Theatre students learn from experience

Experience is a part of learning at UIW, and a prime example of it can be seen while watching this month’s theatre production, Beast on the Moon, by Richard Kalinoski.

The cast is composed not only of young faces that can be seen walking around campus on a traditional school day, it also stars Mahmud Yusuf, Director of International Administration at the International Conference Center.

“It’s an incredible joy to come back to theatre after all these years that I’ve been away from it,” said Mahmud.

Mahmud is excited to be working with such hardworking, diligent people. Working with young people is an “incredible revival of the spirit,” he said.

Mahmud is a member of the Extended Run Players, a group of people ranging from young adults to senior citizens who along with the UIW Theatre Department believes that intergenerational experiences help to build a stronger community.

The focus of the production is on how the characters fleeing from a traumatic past realize that they need to reconcile with it before they can move forward.

Beast on the Moon was nominated by the American Theatre Association for best new play of 1995. That same year, the play also won the 1995 Annual Elizabeth Osborn Award for an emerging playwright, among many previous awards.

The character of Aram has been double-casted so that the audience can see the uniqueness that each individual brings to a production.

Baseball dream on its way to reality...

Second baseman Michael Rodriguez came to UIW to play baseball right after graduating from Business Careers High School in San Antonio, Texas. After getting accepted to UIW the only challenge left for him was to make the team.

He wasn’t recruited to play with the Crusaders; he chose to try out. Rodriguez chose not to give up on his dream, and he made it.

Now, minor league baseball is giving him a chance to practice alongside the Baltimore Orioles during spring camp where he will get the chance to try out for their team.

Rodriguez is grateful that he has been given this opportunity, “only a handful (of college baseball players) get to make it to where I’m at right now,” he said.

Rodriguez was one of two San Antonio players who were selected to practice in the minor leagues. During junior year in college, scouts carefully watch a team’s statistics, then during senior year, the scout decides which players to come watch.

Rodriguez acknowledges the help received on and off the field from all of the baseball coaching staff at UIW, including Steve Heying, who is now Director of Facilities Management. The coaches are involved in setting up times that the scouts can come out and watch their players, but the scout’s identity is kept secret at all times.

Rodriguez is 22 years-old and is currently working on his Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Systems with a minor in Management. He is as good in class as he is on the field.

When not caught studying, Rodriguez can be found at the Technical Support Services Help Desk where he is employed as a work-study. And in the evenings, he shows his support for the community by spending some time at the batting cages, where he helps high school kids to work on hitting their fast pitch.

“I never expected any of this to happen,” said Rodriguez. But his dreams are slowly taking shape and maybe soon he will be playing on the same field where his favorite baseball player, Cal Ripken Jr. once made his dreams come true.

Famous Folks

Dr. Michael Mulnix from the School of Business and Dr. Esther Elena López from St. Lawrence University (Canton, New York) have presented three articles in the past several months including: "Integrating Spiritual Philosophies into Teaching: Toward a Symmetric Model of Engaged Pedagogy" at the 2001 Symposium in Sino-American Cooperation in Education forum at Guangxi University in Guilin, China, held last August; "Models of Excellence in Multicultural Colleges and Universities" at the National Association of Hispanic and Latino Studies international conference in Cancun, Mexico, Aug. 29-Sept. 3; and "Integrating Spiritual Philosophies into Teaching Counselor Education" at the North Atlantic Regional Association for Counselor Education and Supervision annual conference held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Oct. 5-7. The presentation will soon be published in the Journal of Intercultural Disciplines.

Randall Bowden, Ph.D., and Michael Mulnix, Ph.D., submitted a research paper entitled "Globalization: Comparing International Business Communities" to the International Business and Economics Conference. The paper was accepted to be presented January 3-6, 2002 in San Francisco, CA. The research is an extension of the work they completed while in Belgium during the summer of 2001. The research strongly suggests that management issues in Europe may significantly change because of globalization, if the United States' influence of fiscal thinking dominates the European market. Social concerns may begin to diminish to provide greater financial success.

Ask U.R. Fit...

Dear U-R-Fit,

I have trouble running or just jogging because my legs and feet seem to hurt so much afterwards. I love to use the UIW jogging trail; I just can’t seem to stand the pain. Help!

Sincerely,
“Painfully sore from knees to toes”

Dear Painfully sore from knees to toes,

First, I would check with your doctor to see of there is any medical situation you may not be aware of exists in your legs and/or feet. You could have suffered some trauma in them and it is just now starting to surface. Better safe than sorry!

Next, I would make sure I was wearing the appropriate shoes because not all shoes are made for all activities. Your ankles, arches, and especially shins need proper support and cushioning when running.

I would also suggest you add or increase your warm-up stretches before taking off on a jog. Your body needs proper prep before taking on the intense stresses of jogging.

Good luck Sore from knees to toes! Oh yea…visit the Center for Well Being for more help with this problem, or call ext. 3815 on campus.

Happy Trails,
U-R-Fit
