Mentor Description
Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings beginning students together with caring peers who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee. A mentor is an upperclassman at UIW who, along with the TRiO SSP Program Counselor, provides their mentees with support, coaching, reinforcement and constructive example. Mentors are good listeners, peers who care; peers who want to help beginning students bring out strengths that are already there.
Qualifications
Successful mentors share the same basic qualities: concern for others, respect
for others, are active listeners, ability to empathize with others, see solutions
and opportunities, and are flexible and open.
Applicants must:
• Possess the basic qualities of a successful mentor as above
• Present ability to uphold and understand confidentiality and its limits
• Have at least a junior classification by Fall 2010
• Have an overall GPA of at least 3.0
• Be available to work at least one full academic year
• Be available for a minimum of 5 hours per week
• Schedule must be Flexible—Must attend and work Cardinals 1st Mentor
Program events, attend monthly mentor trainings, bi-weekly one on one
conferences with couselor, occasional TRiO SSP student staff meetings, all in
addition to bi-weekly mentor contacts with assigned mentees.
