A Surprise Celebration

Sr. Sally Mitchell was given a surprise reception by the Incarnate Word Community. This Golden Jubilee celebrated her 50 years of service as a member of the Sisters of St. Francis. Co-workers and friends gathered in anticipation on June 17 in the Special Collections Room. Sr. Sally was indeed surprised as you can see her facial expression in the above photo.

Congratulations

FAMOUS FOLKS

Dr. Tarcisio Beal, Professor of History & Director of the Brazil Studies Program (BSP), and his wife and Portuguese Instructor Neuza F. Beal, leave June 25 for Brazil. They will be accompanying and supervising 11 UIW students in their 5-week cultural internship in the capital cities of Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, in central Brazil, and Florianópolis, State of Santa Catarina, in Southern Brazil. Their hosts are the Federal Universities of Minas Gerais and Santa Catarina.

The students will stay with Brazilian families two weeks in each city and will intern in industries, businesses, schools, and foundations. They will conclude their sojourn in Brazil with a visit to the world's greatest wonder, the Falls of Iguassú, located on the borders of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. This is the third cohort of students of the BSP, partially funded through this year by the National Security Education Program of the US Department of Defense.

After this year the BSP is to become a permanent part of UIW's globalization efforts and is now in the process of recruiting 10 students for the 2003-2004 Cultural Internship in Brazil.

These are the students going to Brazil for this Summer's Internship:
