The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) honored Jesus Rangel (left), interdisciplinary faculty in residence at UIW, with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on behalf of immigrant rights. Rangel, a board member of MALDEF for 16 years, was honored for his dedication and work in helping the organization formulate and execute strategy in challenging state and local laws affecting the rights of immigrants to rent housing, hold jobs and attend public schools. The award was presented in September on behalf of the MALDEF board of directors by former Mayor Henry Cisneros (right) at the organization’s annual meeting and dinner.
