On May 14, UIW broke ground on their new $14 million project. The new building will have four levels and provide an additional 36,000 sq. ft. of space adjacent to the existing facility. The complex will house the latest technology and provide space for teaching and research labs for Chemistry and Biology. The project will include two phases; the second will include a $4 million renovation to the existing building. The building complex is being built in addition to the engineering program. The ceremony began with Patsy Torres, singing the National Anthem as well as a blessing by Archbishop Patrick Flores and Father Michael Cannon.

H-E-B School Of Business

H-E-B School Of Business

This year’s Spring Commencement will hold lots of memories. A press conference was held to announce the naming of the school of business in honor of H-E-B. The H-E-B School of Business became the second named school at Incarnate Word. The school will be located in the Gorman Business and Education Center. UIW also honored a long-time friend and prominent leader, Fully Clingman with the Insigne Verbum Award. This award was presented to him at the morning commencement services on May 10. The Insigne Verbum Award recognizes those individuals that have contributed meritorious service to San Antonio, South Texas, and UIW. It recognizes individuals who represent and carry out the mission of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

NOTICES AND SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

UIW Journal

It’s that time of year again: to begin planning your summer writing projects! So here’s an opportunity to do just that.

As many of you know, Phil Lampe and Julie Miller will be editing the UIW Journal again this year. The topic for the 2003 edition is “Putting Mission into Practice.” We feel this is a timely topic, particularly in light of the upcoming SACS review as well as the ongoing effort by the CCVI’s

To encourage that all faculty and employees take up the UIW mission in a personal manner.

We already have tentative commitments by several people to address the following topics:

  • The founding of the mission and subsequent changes to it through history
  • The theological basis for the mission
  • Catholic social teachings and the mission
  • The mission and the Catholic intellectual tradition
  • Challenges for UIW in light of the mission

If you are interested in exploring any of these ideas, please contact Julie Miller @283-5062 or Phil Lampe @829-3983.

The deadline for submitting is August 15th.

Magdalena “Maggie” Alvarado has worked at UIW for 1 1/2 years and has been assigned to St. Anthony since last August. On Friday, May 2, she found a bag of money at St. Anthony and returned it to security. Maggie is living proof that good, honest people are still around. “We want to thank Maggie and let her know that it is refreshing to know that she is part of an honest community in which doing the right thing is still important,” said Principal Dan Ochoa.
