New job? Newly married? New arrival in the family?

Simply send us your email address and recent news so we can share your accomplishments in a future issue of The Word: lisas@uiwtx.edu, or call the Alumni Office at (800) 584-5322. Visit our web site at www.uiw.edu regularly to keep up with UIW news, such as details on Homecoming. You can also participate in our Online Alumni Directory and receive the monthly email newsletter. You will find more and more interesting information online at UIW as we keep pace with the electronic age - it's convenient, and it helps save paper and postage costs. We look forward to hearing from you.

Want to Network?

If you would like help searching for a job, locating former students or just distributing information, you can register for UIW's Online Alumni Directory. The Directory is for all alumni and past students with computer capability and a desire to communicate with one another.

Once the Alumni Office verifies your status, you can enter and update your own information using a secured username and password you create to safeguard your entries. So far, nearly 850 former students have registered with the network.

To join the Directory, visit www.uiw.edu/alumni/anet/ and follow the easy instructions. And remember, registration is not automatic; you will receive an email once your status has been verified and your registration validated.

Credit Card $

Thanks to all who regularly use their MBNA UIW affinity credit card. As you know, UIW receives a percentage quarterly on all credit card use and it doesn't cost alumni or the university anything extra. We now receive annual revenue of $4,000 from MBNA, which goes directly to the Faculty Development Endowment to continue to improve the quality of classroom teaching. And, we can use the revenue for matching Federal dollars, so it's a win-win.

McCracken Alumni Referral Scholarship

The Executive Council of the University, in conjunction with the offices of Admissions, Public Relations, Alumni, and Financial Assistance, established a student scholarship opportunity called the McCracken Alumni Referral Scholarship (MARS) program. MARS was established to recognize UIW alumni as effective participants in recruiting new students. Alumni are uniquely qualified to assist us in passing on the "legacy" and helping to strengthen the connection between our graduates and the university.

MARS was named in honor of Richard McCracken, long-time dean of alumni, in recognition of his many years of service and loyalty to UIW and its graduates. The program asks UIW alumni to identify prospective students who will benefit from UIW education and uphold the mission of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Students receiving this award must meet the guidelines outlined below:

Students selected to receive the MARS award will be notified by mail. You can download a nomination form at www.uiw.edu/alumni/, or we can mail one at your request: Alumni Office (800) 584-5322.

Wordstock Celebrates UIW's New Academic Year

What better way to kick off “back to school” than with a festival! UIW will host its annual Wordstock Festival on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m., to welcome all students, alumni, and the San Antonio community to the new academic year. There will be food, beverages, music, and games for all ages -- and more.

The UIW community, alumni, family, friends and the San Antonio community are all welcome. Come to the McDermott Convocation Center grounds and you'll see colorful displays and booths lined up with refreshments and activities underway for the whole family. You won't want to miss this Texas-style welcome with UIW's personal touch.

Public admission is $5.00; children under age 12 are free. Students and employees of UIW and its partner high schools are admitted free (present your ID at the entrance). Proceeds benefit the San Antonio Educational Partnership Endowment, the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the Endowed Scholarship at UIW. Sponsors of this event are Bud Light, Coca-Cola and Z106 radio station.  For more information, call (210) 829-6007.
