TOP STORIES
Works Of Art
Two
works of art were presented to the University of the Incarnate
Word just before Christmas 2001, and have been hung in the Special
Collections Room on the second floor of the J.E. and L.E. Mabee
Library. Recent visitors have noticed a painting now hanging on
each wall of the interior entrance to the Special Collections
Suite. Both of these paintings were given by Mr. Thomas Duckworth,
Accountant, Comptroller’s Office. The painting on the right,
or south wall, is an oil on canvass, 18th century German interpretation
of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary. The painting on the left,
or north wall, is an oil on wood, 18th century Russian icon depicting
the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. While the artist of each
painting is unknown, they were acquired by Mr. Duckworth from
Timothy Potter Gallery Ltd., London, England.
Just
before Christmas in 2000, Mr. Duckworth presented another special
gift to the university. That gift was two matching nineteenth
century Meissen porcelain triple-branched candelabra purchased
from Hirschel-Adler, New York. These thoughtful gifts have complemented
the room and added a distinctive note of beauty in that elegant
space. These valuable object d’ art will be appreciated as they
are shared with many others attending functions in the special
treasure room of the university. Please join the library staff
in thanking Mr. Duckworth for these unique contributions to beautify
our campus.

Play and Literacy Symposium

Hundreds of teachers learned the importance of play as they attended
the Play and Literacy Symposium on Feb. 22 at the J.E. & L.E.
Mabee Library. UIW began holding the play conference in 1997 in
an effort to showcase the importance that play can have on children
and literacy. This year the Joe Frost Play Advocacy Award was
presented to Mrs. Lila Cockrell, President of the San Antonio
Parks Foundation. One keynote speaker was Gareth Lewis, a representative
of the Green Schools Project in Sweden who has had a significant
impact in the Green Schools Movement to encourage environment-friendly
play.

The Community Wellness Program offers free fitness
assessments for faculty and staff. The assessment is a quick,
informative tool used to evaluate your cardio-respiratory endurance,
muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body-composition.
This information is used to help you develop a personalized exercise
and fitness program that helps you to reachyour fitness goals.
The Community Wellness staff can also provide step-by-step equipment
and exercise training session over part of your lunch break or
after work. Our facility, the Center for Well Being, has

machine, universal gym, and light free weights in a private environment.
The exercise area is available Mon. – Fri. from 12 noon – 2 p.m.

hand-in-hand with a healthy, efficient working heart and circulatory
system. Fitness is the key to providing the heart and other muscles
with the appropriate strength in order to keep you active. Don’t
miss out on the fun and the benefits of this program.
The Center for Well-Being also coordinates the high-tech fitness
program for our faculty and staff, ‘Fitness At Your Desk Club’.
Over sixty of our faculty and staff participate in a web fitness
program that provides instructions for exercises that can be performed
right at your desk. The issues are forwarded every two weeks from
the Center for Well-Being over the campus e-mail system. If you
would like to have your e-mail address added to our list, just
forward your address to rfrankli@universe.uiwtx.edu.
