<p><strong>Dr. Rebecca Attridge</strong>, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the Feik School of Pharmacy, published “Internal Medicine: A Guide to Clinical Therapeutics,” in January 2013. Her book is a peer-reviewed, clinical guide that highlights important therapeutic options for the most common disease states managed by clinicians practicing internal medicine.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Boswell-Stephanie.jpg"><img class="alignleft  wp-image-5560" alt="Boswell, Stephanie" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Boswell-Stephanie-e1363277033961-150x150.jpg" width="90" height="90" /></a>Dr. Stephanie Boswell’s</strong>, assistant professor of psychology, study “Predicting Trainee Ageism Using Knowledge, Anxiety, Compassion, and Contact with Older Adults” was published in “Education Gerontology,” in November 2012. The study used multiple regressions to investigate the relationship between knowledge of aging, aging anxiety, and the degree of older adult contact with ageism in undergraduates training for careers in allied health and mental health settings. It also investigated the relationship between compassion and ageism.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Burr-Pat-LeMay.jpg"><img class="alignleft  wp-image-5562" alt="Burr, Pat LeMay" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Burr-Pat-LeMay-e1363277361697-150x150.jpg" width="90" height="90" /></a>Dr. Pat LeMay Burr</strong>, professor and distinguished chair of international business, was awarded the 2012 Women’s Leadership Award for Public Service/Education. She was honored by the “San Antonio Business Journal” at a special awards luncheon on Oct. 5. The award recognizes women who have achieved success while serving as an elected official, governmental employee or educator.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Buzzelli-Andrew.jpg"><img class="alignleft  wp-image-5563" alt="Buzzelli, Andrew" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Buzzelli-Andrew-e1363276730857-148x150.jpg" width="89" height="90" /></a>Dr.</strong> <strong>Andrew</strong> <strong>Buzzelli</strong><span style="font-family: MinionPro-Regular; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: MinionPro-Regular; font-size: small;">, </span></span>dean of the Rosenberg School of Optometry, was invited to present a lecture series Jan. 10-13 at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences, Berlin, Germany. The university, one of the largest and oldest in Germany, is host to the International Studies Program of Salus University. The program awards degrees of Master of Clinical Science to practicing optometrists throughout Europe and Asia. Buzzelli’s topics covered the vision examination of children, pediatric ocular disease diagnosis and treatment and disabilities of visual perception. Buzzelli is one of only 36 optometrists worldwide awarded Diplomate status in Binocular Vision and Visual Perception by the American Academy of Optometry.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong>Dr. William Carleton</strong>, professor and chair of the human performance program, Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing, received the 2012-2013 Robert J. Connelly Faculty Leadership Award.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Felix-Ortiz-Marie-1.jpg"><img class="alignleft  wp-image-5576" alt="Felix-Ortiz, Marie 1" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Felix-Ortiz-Marie-1-e1363277126760-150x150.jpg" width="90" height="90" /></a>Dr. Maria Felix-Ortiz</strong><span style="font-family: MinionPro-Regular; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: MinionPro-Regular; font-size: small;">, </span></span>assistant professor of psychology, has been recognized by the San Antonio Police Department for seven years of volunteer work with their Crisis Intervention Unit. They recognized her willingness to ride along with them and assist in crisis intervention, her ongoing instruction of law enforcement personnel, her evaluation research of their training program which has become a national model, and her involvement of UIW students in CIT work as volunteer interns.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong>Sr. Germaine Corbin</strong>, CCVI, professor of theatre arts, has published “Myr shegin dy ve, bee eh. What must be, will be,” a memoir from collected letters to Corbin from Humberto Leal, Jr., a death-row inmate executed by the State of Texas in 2011.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Creagan-James.jpg"><img class="alignleft  wp-image-5568" alt="Creagan, James" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Creagan-James-e1363277169154-150x150.jpg" width="90" height="90" /></a>Dr. James</strong> <strong>Creagan</strong><span style="font-family: MinionPro-Regular; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: MinionPro-Regular; font-size: small;">, </span></span>director of the Center for International Studies, presented “Our Man in Havana” to the World Affairs Council of San Antonio in November. The presentation followed Creagan’s trip to Cuba.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong>D</strong><strong>r. Narges</strong> <strong>Kasraie</strong><span style="font-family: MinionPro-Regular; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: MinionPro-Regular; font-size: small;">, </span></span>assistant professor at the Rosenberg School of Optometry, has been certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. This is a rigorous process including graduation from a school or college of optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education, having an active license to practice therapeutic optometry in a state, District of Columbia, U.S. commonwealth or territory, and adherence to principles of the Optometric Oath. Additionally, the process involves the completion of the exam application requirements, which include the completion of 150 points of post-graduate requirements and evidence of three years of active licensure and clinical practice or completion of an ACOE-Approved Residency.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Foglesong-Paul-David.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-5577 alignleft" alt="Foglesong, Paul 'David'" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Foglesong-Paul-David-e1363284140937-150x150.jpg" width="90" height="90" /></a>Dr. David Foglesong</strong>, professor of biology, has been awarded a grant from the William &amp; Ella Owens Medical Research Foundation for $27,257 to support his research on the activation of DNA topoisomerases in human T cells. This grant will support two graduate students engaged in thesis research toward their MS degrees in biology in addition to funding research supplies. The grant is the third grant to Foglesong from this foundation and the fifth extramural grant that he has received in the last five years to support this research project. The total support he has received in this period is $155,865 which has provided support for eight graduate students in the MS program in biology.</p>

Her introduction to a book of poems, “Collected Poems of William Corrington,” was published in December.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong>Dr. Tiffany-Jade Kreys</strong>, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, participated in the American Federation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Walk on Saturday, Sept. 29. The event raised money for AFSP’s vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and assist survivors of suicide loss. The Feik School of Pharmacy raised the most money of any participating group in San Antonio.</p>

The Beijing Forum was organized by Peking University, which is the oldest university in China and was ranked 46the 2012-2013 “Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings.”</p>

<p align="LEFT">As part of the 2012 Mission Continues Faculty Awards, College of Humanities, Arts &amp; Social Sciences (CHASS) faculty member <strong>Dr. Julie Miller</strong>, associate professor and chair of cultural studies and religious studies, received the Sr. Eleanor Ann Young Award for Truth. <strong>Dr. Lopita Nath</strong>, assistant professor of history and Asian studies, received the Sr. St. Pierre Cinquin Award for Faith. And <strong>Dr. Pat Lonchar</strong>, associate professor of English and assistant dean, received the 2012-2013 Robert J. Connelly Faculty Leadership Award, named in honor of the previous CHASS dean.</p>

<p align="LEFT"><strong>Dr. Srihari Narayanan</strong>, associate professor and director of cornea and dry eye service at the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO), has coauthored a scientific research article titled, “Effect of TGF-β on Ocular Surface Epithelial Cells,” published in the journal “Experimental Eye Research,” volume 107, February 2013. The research was done in collaboration with the IOBA-University of Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain and the Networking Research Center on Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBERBBN), Spain.</p>

Porter is one of 10 recipients from across the country to receive the award from hundreds of entries. He received the honor, which included a $5000 prize, for his development of an anti-bullying app which was piloted at UIW’s Brainpower high schools in the fall.</p>
<p align="LEFT">In October, UIW Moody Professor <strong>Dr. Sally Said </strong> presented “Oil and Water: Competing Roles of Arabic and English for Transnational Literacy” in South Sudan at the Western States Rhetoric and Literacy Conference on Transnational Literacy at the University of Winnipeg, Canada.</p>

His op-ed column “Death Penalty Undermines Justice” appeared July 12, 2012 in the San Antonio Express-News. He served as the keynote speaker at the Bexar County Task Force Against Elder Domes- tic Violence in September on “Generational Diversity in U.S. Society.”</p>

<p><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Campos-David-2-e1352842278660.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4917" title="Campos, David 2" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Campos-David-2-e1352842278660-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>In May, <strong>Dr. David Campos</strong>, professor of education in the Dreeben School of Education, finished writing a book titled, “Educating Latino Boys: Looking Positive, Looking Forward.” The release date is scheduled for December. The publisher is Corwin, a SAGE company. He also co-authored (lead author) on a book titled, “Reaching Out to Latino Families of Eng- lish Language Learners,” which received an award on June 4, 2012 from the Association of Educational Publishers. The book was published by ASCD.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/James-Chapman-OD-e1352842563210.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4944" title="James Chapman, OD" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/James-Chapman-OD-e1352842563210-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a><strong>Dr. James Chapman</strong>, assistant professor of optometry and director of externship programs, will be involved in a unique, public-private partnership which is working to develop a new state-of-the-art eye and vision clinic that will deliver expert care by faculty and externs from the University of Houston College of Optometry and the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry. The proposed clinic will be housed at the historic First Christian Church of Fort Worth and the partners hope to have it open by January 2013. According to a program spokesperson, in its first five years, the Fort Worth clinic could provide top-flight care through more than 28,000 patient encounters and a world-class educational experience for 116 optometry externs. University partners will invest $400,000 in diagnostic testing and treatment equipment and nearly two million dollars of unreimbursed care per year. Eye care companies such as Alcon will provide medications, solutions and low-cost glasses for patients.</p>

Escamilla</strong>, general counsel, was a conference presenter for two sessions at the 52nd Annual Conference of the National Association of College and University Attorneys held in Chicago, June 27-30, 2012, with more than 1,400 NACUA members attending. For the first conference session, Escamilla presented: “Navigating the Federal Regulations High- way: a Review and Preview of New Laws and Regulations Affecting Higher Education in 2011-2012.” For the second session, Escamilla led the discussion group: “Minors on Campus: Institutional Policies and Practices.”</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Mary Ruth Moore</strong> and <strong>Dr. Susan Hall</strong>, professors in the Dreeben School of Education, recently published “Listening and Reading Comprehension at Story Time: How to Build Habits of the Mind” in Dimensions of Early Childhood.</p>
<p>Following a thorough vetting process, <strong>Dr. Sandra Fortenberry</strong>, assistant professor at the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO), has been announced as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Texas Optometric Association. This significant achievement reflects great credit upon the university, RSO and the entire faculty. She moves forward in the great tradition of service of UIW by being in a position to affect the health care of the millions of citizens of the State of Texas.</p>

The project culminated in two full performances of the classic Japanese noh play “Atsumori.” For one performance, Salfen played the role of the tsure and for another he sang in the chorus. Salfen also played the nohkan (Japanese noh flute) for a performance of an excerpt from the noh “Takasago.” Salfen served as editor and wrote two articles for “In the Noh: The Newsletter of Theatre Nohgaku.” His review of the film “A Surprise in Texas: The Thirteenth Van Cliburn Inter- national Piano Competition,” was published in “Notes,” the quarterly journal of the Music Library Association.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Gillespie-Maria-e1352843008560.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4933" title="Gillespie, Maria" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Gillespie-Maria-e1352843008560-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>Maria Gillespie</strong>, nursing instructor, has received the South Texas Nurse Image Maker award for the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing from the Texas Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. She also received an Ed.D in Higher Education and Adult Learning from Walden University.</p>
<p>In the spring of 2012, <strong>Dr. Stephanie Grote-Garcia</strong> chaired the annual conference of the Texas Association for Literacy Education (TALE) on the UIW campus. She also co-authored a book titled, “Literacy Trends and Issues” and is this year’s co-author of “What’s Hot, What’s Not,” an annual publication of the International Reading Association.</p>
<p>The exhibit “Iraqi Women of Three Generations: Education, Challenges, and Hopes for Peace” offers images and stories from <strong>Sr. Martha Ann Kirk’s</strong> research in Iraq in the summers of 2010, 2011 and 2012. The exhibit was generously funded by the Gülen Foundation, University of Houston. The exhibit was shown Oct. 11- 31, 2012 in the Fine Arts Hall at UIW and will be on display in November at the International School of the Americas and March 1-April 12, 2013 at Louis J. <p>Faculty members, <strong>Dr. Philip Lampe</strong>, sociology professor, Dr. Julie Miller, associate professor of religious studies, and Dr. Roger Barnes, sociology professor, have been editing and publishing a yearly anthology, “Verbum Incarnatum: Social Justice and Economics,” Volume 5, 2012, for the past five years. This anthology includes articles from scholars across the nation as well as UIW.</p>

She spent a week with the Taiwanese hosts in San Diego planning the pro- gram. The WCCI Conference will take place from Dec. 27 &#8211; Jan. 3 and include a Taiwanese New Year celebration.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Metz-Kenneth-e1352843373817.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4953" title="Metz, Kenneth" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Metz-Kenneth-e1352843373817-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>Dr. Ken Metz</strong>, professor of music, has developed a new method, Chord Tone Analysis, for analyzing tonal harmony, which he hopes will be a useful pedagogical tool for giving students a deeper under- standing of voice leading and help to analyze their own part writing. He also has completed two new works, one for solo vibraphone (Vibes 1, 2, and 4.1) and one for wind ensemble (Fanfare for Freedom).</p>
<p>Chancellor, <strong>Dr. Denise Doyle</strong>, was recognized by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) for her extraordinary efforts in the creation and advancement of UIW’s new optometric education program – the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO). The ASCO resolution stated “Dr. Doyle has brought a level of leadership and professional expertise to the establishment of the RSO that has resulted in its profile as a well-defined, excellence-oriented health professions institution guided by a mission of preparing future leaders in optometry through excellence in education, patient care and vision research in an environment committed to personal growth in a context of faith, human dignity and social justice.” In addition, in a statement released by ASCO, its Board of Directors formally lauds the work of Doyle in the establishment of the Rosenberg School of Optometry, “which has brought great credit to the School, the university and the optometric profession.”</p>

<p><strong>Drs. Amy Crocker</strong>, and <strong>Susan Smith</strong>, of the School of Physical Therapy were selected as joint recipients of the 2012 Young Alumni Appreciation Award from the Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions.</p>
<p><strong><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4600" title="Stringham, Mark" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Stringham-Mark-e1342467522527-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Mark Stringham</strong>, assistant professor of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, performed the role of Lepidus and Proculeis in New York for the Dramatist/Royal Shakespeare Company’s collaboration workshop on Shakespeare’s “Antony &amp; Cleopatra” in April.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Timothy Wingert</strong>, of the Rosenberg School of Optometry, was named a distinguished scholar and fellow in the National Academies of Practice (NAP).  NAP is composed of 10 Academies representing health care practice in the areas of dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, rodiatric medicine, psychology, social work, and veterinary medicine.  Only 150 active distinguished practitioners may be elected to each Academy. Wingert is also a Fullbright Scholar and past president of the Missouri Optometric Association.</p>
<p><strong><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4598" title="Said, Sally 1" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Said-Sally-1-e1342467500763-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Dr. Sally Said</strong>, professor of Spanish, has been appointed as the 2012-2013 Moody Professor.  Selection of the Moody Professor is based upon the recommendation of the faculty senate, the academic deans, and the provost in recognition of scholarship, teaching excellence and community service. As Moody Professor, Said will present two public lectures on a topic of her choice, one at UIW and one at Our Lady of the Lake University.</p>
<p>Assistant professors <strong>Dr. Tanja Stampfl</strong>, of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; <strong>Dr. Helmut Gottlieb</strong>, of the Feik School of Pharmacy; <strong>Dr. Osman Özturgut</strong>, of the Dreeben School of Education; and <strong>Dr. Veronica Acosta</strong>, of the School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering were selected as the recipients of the Provost’s Legacy Teaching Award for their commitment, within their first five years at UIW, to keeping alive the rich tradition of teaching excellence that characterizes the university.</p>

Johnson School of Public Affairs in an International Strategic Crisis Negotiation Exercise.  Run by the U.S. Army War College and UT, the two-day exercise included several U.S. Ambassadors and high-ranking military officers participating as mentors for “delegations” from various countries.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4523" title="Boswell, Stephanie" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Boswell-Stephanie-e1342467416298-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Assistant professor of psychology <strong>Dr. Stephanie Boswell’s</strong> article, “I Deserve Success: Academic Entitlement Attitudes and their Relationships with Course Self-Efficacy, Social Networking, and Demographic Variables,” was published in the journal of Social Psychology of Education in April.  Her article, “Old People are Cranky: Helping Professional Trainees’ Knowledge, Attitude, Aging, Anxiety, and Interest in Working with Older Adults,” appears in “Educational Gerontology.”</p>
<p>During March, the Religious Studies faculty participated in interfaith activities on campus and in the community.  Adjunct professor <strong>Simone Brown</strong> moderated an Interreligious Dialogue Panel: “Food in a Religious Setting” for educators of young children at the 12th Diversity Conference of the Jewish Federation sponsored by UTSA.  <strong>Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, CCVI</strong>, professor of religious studies, helped direct the “Where in the World is Compassion” conference held at UIW.  The conference included participants from all over Texas and the Middle East.</p>

Burr’s Academy traveled to Quantico, Va., where FBI recruits receive their initial training. The group received briefings at the FBI Central Office in Washington, D.C. and visited the Special Operations Center. She also joined the Alumni Association of Former Academy Members and now serves on their board of directors.</p>
<p>“It was the opportunity of a lifetime,” Burr says. “I would never otherwise have had an opportunity to be inside the Quantico training facility, meet FBI leadership, or learn what the FBI does on a daily basis. I have a new and profound respect level for their integrity, work ethic, endurance, stamina, and commitment. They are an amazing group.”</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Melinda Adams</strong>, associate professor of fashion management, received an invitation from Bexar County Economic Development to participate as a local subject matter expert on the U.S. fashion industry at a forum for delegates from the Hai Yang People’s Congress and Sweater Industry Association on Dec. 7.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Brian McBurnett</strong>, associate professor of chemistry, was recently awarded a Fulbright Fellowship. He will use the Fulbright on a sabbatical to teach and research in chemistry in Rio and Brazil at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, a UIW sister school.</p>
<p>The National Association of Pastoral Musicians honored <strong>William Gokelman</strong>, professor of music, for his “Mass of Renewal,” co-composed with David Kauffman. The “Mass of Renewal,” won first place in the new Mass settings competition out of 150 entries. It is also being used at UIW’s Our Lady’s Chapel and was selected for use by parishes all over the country when the Catholic Church introduced the new Mass language.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Kevin Salfen</strong>, assistant professor in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, was elected secretary of Theatre Nohgaku, an international troupe specializing in Japanese- and English- language noh, an area of his research. He studied this form of theatre while living in Japan for two years and took lessons in dance and singing. Salfen also wrote program notes for the Nov. 14 Dallas concert of the Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet, and attended the National Conference of the American Musicological Society (AMS) from Nov. 10-13, where he represented the Southwest Chapter of the organization at the AMS Council meeting.</p>
<p>In Dec. 2011, <strong>Dr. Timothy Henrich</strong>, professor of sports management and kinesiology, was re-elected vice president and commissioner of physical education for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Council for Health Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance in Cairo. He was also named founding co-editor-in-chief for Cairo of the Middle East Research Journal of Research, along with Dr. Farouk Abdel-Wahab of Minia University. Henrich also received the 2012 Presidential Award for Meritorious Service and Scholar from the Egyptian Sports Science Counsel and Olympic Committee.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. David Foglesong</strong>, associate professor of biology, has received a grant for $18,275 from the William and Ella Owens Medical Research Foundation to support his research entitled “Cytotoxicity of antitumor drugs for human HuT 78cells activated by interleukin-2.” This represents a continuation of research currently funded by the foundation in Foglesong’s laboratory. Altogether, Foglesong has now received four extramural grants totaling $119,608 to support his research in the past four years. These grants have provided support for six graduate students who have done thesis research for their Master of Science in biology under his supervision.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Julian Davis</strong>, assistant professor of chemistry, reported that the UIW Department of Chemistry was awarded a Welch Department Grant from the Welch Foundation in the amount of $35,000 for 2012-2013. The support will go toward the department’s Summer Welch Research Program where students have the opportunity to work full-time on a research project under the direction of faculty members. Chemistry, biology, nutrition or related science majors gain valuable experience doing such laboratory research.</p>
<p>“Thanks to Education, Reconciliation and Hope Arise,” on research in Iraq was completed by <strong>Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, CCVI</strong>, professor of religious studies, and Sr. Patricia Madigan, OP, and appears on page 13 of the Dec. 2011 edition of “Aurora Magazine” of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, Australia (www.mn.catholic.org.au) The magazine has a circulation of 70,000. From Jan. 13 through Feb. 10 they also had an exhibit of images and stories, “Iraqi Women of Three Generations: Challenges, Education, and Hopes for Peace,” at the Incarnate Word High School Library.</p>

<p>As the newly elected president of the South West Association of PreLaw Advisors (SWAPLA), <strong>Dr. Gary Keith</strong>, assistant professor of political science, chaired the SWAPLA board meeting in Nov. 2011. Keith also accompanied government majors Leah Smith and Victor Reyes to compete in the National Undergraduate Moot Court Tournament Jan. 13-14 at Chapman University Law School in Orange, Calif.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Paul Messina</strong>, assistant professor of mathematics, competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in international air pistol.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Matthew Gonzalez</strong>, assistant professor of business in Extended Academic Programs, presented his research paper, “Emotional Intelligence within Project Management,” at the Harvard Faculty Club for the Association of Global Management Studies March 5-6.</p>
<p>Under the leadership of <strong>Dr. Amalia Mondriguez</strong>, professor in the College of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences, Modern Languages sponsored the first annual “Fiesta de Reyes” for UIW. The celebration of “The Three Kings” is a major event in Spain and students in the Spanish culture and civilization class also took part in the event, along with the UIW community, the Puerto Rican Society, and San Antonio community members.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Brian Kinnaird</strong>, professor of criminal justice in Extended Academic Programs, was invited to present as a keynote speaker in January at both the Guadalupe Valley Peace Officer Association’s quarterly meeting and the FBI Regional Command College Luncheon to discuss law enforcement issues.</p>
<p>In February, <strong>Dr. John Velasquez</strong>, assistant professor of psychology, hosted a 10-year reunion for Presa interns. For the past ten years, approximately 60 psychology majors have completed their internship at the Presa Community Center. The partnership between UIW and Presa was started with a Department of Housing and Urban Development grant in 2002, and psychology interns have conducted work at Presa for the past 30 consecutive semesters under the direction of Velasquez.</p>

At the conference, she presented her paper on “Ethnic Identity, Forced Migration and the Creation of Diaspora: The Lhotshampa Exodus from Bhutan.”</p>
<p><strong>James Borders</strong>, assistant professor of art, exhibited his work in the Annual Miniature Exhibition at River Oaks Square in Alexandria, La. from Nov. 29 through Jan. 14.</p>

<p><strong>Timothy Milinovich</strong>, assistant professor of religious studies, attended the Society of Biblical Literature/American Academy of Religion Conference in San Francisco from Nov. 19-22. At the conference, he was invited to become a senior fellow at the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. The group of senior fellows consists of 45 Catholic biblical scholars in the U.S. who emphasize theological and liturgical perspectives in interpreting scripture. Milinovich is the youngest senior fellow among their ranks.</p>
<p>In Nov. 2011, <strong>Dr. Harold Rodinsky</strong>, assistant professor of psychology, was invited to be a speaker at the Distinguished Lecture Series at John Jay Exemplary High School’s Academy of Science. He presented his current research project, “Theory of Levels of Processing: The Effect of Elaborative Rehearsal on the Production of Semantic Memories.”</p>

The book is part of the publisher’s series on states and countries and each runs about 190 pages with photos. The San Antonio Express-News reviewed the book, stating, “Perry skillfully compresses latter events and timelines into a narrative that rollicks along the tracks he lays down throughout the book, filled with interesting anecdotes and insights into the economic and political conflicts that animated each of the historical periods he chronicles.”</p>

<p>Chemistry professors <strong>Dr. Julian Davis, Dr. Kate Edelman,</strong> and <strong>Dr. Brian McBurnett</strong>, conducted the department of chemistry’s annual Welch Summer Research Program with the support of collaborators <strong>Dr. Adeola Grillo</strong> and <strong>Dr. Donald Sikazwe</strong>, assistant professors in the Feik School of Pharmacy.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Paul Messina</strong>, associate professor of mathematics, has been invited by colleagues in Pretoria, South Africa, to collaborate on research in statistics education. Initial work will focus on joint development of a service course.</p>
<p>On Oct. 1, <strong>Dr. Alison Whittemore</strong>, assistant professor in engineering and physics, and <strong>Daniel Potter</strong>, director of the UIW Solar House, earned UIW’s Solar “House of CARDS” acceptance as part of Solar San Antonio’s 2011 Tour. Only a limited number of sites are included each year. The house is currently prepared to apply for, “platinum,” the highest possible Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Alakananda Chaudhuri</strong>, associate professor of chemistry, and <strong>Dr. Bonnie McCormick</strong>, associate professor of biology, received continuation funding in the amount of $27,000 for their Teacher Quality grant work, enhancing science experience and instruction for in-service San Antonio teachers.</p>

<p>In addition to attending three genetics conferences during the summer, <strong>Dr. Christy MacKinnon</strong>, professor of biology, was also invited to participate at the National Study of Education in Undergraduate Science: Research Based Undergraduate Teaching, held at the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa in June 2011.</p>
<p>During the summer, <strong>Dr. Ana Vallor</strong>, assistant professor of biology, and <strong>Dr. Helen Smith</strong>, assistant professor in the Feik School of Pharmacy, visited the Texas Biomedical Research Institute Department of Genetics to discuss educational outreach and research collaboration.</p>
<p>At the August meeting of the Society of Social Problems in Las Vegas,<strong> Dr. Lydia Andrade</strong>, political science professor presented “Cracking the Glass Ceiling in Higher Education.”</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Gilberto Hinojosa</strong>, professor of history, has been working on The Chicanos and the Catholic Church Oral History Project. The project was recently awarded a grant of $5,700 from the Conference for Religious for Hispanic Ministry.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Patricia Lonchar</strong>, assistant dean in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, and <strong>Dr. Timothy Milinovich</strong>, assistant professor of religious studies, were on a panel discussion celebrating the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible at the University Presbyterian Church Source of Light (SoL) Center in San Antonio.</p>

<p><strong>Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, CCVI</strong>, professor of religious studies, presented, “Deconstructing Stereotypes of Iraqis, Listening to Voices of Families” at the Dialog of Civilizations Platform 2011, “Us and Them: Constructing the ‘Other’ and Pathways for Dialog,” at the Istanbul Conference Center in Houston. Kirk’s exhibit, “Iraqi Women of Three Generation: Challenges, Education, and Hopes for Peace,” was also shown at the Turquoise Center in Houston September 18-24.</p>
<p><strong>William Gokelman</strong>, professor of music and <strong>Lena Gokelman</strong>, director of music ministry, co-presented “Music as an Instrument of Unity in the Sacred Liturgy,” a workshop on October 29 using the Mass of Renewal composed by Bill and David Kauffman. Archdiocesan officials have approved this mass in San Antonio, and several parishes are introducing it to their congregations.</p>
<p><strong>Margaret Mitchell</strong>, professor of theatre arts, attended the Prague Quadrennial, International Theatre Design Competition and Conference, June 14-25, in Prague Czech Republic. The Prague Quadrennial is the major international competition for stage design and theatre architecture. She had a book signing for “Making the Scene” and was invited to give a talk on June 19. She is also conducting research at the baroque Castle Theatre at Cesky Krumlov where she is studying the extant wardrobe from the 1740’s.</p>

<p><strong>Kathy Vargas</strong>, associate professor of art, was part of a delegation of Texas artists who, along with a Chicago curator, were sent to speak about and exhibit their work at Buenos Aires’ OSDE Foundation Gallery in June. The exhibit was organized by the Smithsonian’s Latino Center and supported by an invitation from the State Department and the U.S. Ambassador to Argentina.</p>

Barnes also presented, “The Finck Cigar Strikes in San Antonio and the Communal Conscience of Mexican Women in Defense of their Labor rights,” a paper he coauthored with Basil Aivaliotis, at the Sixth Annual International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences in July at the University of New Orleans.</p>

<p>In September, <strong>Dr. James Creagan</strong>, director of the Center for International Studies, attended meetings in Indiana with the University of Notre Dame Advisory Council for Latin America. Creagan discussed ideas on student learning in Latin America and Cuba. UIW will exchange experiences on the university’s study in Cuba and other areas as well.</p>

<p>“Building an Intentional Culture of Social Justice: Increasing Understanding and Competence in the Curriculum,” an article by <strong>Dr. Robert Connelly</strong>, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and <strong>Dr. Denise Doyle</strong>, UIW Provost, has been published in the Journal of Catholic Higher Education.</p>

The citation stated, “If universities are where the Church does its thinking, the theologians who teach and write the articles for this journal of the College Theology Society, provide evidence of some of the more significant, difficult and profound thinking about serious matters that face the Church and globe today.”</p>

Russ received her award at the council’s annual DiversityFIRST™ Awards Luncheon, held Oct., 19 at The Club at Sonterra. The theme for this year’s luncheon was “Embracing Inclusion: Education in a World of Differences. “The Texas Diversity Council established the DiversityFIRST™ Awards Initiative in 2004, to recognize and commend organizations and individuals for their support of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Lydia Andrade</strong>, professor of government and international affairs, attended the Southwestern Social Science Association annual meeting in Las Vegas in March and presented a paper titled “Graduating from the Electoral College.” She also chaired a panel titled “Teaching About American Politics” and was a participant on a roundtable titled “Strategies for Successful Teaching in Political Science Core Curriculum Classes.” Andrade was also selected as the recipient of the 2011 UIW Presidential Teaching Award.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Dr. Dianna Tison</strong>, of the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, gave a presentation titled “Promoting Pedagogical Approaches to Robust Learning in Undergraduate STEM Workshop” and facilitated the workshop at Mountain View College from April 7-9 in Dallas, Texas. <strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Dr. Jennifer Cook, Dr. Sara Kolb, Dr. Holly Cassells</strong> and <strong>Yvonne Davila</strong>, faculty members of the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, co-presented posters “Blood Pressure Knowledge and Self Management Behaviors of Older Hispanic Adults Diagnosed with Hypertension: A Pilot Study” and “Ministerios de Salud:  A University-Community Partnership for Health” at the Building Partnerships for Geriatric Care, a regional conference held in San Antonio from April 7-8. <p>“Making the Scene,” the book co-authored by <strong>Margaret Mitchell</strong>, professor of theatre arts, won the 2011 Prose Book Award for Music and the Performing Arts. The award is one of the American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Chris Paris</strong>, associate professor of English, read and participated in the “Forrest Fest Preview” of selected poets in Austin that precedes the Forrest Fest Celebration of Poetry and the Arts that will be held throughout Austin. He read “We Are Briareus,” “Metaphor” and “Pentangeli.” His poem, “We Come and Go But Ghostly Still” appears in the winter edition of Hudson Review, The International Collection.<strong> </strong></p>

<p><strong>Dr. Amalia Mondriguez</strong>, professor of modern language, attended the Southwest Council of Latin American Studies Conference in March in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She also presented on the production of 15 radio programs for Huancane, Peru, a poor region of 100 villages in the country’s mountains.   <strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Debbie Bussineau-King</strong>, professor of music, presided over the National Association of Teachers of Singing South Texas Chapter spring meeting and student auditions in April at UTSA. She stepped down after completing three years as president of the chapter. <strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Sr. Martha Ann Kirk</strong>, professor of religious studies, gave the Christian keynote presentation on the “Role of Women in Abrahamic Traditions” for an Institute of Interfaith Dialog Dinner at the new Raindrop Turkish Center in Corpus Christi in April. Kirk also received the Faculty of the Year Award for the 2010-11 academic year. <strong></strong></p>

<p>“It was a big surprise and very humbling,” Gokelman said. “I’m so grateful for the recognition. But there are so many people here who do what’s expected of a Moody Professor.”</p>
<p>The Moody Professor delivers two public lectures annually and leads the graduation procession for UIW. Though it’s too early to say exactly what he’ll speak on for his lectures, Gokelman plans to use the opportunities to “illuminate a different side of music and show what’s behind the music and music making.”</p>
<p>“Some people have asked me, ‘Why not just get up and sing?’” he said, with a laugh. “I told them maybe, but probably not. But there may be some music involved in it.”</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Mary Ruth Moore</strong>, professor in the Dreeben School of Education, recently co-presented “Remember the Alamo: The Story of the Alamo Chapter of the U.S. Play Coalition” at the Value of Play Conference at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. Leslie Sprague, the education director of the San Antonio Children’s Museum, and Lacy Morrison, of the San Antonio Zoo’s Tiny Tot Nature Spot, presented with her.<strong></strong></p>
<p>The presentation explained the formation of the new Alamo Chapter of the U.S. Play Coalition on April 22, 2010, following the play symposium “Saving Children: A Call for a Contemporary Child Saving Movement for the 21st Century.” Founding partners in the Alamo Chapter include the University of the Incarnate Word, the San Antonio Children’s Museum and the San Antonio Zoo.</p>
<p>The Alamo Chapter is the first such chapter to join under the umbrella of the U.S. Play Coalition.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Judith Beauford</strong>, of the Dreeben School of Education, presented “Number Names Research in Mexico and Bolivia” at the School Science and Mathematics Association Conference in Florida in November.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Mary Ruth Moore </strong>and <strong>Dr. David Campos</strong>, both of the Dreeben School of Education, along with four former students, recently wrote an article titled “Inspiration to Teach—Reflections on Friedrich Froebel and Why He Counts in Early Childhood Education.” The article was published in the November 2010 journal of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The article highlights a group of 14 students’ 2006 trip to Eastern Germany to trace the footsteps of Froebel, known internationally as the Father of Kindergarten. <p><strong>Dr. Glenn Ambrose</strong>, associate professor of religious studies, published an article titled “Religious Diversity, Sacramental Encounters, and the Spirit of God” published in the Fall 2010 issue of “Horizons.”</p>
<p><strong>Dell Davis</strong>, head of public services at the Mabee Library, had an article she co-authored titled “Transformation of Access Services in the New Era” published in the April-June 2010 issue of the “Journal of Access Services.” She also co-presented “Access Services: Innovative Management” at the November 2010 Access Services Conference in Atlanta.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Stephanie Grote-Garcia</strong>, assistant professor in the Dreeben School of Education, recently published an article titled “Scaffolding the Comprehension of Beginning Readers: Incorporating the Patterned Books of ‘Then and Now’” in “English in Texas.” She also completed three children’s books in her educational series Read, Reason, Write. Each book was accompanied by a teacher’s edition. In November, she presented at the 54th annual meeting of the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers in Omaha, Neb.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Denise Staudt</strong>, dean of the Dreeben School of Education, faculty members <strong>Dr. Michael Risku</strong>, <strong>Dr. Elda Martinez</strong> (DSE) and Celina Aceves Hinojosa, coordinator of English at Instituto Miguel Angel de Occidente in Guadalajara, Mexico, presented at the 9<sup>th</sup> annual International Conference on Education in Honolulu in January.  Their presentation, “Mexico Teacher Research Project:  Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension,” focused on the schools’ partnership.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Sara Kolb, Maria Gillespie </strong>and <strong>Dr. Gary Norgan</strong>, faculty members of the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, along with Perla Zarate-Abbott and former nursing faculty member Jean Deliganis, all of whom work at the Ministerio de Salud, or Health Ministry, published “Perceptions about Blood Pressure among Mexican American Adults Diagnosed with Hypertension” in “Family and Community Health: The Journal of Health Promotion and Maintenance.” Gillespie, Deliganis and Kolb, along with faculty members <strong>Dr. Jennifer Cook, Dr. Holly Cassells </strong>and <strong>Yvonne Davila </strong>presented “Using Visual Learning to Educate Mexican American Adults about Their Blood Pressure” at the San Antonio Health Literacy Initiative 6th annual conference in October.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Jeanette McNeill, Dr. Ramona Parker</strong>, and <strong>Joyce Howard</strong>, from the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, Dr. Lu Pelayo, director at the Alamo Colleges, and Jackie Stovall, with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, presented an invited symposium titled “Simulation in Nursing Education: Evidence Base, How-To’s and Dollars and Cents” for the Southern Nursing Research Society meeting in February in Jacksonville, Fla.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Gary Keith</strong>, assistant professor of political science, organized the annual conference of the Southwest Association of Prelaw Advisors in New Orleans in October, and he participated on a panel titled “Teaching Undergraduate Law through Movies and Novels.”</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Sally Said</strong>, professor of modern languages, presented “Transgender in Transition: The Evolving Literacy of Gender Identity and Expression” at the Western States Rhetoric and Literacy Conference, “Transforming Rhetoric: Discovery and Change,” at New Mexico State University in October.</p>
<p><strong>Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, Th.D., </strong>professor of religious studies, presented “Hope and Healing: Stories from Kurdish Iraq Where Persons Inspired by Fethullah Gülen Have Been Serving” at the International Conference on the Gulen Movement at the University of Chicago in November. She also presented “Christian – Muslim Encounters through Using Online International Exchanges in Undergraduate Religious Studies Classes” at the American Academy of Religion meeting in Atlanta in October. Kirk received the Insigne Verbum Award during December Commencement “for interfaith and intercultural dialogue in pursuit of peace.”</p>
<p><strong>Dr. María Félix-Ortiz</strong>, associate professor of psychology, was invited in January to join the new Bexar County Mental Health Consortium, an advisory committee working with Judge Nelson Wolff and other members of the Commissioners Court, to form a better coordinated system of mental health care for the indigent of Bexar County. She has been a regular volunteer instructor for the San Antonio Police Department Crisis Intervention Team Training Program presenting “Penetrating the Fog of Fear: Understanding and Communicating with Persons living with Chemical Dependence and Mental Illness” as police officers’ substance abuse training. She was recently recognized by the San Antonio Police Officers Association for her five years of service to the department. She was also invited as the keynote speaker for St. George Episcopalian Church’s Mental Health Awareness Day and presented “An Overview of Mental Illness and Substance Abuse for the Faith Community” in October.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Lydia Andrade</strong>, professor of political science, presented “The Scandals of the Bush Years” at the International Conference on Arts and Humanities in Honolulu in January. She was also recognized in December by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Educational Policy Improvement Center for significant contributions to the Texas College and Career Readiness Initiative. She worked on college readiness standards for the social sciences.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Valerie Kesner Greenberg</strong>, associate professor of communication arts, co-authored an academic paper with Terry Bertling, assistant managing editor of the San Antonio Express-News, concerning convergent media’s role in changing print journalism. They authored a primary research case study titled “Convergent Media and the Future of the American Newspaper.” The project was accepted in November 2010 to the International Conference on Education, Research and Innovation (ICERI) held in Madrid, Spain. The paper was included in the proceedings and online.</p>

<p><strong>James Borders</strong>, assistant professor of art, had his work featured in the solo exhibition “Essence of Color” in Louisiana in October.</p>
<p><strong>Ferd Vollmar</strong>, director of the Cardinal Marching Band, was invited to conduct the All Region Band in Houston and in San Antonio in January. His article called “It’s All about the Details” was published in the September issue of “Bandmasters Review.” The article shares effective teaching strategies designed to improve preparing ensemble music and performance enhancing concepts for high school marching band programs.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Christopher Paris</strong>, associate professor of English, published a poem titled “Tigers Extinct in Twelve Years” in the annual poetry and literature review “Literary House Review” in December. His poem “She Is Spirit” was published in the autumn 2010 issue of “A Hudson View Poetry Digest.” His poem “Vertigo Bridge” was published in the November edition of the online journal “Hudson View Online.”</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Janice Dvorkin</strong>, associate professor of music therapy, led a workshop on “Process or Product: The Difference in Practice and Teaching in the Creative Arts Therapies” at the Creative Arts Therapy Summit in New York City in November.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Bernadette O’Connor</strong>, associate professor of philosophy, presented “Three Theories of Sublimation—Freudian, Maritainian and Ricoeurian—and their Metaphysical Foundations” at the annual International Conference of the American Maritain Association in Ohio in October.</p>

<p><strong>Debbie Bussineau-King</strong>, professor of music, and Professor Emerita <strong>Ruth Friedberg </strong>gave a recital titled “Songs of the Sefarad” at the Shabbat Service of Temple Chai at the Jewish Community of San Antonio in November. Bussineau-King also presented “Teaching Voice at the Dollar Store” at the Regional TEXOMA Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing in Abilene in November. She is president of the chapter. In October, she gave a joint recital of music from the British Isles at St. John’s Lutheran Church’s First Friday Concert Series.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Michael Tallon</strong>, associate professor and chair of modern languages, presented “The Effects of Foreign Language Anxiety on Spanish Heritage Students” at the conference of the Texas Foreign Language Association in San Antonio in October and also at the conference of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Boston in November. He also recently co-authored “Foreign Language Anxiety,” a chapter in “Anxiety in Schools: The Causes, Consequences, and Solutions for Academic Anxieties.” In addition, his article “The Effects of Computer-Mediated Communication on Foreign Language Anxiety in Heritage and Non-Heritage Students of Spanish: A Preliminary Investigation” was published in “Texas Papers in Foreign Language Education.”</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Renea Fike</strong>, of the Dreeben School of Education (DSE), wrote a $2.4 million grant for Amarillo College that is funded through the Department of Education and targets drop-out, migrant students. She also co-authored “Predictors of success on the pedagogy and professional responsibilities (ppr) Texas teacher certification examination,” with <strong>Dr. Elda Martinez</strong>, of the DSE, and <strong>Dr. David Fike</strong>, senior research statistician.</p>
<p>At the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education (CSOTTE) in Houston in October, <strong>Dr. Renea Fike</strong> and <strong>Dr. Mary Ruth Moore</strong>, both of the Dreeben School of Education (DSE), presented “Promoting Curriculum Connections Through Student Engagement and Professional Development.” <strong>Dr. Elda Martinez</strong>, of the DSE, and Fike presented “Critical Issues for Teacher Preparation:  Bullying,” at the same conference.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/9b.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2579" title="9b" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/9b-e1289494480375.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="143" /></a>Brad Robinson</strong>, program director for athletics training education, was selected as a member of the review committee of the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.  The CAATE is responsible for affirmation of entry-level athletics training education programs throughout the United States.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Gary Keith</strong>, assistant professor of political science, gave a presentation on “Environmental Politics in Texas,” at the round table series of The Village Men’s Group in September at the Village at Incarnate Word.</p>
<p>In Tehran, Iran, <strong>Sr. Martha Ann Kirk</strong>, professor of religious studies, attended the International Conference on Multiculturalism and Global Community sponsored by the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies, Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and the IRIB University in July.  She presented “Promoting the Common Good through Intercultural Understanding and Interfaith Dialogue: A Study of Using Online International Exchanges with University Students in the U.S., Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.” Then she conducted grant-funded research on peace-building in Iraq done by Muslims inspired by Fethullah Gülen.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Matthias Schubnell</strong>, professor of English, was invited to review grant proposals for the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C., in September.</p>
<p>The National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) announced in July that “Messa Rinnovare: Mass of Renewal” by Bill Gokelman, professor of music, and David Kauffman won first place in a new Mass setting competition sponsored by NPM. More than 150 entries were submitted. Five judges chose four finalists, and the compositions were sung by and voted on by more than 2,000 NPM members who attended the national convention in Detroit, Mich. The San Antonio Ballet Company also choreographed and danced to Gokelman’s composition “Going Home” in a performance during the summer. “Going Home” is an original work for piano and violin and is recorded on Gokelman’s “Steal Away” CD. In addition, the new musical “Moses and the Burning Within”, written by Gokelman and Kauffman, was selected as the work to be performed in this year’s Youth Sing Praise (YSP) conference in Belleville, Ill.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/9c.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2580" title="9c" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/9c-e1289494577649-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>Dr. Chris Edelman</strong>, assistant professor of philosophy, presented his paper on “Montaigne on Moral Judgment” at the Atlantic Canada Seminar in Early Modern Philosophy at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in July.</p>
<p>In September, UIW hosted a meeting of the San Antonio chapter of National Pastoral Musicians. <strong>Tim Milinovich</strong>, assistant professor of religious studies, conducted sessions on St. Matthew’s Gospel. <strong>Bill Gokelman</strong>, professor of music, co-presented a “Workshop for Cantors and Those Who Accompany Them.”</p>
<p>At the International Conference on Ethical Issues in Medical Tourism at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, in June, <strong>Dr. Roger Barnes</strong>, professor of sociology, and <strong>Dr. David Vequist</strong>, associate professor of management, gave a presentation on “Death Tourism—A Summary of the Academic Literature and Suggestions for Future Research.” <strong>Dr. Paul Lewis</strong>, associate professor of philosophy, presented on “Medical Tourism: Deliberate, Accidental or Coerced?”</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Ken Metz</strong>, professor of music, gave a presentation titled “Open your computers to page 32…: Fundamentals for the Aspiring Musician, a New Hard Copy/Interactive Textbook,” at the College Music Society National Conference in Minneapolis in September. Also in September, his piece “Three Movements for Woodwind Quintet” was premiered by the Olmos Ensemble at the first Universalist Unitarian Church and at the UTSA Recital Hall.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/10c.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2581" title="10c" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/10c-e1289494649807-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>Ferd Vollmar</strong>, director of the UIW Cardinal Marching Band, was invited to participate in the 2010 University of Texas Longhorn Music Camp in June. More than 360 high school band students from across the state auditioned and participated in the week-long event.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Chris Paris</strong>, associate professor of English, was nominated for the Pushcart Prize, a national annual poetry award, by the editors of Skyline Press who accepted for publication his and Dennis Slattery’s book of verse, “The Beauty Between Words.” His poem titled “Home Is Where the Hearth Is” appears in the summer edition of “A Hudson View Poetry Digest.”</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Lopita Nath</strong>, assistant professor of history, visited six Bhutanese Refugee camps in Southeastern Nepal and interviewed refugees, human rights activists, politicians and UNHCR officials. This was a field trip supported by her Faculty Endowment Research Grant on the Resettlement of the Bhutanese Refugees in San Antonio.  She also had a book review published in “Millenial Asia: An International Journal of Asian Studies.” She reviewed Mukhtar Mai and Marie Theresa Cuny’s “In the Name Of Honor.”</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/10d.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2582" title="10d" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/10d-e1289494695927.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="148" /></a>Dr. Rafael Adrian</strong>, assistant professor of chemistry, published an article titled “Tetrakis(4-cyanopyridine)palladium(II)bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate)” in the journal Acta Crystallographica.</p>
<p><strong>Kathy Vargas</strong>, associate professor of art, participated in “3 Views: Minding the Muse,” a panel discussion held at the McNay Art Museum in conjunction with the exhibit “Minding the Muse,” in which her work was exhibited.  She also served as curator for the “Poetic” photography exhibit for Al Rendon Photography &amp; Fine Art.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/10b.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2583" title="10b" src="http://www.uiw.edu/thewordonline/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/10b-e1289494766664.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="143" /></a>Dr. María Félix-Ortiz</strong>, associate professor of psychology, was selected as American Psychological Association’s Division 50 Liaison for the Committee for Women in Psychology.  This summer, she made a podium presentation with student Megan Brodie at the International Crisis Intervention Training Conference in San Antonio titled “Persuading Policy Makers: Effective CIT Program Evaluation and Public Relations.”  She also presented “Appropriate Design and Measures in Hispanic/Latino(a) Drug Abuse Research: Defining and Measuring Cultural Phenomena” at the Interdisciplinary Research Training Institute at the University of Houston.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Emily Clark</strong>, associate professor of English, had an article titled “Tom and Gatsby as Inverted Doppelgangers: The Crises of Modernity in ‘The Great Gatsby´.’’ published in the journal “Postscript.”</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Pat Gower</strong>, professor of history, received a positive review in “H-Net Reviews” in September for her chapter on municipal reform in Dallas and San Antonio in the book “Seeking Inalienable Rights: Texans and their Quests for Justice.”</p>
