez.  Miguel Sanchez, pictured above, purchased the winning ticket.

2nd Place: Rich Berchin was the winner of Gabriel's Wine Basket.

3rd Place: KM Cruse was the winner of 2 VIP tickets to the Aerosmith & KISS Concert at the Verizon Wireless Theatre.

The Harley Fundraiser was a success raising $34,000 for scholarships.

McNair Scholars Program 4th Annual Research Symposium

Seventeen McNair Scholars presented their research projects on September 12, 2003. Faculty mentors guided these dynamic undergraduates onto a path that exposed each of them to new avenues on their intellectual journey here at Incarnate Word. The culmination of research completed over the summer was demonstrated in high caliber presentations and a display of knowledge from the scholars when questioned about content. Their demeanor and skills are a sense of pride in our academic community. Scholars will now take their work on the road; presentations will be made at other conferences across the United States. Congratulations scholars on your success. 

Synchronized Swimming

The Swimming Team of UIIW is putting together a watershow to raise money for the team. This will be the first annual Synchronized Swimming Watershow, titled “A Tribute to Texas!”

When: October 24th @8:30 p.m., doors open at 7:45 p.m.

Where: On campus, in the Natatorium.

General Admission is $5, $2 for students and faculty. Food and drinks are included.

This event will also include a silent auction to help with their fundraising. The show will last one hour, and the winners of the auction items will be announced at the end.

Intramurals

Any member of the UIW community is encouraged to participate in the Intramural program. To be eligible, co-ed teams must have two females participating. The Administration and Staff are greatly encouraged to form a team.

Fall Sports: (Oct-Nov)
Flag Football-$20.00 per team
Volleyball- $20.00 per team
Racquetball-$5.00 singles

Spring Sports (Feb-Apr)
Basketball-$20.00 per team
Softball-$20.00 per team
Tennis - $5.00 singles

Diversity Training

All full-time employees must complete four hours of Diversity Training before May 31, 2004. The following classes are available. The Spring Schedule will be published in November.

Senior Administrators (Vice-Presidents, Deans, Directors): Thurs., Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon –Library Auditorium.

Faculty (Full-time, Adjuncts and ADCaP) Only: Tues., Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to noon-Library Auditorium.

Staff and Mid-level Administrators Only: Thurs., Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon-ICC Auditorium.

MEET & GREET

MEET & GREET

The next Meet & Greet is scheduled at the Brackenridge Villa on Oct. 15. It will follow the Heritage Day Employee Recognition Ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Stop by and visit the offices of the Alumni, Development, Public Relations and the Vice-President for Administration.

Musical Performance

On Nov. 2 at 4 p.m., the Composer’s Alliance of San Antonio will present a concert featuring the works of Dr. Ken Metz & Dr. Misook Kim. This concert will display Dr. Metz’s work, Song from Mother Goose. It will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 7150 IH-10 W.

Heritage Day Events

The 10th annual Incarnate Word Heritage Day ceremony will be held on Oct. 15th with various events throughout campus.

11 a.m.- Classes and community members are invited to this special Heritage Day program in the Marian Hall Ballroom.

3 p.m.- in the Motherhouse Chapel. UIW will recognize and award all regular, full-time administrators, faculty and staff employees completing 10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45 and 50 years of service.

Everyone will be treated to a live performance of the Goretti Elegies for Brass Quintet. This musical tribute was composed by Dr. Ken Metz to honor the memory of his friend and colleague, Sister Maria Goretti Zehr.

FAMOUS FOLKS

Dr. Christopher Paris, Assistant Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences has been accepted to present a paper to the Fourteenth Annual Conference Toward New Systems of Higher Education, from Oct. 26-29, 2003 in Vilnius Lithuania. This international conference is sponsored by the Alliance of Universities for Democracy, and the American University in Bulgaria U.S. Office for Development and University Relations, Washington D.C. Dr. Paris’s presentation addresses the principles of transformative and inclusive leadership in higher education, and is entitled: “Education is Freedom: Academic Administration’s Responsibility to the Academy.”
