Peace Day 2004
Celebration dedicated to finding ways of creating a peaceful world
The University of the Incarnate Word will host Peace Day 2004 on Oct.
27.
The day-long celebration, themed “Imagine,” will focus on
finding ways that peace can be created in our everyday lives, resulting
in a more peaceful world.
The event will begin with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. in front of the Administration Building on the UIW campus (4301 Broadway). In addition to the meaning of Peace Day, visitors will be treated to diverse prayers and music during the opening ceremony.
At 9:30 a.m., the UIW Dreeben School of Education will host a morning of non-violent play for local elementary students from St. Anthony Elementary and St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Elementary.
Local non-profit agencies will display information tables starting at 10 a.m., offering a visitors a chance to learn about the organizations and the many opportunities for community service in our area.
A series of guest speakers will be held throughout the day in the common area outside the Bishop Claude Dubuis Residence Hall.
At 11 a.m., Patricia A. Keefe, faith outreach coordinator for the Nonviolent Peaceforce, will speak to the crowd. Keefe, who has been committed to human rights all her life, will speak on “The Global Nonviolent Peaceforce: The Time Has Come.” She will return to the program at 5:10 p.m. for a viewing of a Global Nonviolent Peaceforce video and discussion.
Alicia Patterson of the group Justice at the Gates will speak at 1:20 p.m. Patterson’s group is committed to bring awareness and justice to our judicial system.
The speaker series continues with Sr. Dorothy Ettling, UIW associate professor of education, and Francis Boakari, UIW professor of education. The professors will present a discussion titled “Africa: How can we help?” The topic will include a discussion of their first-hand experience in Africa and the opportunities available to make a difference.
From 4-6 p.m., guests will learn about peace history and be motivated to make
peace by Peace Award Winner Thr Rev. Ann Helmke and the staff of the San Antonio
peaceCenter.
Author and antiwar activist Rahul Mahajan will close out the speaker series with
a discussion about the conflict in Iraq at 6 p.m.

The Dreeben School of Education will host elementary students from the Brainpower schools for a morning of non-violent play. Free lemonade and cookies.
10:00 - 10:50 a.m. - “Ways to Justice and Peace In the Middle East”
Mohammed Alatar is the director of Palestinians for Peace and Democracy.

A great way to find community service and learn about local non-profit organizations.
11:00 - 11:50 a.m. - “The Global Nonviolent Peaceforce: The Time Has Come”

1:20 - 2:35 p.m. - Alicia Patterson from Justice at the Gates, a group committed to build strategic partnership to mobilize Christians to pray effectively and vote righteously.
2:45 - 4:00 p.m. - “Africa: How Can We Help?” Sr. Dorothy Ettling and Dr. Francis Boakari discuss their first-hand experiences in Africa and present ways that we can help.
4:00 - 6:00 p.m. - LOTERIA, enjoy learning peace history and get motivated to make peace led by Rev. Ann Helmke, Peace Award Winner, and the staff of the SA peaceCENTER.
5:10 - 6:00 p.m. - “Imagine” waging peace, the Global Nonviolent Peaceforce video with discussion by Patricia A. Kefe.
6:00- 7:30 p.m. - Guest Speaker Rahul Mahajan (Marian Hall Ballroom)
Rahul Mahajan, author of many books and antiwar activist will discuss the occupation of Iraq and the prospects for an antiwar movement.
All Week - Domestic Violence Clothesline Project at Marian Hall and Peace Art Exhibit by UIW students at the Fine Arts Building.
