BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA)

The BBA degree program goal is to develop in each student a broad understanding of how the elements and processes of business organizations relate to one another and to the external environment. Degree requirements are designed to develop proficiency and confidence in the functional areas of business. In addition to providing the technical skills required for a professional level business position, the ethical considerations of business are emphasized.

Students who successfully complete the BBA program will:

  1. Be able to demonstrate an awareness of domestic and global social issues, and the role of business in solving them.;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge in the fundamental practices of business;
  3. Be able to demonstrate technological proficiency in preparation and analysis of an industry standard spreadsheet application;
  4. Demonstrate the ability to think critically and communicate complex ideas through writing.

Admission to Major in Business:

Students should apply to the major in Business Administration as soon as they are eligible to do so. To be eligible to apply for the major a student must have completed 32 semester hours as defined by University requirements and have at least a 2.0 grade point average. In addition, the student must have completed College Algebra (or a higher level mathematics course) with a grade of “C” or better.

The BBA degree program affords students the opportunity to select an area of concentration in a discipline of their choice, to include accounting, banking and finance, general business, information systems, international business, management, marketing, merchandising management, and sports management. In addition, students have the opportunity to complete a Minor in business administration, information systems, management, and marketing.Academic requirements for award of a concentration, and for award of a Minor with a concentration, are defined in the following sections.

In determining whether students have satisfied the requirements for a concentration, or for a Minor, “double counting” a course to satisfy more than one requirement is not acceptable. A completed course may be credited once only. As an example, if a business student successfully completes BINT 3331: International Business Management, the student has satisfied a core requirement. The student may not credit BINT 3331 again to satisfy a 3000 level course requirement for his or her concentration.

To fulfill requirements for award of a BBA degree a student must complete:

  4. Students may have an option to complete an Internship for credit. Refer to the Internship descriptions of each discipline for more details. All internships for credit require permission of the internship instructor and registration with the Career Services Internship Program. Internships are primarily an academic and/ or intellectual endeavor, with a primary goal of establishing the link between theory and practice directly related to the student’s major field of study. The learning
    agenda is established between faculty and the student, and includes an agreement on the job description and learning agenda. The weekly activities are reported to faculty and record of hours worked and the learning process is recorded in the Internship Office. Most internships require a minimum GPA of 3.0 and completion of 12 hours of study in the discipline.

Accounting is the means by which business transactions and events are analyzed, recorded, presented, and interpreted for various interested parties. The curriculum is designed to develop administrative decision-making skills and to prepare students for careers in accounting with public accounting firms, business firms, governmental units, and other nonprofit organizations. To fulfill the requirements for award of the accounting concentration, the student must complete:

This is a total of 24 semester hours for the accounting concentration. The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) requires 30 semester hours of approved upper division accounting courses, plus 21 hours of approved upper
division business courses, plus an approved 3 hour course in ethics (after June 2005), included within a total of 150 semester hours with a degree, as qualifications to sit for the CPA examination. Our TSBPA approved course in ethics is ACCT 4318, Ethics for Accounting & Business.

General Business
The general business curriculum allows students desiring a broad background in business administration to design their own area of emphasis, with the approval of their advisor. To fulfill the requirements for award of the general business concentration, the student must complete:

  2. 6 semester hours at the 4000 level.

Economics and Finance Specialization

Students specializing in “Economics and Finance” are prepared for careers in private and public employment in the fields of banking, investments, financial management, securities markets, and international financial markets. Students are equipped to function in today’s global business environment. The specialization is an excellent preparation for the M.B.A. and other graduate programs. To fulfill the requirements for award of the Economics and Finance specialization, the student must complete 27 semester hours of required courses, which include:

The purpose of the major in Human Resources is to prepare students for

The purpose of the major in Organizational Development is to prepare students for challenges related to improving organizational effectiveness and efficiency by increasing the capacity for individuals, groups and organizations to adapt to change. This includes those interested in becoming OD practitioners, as well as those desiring to learn approaches for introducing new methods or practices in the workplace, and in helping organizations solve problems and achieve goals. BACHELOR OF APPLIED ARTS AND SCIENCES

The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree is patterned after the traditional “inverted degree.” This degree format allows students who have completed two years work or an associate’s degree from a community college to complete a four-year degree without losing credit for most of their earlier work.

The degree plan has been structured to allow a student to broaden the technical/ occupational work with advanced study in at least three academic disciplines at UIW, with no more than twelve hours and no fewer than six hours taken in any one discipline.

Students who complete the BAAS degree will be eligible to enroll in graduate programs and, if they have selected their interdisciplinary module with care, enroll without prerequisite course requirements.

Admission Requirements: Completion of 60 or more hours, or an associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum grade point average of 2.5/4.0. Additionally, the student must have completed the Occupational/Technical Module in a discipline related to Business, Education, Humanities, Arts, or Sciences before admission into the BAAS major.

Degree Requirements: 128 hours with at least 42 advanced as specified below:

  1. Core Curriculum: 53 hours.
  2. Interdisciplinary Module: 30 hours at the 3000-4000 level. Thirty hours taken in at least three academic disciplines with no more than 12 or fewer than 6 hours in any discipline. At least one course must be
    designated “writing intensive.”
  3. Occupational/Technical Module: 36 hours. Thirty to thirty-six hours normally taken at a community college in an occupational or technical field related to Business, Education, Humanities, Arts, or Sciences. Typically, this work constituted the major requirements for the associate’s degree at the community college.
  4. Upper Level Electives Module: 12 hours as needed to meet 42-hour requirement for graduation.
  5. Lower level electives as needed to meet 128 hour requirement.

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS: BUSINESS

This program is intended for students who are not planning to currently complete the Bachelor of Arts degree but are interested in entering the field of business. Students must complete 34 core curriculum hours as defined by the University and the required community service hours. In addition students must satisfy the requirements in the concentration.
