2000 - 2001 Highlights

Robert L. Ryan, Ph.D., currently holds the position of acting dean of the School of Business. Dr. Ryan has been a part of the Incarnate Word family since 1988 and has served as an associate professor of management, lecturer in business and as the chair of the undergraduate business studies department. He was appointed to the dean's position last June.

Only the wall frames from the old Katherine Ryan Center and Education Building remain standing as of today. In its place a new two-story building will be built and will house the School of Education and the School of Business faculty and classrooms. The new building is scheduled for completion next summer.

Mark Papich was named as the school's new athletic director in July. He has been with the university for the last six years, first coming to UIW as an assistant volleyball coach. This fall, Papich is in his sixth season as the head women's volleyball coach. His UIW career highlights include winning the NAIA Southwest Regional Tournament in 1997 and advancing to the national championship for the first time ever.

The UIW Business Office located on the first floor of the Administration Building got a complete make over this summer. The office space now glows with its new white walls and blue trim to compliment the spacious service desks that are now equipped with the latest technology.

With time comes change and an overflow of traffic into the campus. To help with the traffic issue, a new entrance was made at the intersection of Burr Road and Broadway. The entrance now has a four-way traffic light that also makes crossing for pedestrians and the UIW community safer across Broadway.

After a yearlong search, David Elizandro, Ph.D., was selected as the new dean of the School of Science, Mathematics and Engineering. His appointment became effective in July. Elizandro came to UIW from Tennessee Technological University where he taught for the last eight years in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering.

Pat LeMay Burr, Ph.D., was appointed to the position of dean of International Programs and Initiatives in June. She has been with the university for the last 13 years and most recently served as the dean of the School of Business for the last two years. As dean, she will be responsible for promoting a global perspective consistent with the contemporary UIW educational mission, including globalization of the curriculum and campus environment.

Terry Dicianna, PhD., joined the Incarnate Word administrative team in August as the vice president for Extended Academic Programs and acting Provost. During the Oct. 12 Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Dicianna was named as UIW Provost.
