Health and Wellness

As learners begin their journey it is important to emphasize holistic wellness in attending to the mind, body, and spirit. With the physical and emotional demands of this program, positive well-being and good health habits are vital to influence a learner’s academic performance, emotional adjustment, and being prepared for their future professional functioning.By emphasizing the importance of wellness to our learners early and throughout their medical education, UIWSOM seeks to positively impact their functioning and provide resources, as well as services, to better prepare learners to address their health and attend to their well-being effectively while keeping in mind the different areas of wellness that include: mental, emotional, social, physical activity, sleep hygiene, and nutrition.

UIWSOM Immunization Requirements

  • Bacterial Meningitis

All learners are required to be immunized within the past 5 years AND submit poof of immunization at least 10 days before the first day of class.

  • Hepatitis B alone or Hepatitis A/B combo

A standard Hepatitis B (3 injections) or the expedited Hepatitis A&B (TWINRIX) combo vaccine series (4 injections) and antibody titer results are required. If the Hepatitis B surface antibody titer is negative or nonreactive, the entire series must be repeated followed by a second titer (6-8 weeks following series).

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis

All learners must have had one dose of adult Tdap. If the Tdap is more than 10 years old, a Td booster is required.

  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella

Two vaccines of each component or the combo (MMR) following 1st birthday AND lab report of positive antibody titer for all 3 components is required. If one of the three components is negative, a booster is required.

  • Tuberculosis

Proof of a non-reactive tuberculin skin test, negative IGRA blood test, Quantiferon Gold blood test, OR T spot blood test is required within 1 year of first day of class. Individuals with a history of a reactive tuberculin skin test or blood test must provide a current negative chest x-ray, indicating that the person is free of active tuberculosis within 6 months of first day of class. Annual tuberculosis screening will be required.

  • Varicella (Chicken Pox)

Two doses following first birthday and at least 30 days apart or documented history of disease AND a lab report of positive antibody titer are required. If the antibody titer is negative, then a booster is required. If documentation or history is not available, a positive titer indicating immunity is required.

  • Polio

Documentation of at least 3 vaccinations of IPV/OPV. If there is no proof of vaccination, then a series of IPV is required or positive titers indicating immunity.

  • Influenza (Flu) vaccine

This is an annual requirement during flu season (2017-2018); it is required that students get the flu vaccine each year while in the program.

  • Physical Exams

The UIWSOM requires students to submit a signed Physical Examination Form prior to admission and start of Phase III. The program recommends a medical history and physical examination 12 months prior to matriculation and Phase III clinical rotations with submission of updated forms if there is a change in health status.

The information contained in the medical history and physical exam form will be used only by the UIWSOM for purposes of determining if a health threat/risk is posed for students or patients during clinical experiences, rotations or clerkships. This information will remain as part of the secured student file in Castle Branch and will remain confidential at all times.
