St. Anthony Tree Dedication

St. Anthony Catholic High School planted a tree on Feb. 6 in honor of the seven Columbia astronauts who lost their lives.

Students gathered and prayed as the fig tree was planted in front of the St. Anthony Chapel. The tree was donated by 1993 alumni, Alejandro Calderon, Director of Enrollment.

Black History Month s being observed in the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Library with a display case featuring pertinent books and related items from the resource collections. A helpful bibliography is also available to suggest further readings and useful websites.

Feb. 13  Brazil’s Contemporary Politics and Economics

The Brazil Studies program presents a lecture on brazil’s politics and economics from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dr. Larry Graham, UT-Austin’s Vice-President for International Affairs will speak about current political and economic developments since new President Luis Ignacio de Silva took office in early January 2003. All members of the UIW community are invited.

UIW and the Playwork Institute of the Americas present the Play and Literacy Symposium IV.

Sessions include: Play environments, guidance, an environment for literacy, music and play, parent involvement/family literacy, literacy bags, culture and literacy, literacy play with three bears, science and math literacy play, Hispanic nursery tales, and several others.

CCVI Spirit Award

Nominations for the 2003 CCVI Spirit Award are due on Feb. 17. Nomination forms have been distributed in campus mailboxes and are available also in the Library. Faculty, administrators, staff, and students are invited to submit one or more nominations by giving a brief description of how the person has demonstrated the CCVI spirit both on the University campus and in the larger civic community.

The CCVI Spirit Award is given each year to a member of the University faculty, administration, or staff. All members of the campus community, lay and religious, part-time and full-time, are eligible. Selection of the honoree is made by a committee of faculty and administrators, including persons chosen for the award in past years. Presentation of the award takes place in connection with the campus celebration of Incarnate Word Day on March 25.

Nomination forms should be returned by Feb. 17. They may be dropped in campus mail and should be addressed to any member of the Selection Committee: Sister Margaret Patrice Slattery, Chairperson; Richard McCracken; Bernadette O'Connor; Sister Audrey O'Mahony; Keith Tucker; Barbara Herlihy; Sister Ann Finn; Kathi Light; Sister Martha Ann Kirk; Roger Barnes; Teresa Tiggeman; and Sara Kolb.

FAMOUS FOLKS

Lincoln College in the University of Oxford, Oxford England has extended an invitation to Anita L. Anderson, PhD, to participate in the spring session of the Oxford Round Table Discussions. This year’s annual session of the Round Table will be devoted to the topic of human and civil rights, with a particular focus on women’s rights and gender discrimination. Dr. Anderson is an assistant professor and a former chair of the Psychology department.

Michael Mercer, assistant professor of communication arts; Pat Burr, Ph.D., vice president for international programs; and Michael William Mulnix, Ph.D., associate professor of marketing, have had a paper accepted titled “Creating Direct Student Engagement for Student Retention: Hispanic Students and the Campus Newspaper.” The paper will be presented by Mercer and presents preliminary evidence that involvement of students in the writing and design of a campus newspaper may be of use in the development of an effective retention program.
