TRIO Student Success Program

Specific Information

The Student Success Program is a federally funded program that offers a variety of FREE services and activities to incoming University of the Incarnate Word freshman and currently enrolled UIW freshmen and sophomore students who are either: first-generation in college students, Pell-Grant eligible students and/or students with documented disabilities.

Services and activities are tailored to each individual student and they include, but are not limited to:

Academic Advising

Program participants receive one-to-one advising focusing on creating the best schedule of classes possible to meet the student’s needs.

Learning Communities

Students, who qualify, enroll in one of the Student Success Program’s Learning Communities. The Learning Communities are designed to integrate the learning experiences of an academic area with the University Seminar curriculum that focuses on the skills needed to succeed in college.

Mentoring

Participants are paired with a junior or senior UIW student who mentors them through the university experience so that they become more comfortable adjusting to a new environment.

Individualized Tutoring

Participants receive one-to-one subject area tutoring to help them be successful in the classroom. Our tutors have flexible schedules so that they can provide tutoring at times convenient to each student.

Math & Writing Lab

A “no-appointment-needed” lab is available to program participants on a walk-in basis. Hours of operation include evenings and weekends.

Financial, Career, Personal and Graduate School Counseling

These services focus on students’ needs beyond the classroom. Workshops are presented on various topics designed to enhance the overall university experience for program participants.

College Success Workshops

Workshops in this series focus on the development of skills essential to college success such as: Goal Setting, Time Management, Study Skills, and Learning Styles

Summer Bridge to College Program

This program focuses on transitioning high school graduates and returning students into the university as well as acquainting them with UIW processes, services, and activities.
