<p><strong>Teddy L. Jones ’66 BSN</strong> has published a new book, “Halfwide: A Novel.” It’s available in both paperback and eReader formats from Amazon or your favorite independent bookstore. She received her MFA from Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. in May, 2012.</p>
<p><strong>Linda Raya ’68 BA</strong> was named a People’s Choice winner in the teacher category of the Preston Hollow neighborhood newspaper in Dallas.</p>
<p><strong>1970s</strong></p>
<p><strong>Ann Goetz ’71 BSN</strong> retired after 41 years at Methodist Hospital, the last eight at Methodist Specialty and Transplant as vice president of nursing. She now plans to travel abroad, fix up the house and volunteer.</p>

She has also just completed a memoir called “A Desperate Faith.” Five of the seven volumes she has written are Christian poetry and have been featured in “A Time of Singing,” “Focus on the Family” and “Clubhouse Jr.” magazines. Currently she writes for Urban-Faith.com and Primetime newspapers. (Pictured on Left)</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong>Edna Mae-Barrera ’78 BBA</strong> was named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. She was also chosen to represent her school as Teacher of the Year. She had been at the school for 14 years and has now retired from the Fort Worth Independent School District.</p>

<p align="LEFT"><strong>Mary Pohlmann ’84 BA</strong> is an artist living in Miami, Fla. Her drawing “Swimming to the Beat of a Different Drummer” recently won Best of Show at a juried exhibit at the Glass Gallery in Pembroke Pines, Fla. She will be exhibiting her slightly fractured fairytale drawings in July 2013 also at the Glass Gallery.</p>

<p align="LEFT"><strong>Mary Lou Hymel ’97 BA</strong> has begun working her fifth tax season with H&amp;R Block. Over the last year, she put in several hundred hours of study to pass three Special Enrollment Exams. As a result of passing these three tests, Hymel is now an Enrolled Agent with an H&amp;R Block  certification level of Master Tax Advisor.</p>
<p align="LEFT"><strong>Jon-Paul McGowan ’99 BA </strong>has a play that will premiere on March 28, at the Pocket Sandwich Theatre in Dallas. “Robin Hood: Road to Sherwood” is a part of the theatre’s 2013 season. This is an original three act play retelling the Robin Hood story as a Bob Hope &amp; Bing Crosby style road show. The play will run through May 11.</p>

<p align="LEFT"><strong>Howard H. Lutz ’02 MBA</strong> joined Broadway Bank as group executive vice president of private banking. For the past several years, Howard has served as a senior vice president of private banking for a regional bank where he founded the San Antonio private banking division, including team recruitment and product and business development. Prior to that, he spent over 10 years in various leadership and advisory roles—in both a domestic and international capacity—for global financial organizations.</p>

<p align="LEFT"><strong>Kristin Garcia ’09 MAA</strong> started a new position with Western Governors University (WGU) as a trainer for the mentoring department in Texas and is currently working with a startup based out of San Francisco on a free mobile app (“Call Dibs”) for the U.S. Military that is now available through iTunes. It launched June 1 and has over 1,500 downloads. Additionally, she works as a part of the business faculty for WGU and teaches students all over the globe.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Carolina G. Huerta ’71 BSN</strong> was in- ducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing on Oct. 13, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Academy fellows are nursing’s most accomplished nursing leaders in education, management, practice, and research.</p>
<p><strong>Velma Manuelito Shirley ’71 BS</strong> worked for the Indian Health Service and retired after 41 years. She is currently enjoying her retirement with her eight-year-old grand- daughter and loves to travel whenever possible. She volunteers at St. Michael School where her granddaughter attends school.</p>
<p><strong>Bonnie Rowe Clinbeard ’71 BA</strong> and husband Dale celebrated their 40<sup>th</sup> wedding anniversary in June. She enjoys latchhook needlework, listening to music, and being around family.</p>
<p><strong>Sr. Josetta Eveler, CCVI ’72 MA</strong> is teaching at Immaculate Conception School in Jefferson City, Mo., for the 24th year. This is her 59th year in education.</p>
<p>D<strong>r. Michael Masser ’73 MA </strong>has been named the department head of the wildlife and fisheries sciences department at Texas A&amp;M University at College Station.</p>

<p><strong>Leslie D. Noels ’81 MA</strong> retired from teaching after 31 years May 2011. Her daughter, Courtknee Noels was a Magna Cum Laude graduate from UIW May 2011, receiving her BA in communications.</p>

<p><strong>Rev. Mark Cannaday ’86 BA</strong> was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in Keller, Texas at Elizabeth Ann Seton parish on June 30, 2012. Bishop Vann was the celebrant, with Msgr. Jeffrey Steenson, the Ordinary of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter attending.<br />

She has now been assigned to the head position as Director of Bands at Highlands High School where she will be in charge of all bands (beginner, concert, symphonic, wind ensemble, and jazz) and all classes pertaining to music education at the high school level (midi lab, theory, woodwind and brass class). She is also the Youth Choir Director (Jammin’ for Jesus) at Holy Name Catholic Church and Life Teen Music Director at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. She is married to <strong>Ralph Jarzombek ’94 BM</strong>, a UIW music alumnus.</p>

<p><strong>Toni Chapa ’90 MA</strong> received her Ph.D. in curriculum &amp; instruction, literacy studies, from Texas A&amp;M-Corpus Christi, in May. She is employed with the Corpus Christi Independent School District.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Trip Puhl ’92 BS</strong> was recently inducted into the UIW Athletics Hall of Fame. Puhl is one of very few three-sport athletes in UIW history, competing in basketball, baseball and golf. He continues to hold three basketball records including career rebounds and free throws while placing third on the all-time scoring list with 1,595 points.</p>
<p><strong>Kevin Smisek ’93 BBA</strong> is in his 2nd year as the head boys basketball coach and director of students at St. Anthony Catholic High School. This is his 18th year in education.</p>

<p><strong>Jimbo Parks ’96 BBA</strong> was recently inducted into the UIW Athletics Hall of Fame. He helped lead the soccer team to a 62-20-6 record during his four years on the pitch. He was recognized as a NAIA All-American three times and was the university’s first player to be named all-region. Parks was a finalist for the Collegiate Player of the Year in 1993.</p>
<p><strong>Cynthia Osbourne ’96 BA</strong> is the lead singer for the hard rock/alternative band, When Words Attack. WWA has opened for several national and international acts including Kittie, Fates Warning, &amp; In This Moment. Osbourne has also appeared in several independent films, commercials and music videos.</p>

<p><strong>Mayra Carbajal ’06 BA</strong> is currently working as a family specialist with Pathways Youth &amp; Family Services which helps children and families thrive by offering an array of social services including foster care, adoption, and counseling.</p>
<p><strong>Joan Braune ’06 BA</strong> successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in philosophy (“Erich Fromm’s Prophetic Messianism: Towards a Critical Theory of Hope”), earning her Ph.D. in philosophy from the Univer- sity of Kentucky. She has been active at the campus Catholic Newman Center and was recently appointed to the Catholic Diocese of Lexington’s bishop’s advisory team on Peace and Justice Leadership.</p>
<p><strong>Bryan Ortiz ’08 BA</strong> recently directed “Monsters Are Real,” the second piece in an anthology movie titled “Sanitarium” that was filmed in San Antonio and will be released on DVD in the spring.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The University of the Incarnate Word has three new programs available to those individuals seeking to take their skills to the next level: a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Student Services in Higher Education; a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Online Teaching and Training; and a Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) pending SAC- SCOC approval.</p>
<p>The M.Ed. in Student Services in Higher Education prepares students for employment or advancement at the college or university level. This concentration will develop students that possess the knowledge, skills and leadership qualities necessary to facilitate the learning and development of students through campus support services. This program also offers a non-degree seeking plan for students who wish to obtain an 18-hour certificate in Student Services in Higher Education.</p>
<p>The M.Ed. in Online Teaching and Training is designed to address the demand for more professionals in the area of online teaching and training serving institutional needs in corporate and educational settings. The program emphasizes learning and leadership, preparing students to lead initiatives in technology in their own organizations.</p>
<p>The Doctorate of Business Administration program is intended to create scholar-practitioners who are able to make original contributions to the advancement of business research and practice. Graduates of the program will develop innovative principles and practices in business operations and management. They will employ ethical leadership to solve domestic and global social issues and communicate appropriately in diverse environments by aligning audience, medium and message. Individuals with master’s degrees in business or business-related fields are eligible for admission to the DBA program. The program prepares students for careers in higher education and business.</p>
<p>All three programs are accepting applications for the fall 2013 semester.</p>

<p><strong>Lillian Dickinson ’62 BA</strong> has been retired for five years and is now serving as the President of the Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center.  She will celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary in June.</p>
<p><strong>Mary Cay Murray ’68 BS</strong> serves as regional vice president for the Ladies of Charity of the USA, Southern Region.  She recently attended the International Assembly in Madrid Spain, with representation from 22 nations across the globe.  LOC is the oldest Catholic women’s organization in the world, whose mission is to serve the poor with charity, humility and simplicity.</p>
<p><strong>Janice M. Marak ’68 BA</strong> retired from Austin Independent School District and now volunteers for Austin Hospice.</p>
<p><strong>Linda Milam ’69 BA</strong> has worked as the director of religious education at Sacred Heart Church in Uvalde for 28 years.  This October she will have served in catechetics for 50 years.</p>
<p><strong>1970s</strong></p>
<p><strong>Carol Darling ’71 BA</strong> recently completed five years of teaching drawing fundamentals and beginning painting at the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center in Kerrville.  She plans to continue painting wildlife for gallery representation. Her website is www.cdarlinganimalart.com  Darling is a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists, Int.  She has also worked as a professional photographer, graphic designer and arts educator.</p>

<p><strong>Cynthia Mozisek Callins ’75 BA</strong> published a novel in March by Tate Publishing Company entitled “Under the Windmills.”  It is a modern western fiction, with suspense and romance.  More information can be found at www.CindyMCallins.com.</p>
<p><strong>Justice Phylis J. Speedlin ’75 BSN</strong> was recently honored for her work in co-founding the San Antonio Bar Association Community Justice Program which provides free legal services to needy residents and veterans in Bexar County.  Speedlin has been selected by the State Bar of Texas to be the first recipient of the 2012 Judge Merrill Hartman Pro Bono Judge Award recognizing a judge who has provided exemplary pro bono service, including outreach to attorneys to increase the quantity and quality of pro bono representation.</p>
<p><strong>Mirella Garza Kennedy ’76 BA</strong> currently serves as the principal of St. Thomas More Catholic School and continues to be an adjunct professor for the UIW ADCaP program.</p>

<p><strong>Deborah Benavides ’83 BA</strong> serves as the senior academic advisor for the College of Architecture at UTSA. In October, she will present “Hitting the High Notes for Success: A Working Guide to Help Students with Asperger’s Syndrome” at the National Academic Advising Conference in Nashville, Tenn.</p>
<p><strong>Nancy M. Cano-Reyes ’87 BSN</strong> works at Methodist Hospital as a nurse director. She cheerfully welcomes UIW nursing students every semester.</p>
<p><strong>Sharon Struckhoff Kotzur ’87 BA</strong> is completing her 25th year as a secondary art teacher at Pleasanton ISD.  She lives in Floresville, Texas with her 15-year-old son, Jared and her husband Dennis.</p>

<p><strong>Elise Lopez ’98 BA</strong> played the mother of Henry Higgins in San Pedro Theater’s production of “My Fair Lady” and has been chosen to play the starring role in the summer production of “Hello, Dolly.”</p>
<p><strong>Larry G. Appel ’91 BBA</strong> recently celebrated his one year wedding anniversary with wife Lucy.  He also began a sales job as senior fire alarm sales representative at MCS Fire &amp; Security.</p>
<p><strong>Joni Luna ’93 BS</strong> serves as a women’s athletic coordinator at San Diego High School located in San Diego, Texas.  She has also started South Texas Elite Sports Academy offering camps and clinics.</p>
<p><strong>Muriel Rhoder ’97 MBA</strong> serves as the auditing manager for the San Antonio Housing Authority.</p>

<p><strong>Retired Capt. Gordon Livingston ’95 MBA</strong> retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve in June 2011 after 30 years of combined active and reserve service.</p>

<p><strong>Asia Ciaravino ’98 BA</strong> co-founder and executive director of Classic Theatre was named as the president and CEO of San Pedro Playhouse. San Pedro Playhouse begins its 100th anniversary season this fall.</p>
<p><strong>Heather Bonnette Perez ’97 BSN</strong> will start her family nurse practitioner master’s degree at Prairie View A&amp;M University in the fall of 2012.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Noel Archambeault ’96 BM</strong> was the featured soprano singer at Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts on the University of Delaware (UD) campus in Newark.  She teaches applied voice, vocal pedagogy and lyric diction at UD.</p>
<p><strong>Amalia Ortiz ’96 BA</strong> was accepted to the creative writing graduate program at The University of Texas-Pan American. She will begin pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing this fall.  She was recently chosen as one of 10 winners of VIA’s 2012 Poetry on the Move contest and was also invited to perform at the Havana International Poetry Festival in Cuba.</p>

<p><strong>Byrdie Franco-Rocha ’01 BBA</strong> recently relocated to San Antonio from Dallas and is serving as the marketing director for LATISM’s 2012 national conference to be held in Houston this October. LATISM or Latinos in Social Media, is the largest, most influential Latino organization engaged in the new multicultural web.  Franco-Rocha also serves as the director of community outreach for Sanford Brown College San Antonio/Austin markets.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Jacob K. Tingle ’02 MAA</strong> was promoted to assistant professor of the practice, business administration.  Additionally, he serves as the director of the sport management program at Trinity University.</p>
<p><strong>Kuei-Yuan Wang ’03 Ph.D.</strong> won Taiwan’s National Foreign Affairs Commendation issued by the Foreign Ministry.</p>
<p><strong>Barbara Michelle de Guzman ’05 MSN RN</strong> had her research accepted for presentation at the 23rd International Nursing Research Congress in Brisbane Australia.</p>
<p><strong>Salvador Salazar ’05 BAAS</strong> received his master’s degree in political science from American Military University in February.</p>
<p><strong>Meghan Oswald ’06 BA</strong> is currently serving as vice president of development and communications for Haven for Hope.</p>
<p><strong>Ray Lopez ’07 BBA</strong> has joined Omnitrans as the new director of safety and regulatory compliance and will oversee their security, safety and loss prevention operations.</p>

<p><strong>Wanita Mercer ’06 BA ’12 MAA</strong> started work in the San Antonio Independent School District as a GEAR UP college readiness coach and was accepted into the UIW Doctor of Education program with an emphasis in organizational leadership.</p>
<p><strong>Gabriela Canavati ’10 BA</strong> won the prestigious Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship in International Affairs. The Fellowship provides for two years of graduate school with generous stipend, followed by appointment as a Foreign Service Officer of the United States. Canavati is one of only 20 individuals in the U.S. to win the fellowship in 2012.</p>
<p><strong>Antonia Saldana ’10 MAA</strong> began working as director of human resources at Gold Spur Trucking LLC.</p>
<p><strong>Sabrina Koll ’11 MBA</strong> began her new job as federal bank supervision officer at the Federal Bank of Germany.</p>
<p><strong>Phillip James ’11 BA</strong> serves as director of photography &amp; digital effects for a new Mixed Martial Arts reality series, “MMA Cage Quest,” airing weekly on regional station KCWX (Seguin).</p>
<p><strong>George Ybarra ’12 BA</strong> serves as the assistant vice president for service delivery for Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio.</p>
