1960s

Dolores Noguera Gresham ’64 BA was elected to the Tennessee State Senate in 2008, becoming the first Latina in the State Senate. Before that, she served in the state’s House of Representatives in 2002. She was also a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marines.

1980s

Jerry Pilato ’83 BA is working for the Nederlander Company (Broadway touring shows) in San Diego.

Kathleen Potts Griffith ’89 BA, BBA appeared in several episodes of NBC’s hit television series “Friday Night Lights” through the summer.

1990s

Marina Garcia Marmolejo ’92 BA was nominated by President Barack Obama to be a federal judge in the U.S. Southern Judicial District of Texas.

Veronica Ann Edwards ’92 MBA, the CEO of San Antonio-based InGenesis Inc., has been named the 2010 SBA Regional Minority Small Business Person of the Year for U.S. Small Business Administration Region VI. The five-state region serves Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Lt. Col. Dr. Caterina Lasome ’93 MBA was named chief of the informatics operations branch for the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology in August 2009.

Raul L. Solis ’94 MBA is the secretary/treasurer for the All American Armed Forces Parade Association (AAAFPA).

Edward Benavides ’98 BA was appointed chief of staff for the City of San Antonio. In this position, he supervises the Communications and Public Affairs Department, Office of Environmental Policy, and the Office of the City Council.  He also provides executive level support to the Office of the City Manager. Previously, Benavides served as assistant director of the Parks and Recreation Department and as executive assistant to the city manager.

2000s

Daniel Leija, '01 BA

Daniel Leija ’01 BA of the Dreeben School of Education’s Teacher Preparation Program, was recently selected as Region 20’s Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year, and he went on to win the 2011 Texas Teacher of the Year. He is a fifth grade teacher at Esparza Elementary School in the Northside Independent School District and is well known for his class science experiments and his extensive science collection.

Arnulfo Maldonado ’01 BA created the set for “Orpheus in the Underworld” for the Central City Opera in Denver.

Dione Bedell ’03 BBA has been hired as the coordinator of admissions and guidance for the UIW Preparatory Online High School.

April Morin ’06 BA started a new job as a regional account supervisor for Leo Burnett/Martin Retail Advertising Group in Atlanta.  She will be working on the General Motors account.

Angela Alejandro ’08 BA earned her master’s degree in education from Baylor University in December. She is teaching psychology at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas.

Sarah Alecozay-Borrego, 2009 BA

Sarah Alecozay-Borrego ’09 BA is serving in the Peace Corps as a volunteer in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone in West Africa.

Juan J. Acuna Jr. ’10 BA was recently hired as the meteorologist weekend anchor for KOSA CBS 7 News TV, and anchor/MYNetwork Station in Odessa, Texas.

Previously, Acuna was working as the reporter/meteorologist for the Alice Echo News Journal in Alice, Texas. While at UIW, Acuna served as the SGA treasurer, SGA junior senator, and meteorology club president. He is enrolled in the geo sciences and applied meteorology master’s degree

program at Mississippi State University.
