Health and Wellness
“Wellness must be a prerequisite to all else. Students cannot be intellectually proficient if they are not physically and psychologically unwell.” – Ernest Boyner
As learners begin their journey it is important to emphasize holistic wellness in attending to the mind, body, and spirit. With the physical and emotional demands of this program, positive well-being and good health habits are vital to influence a learner’s academic performance, emotional adjustment, and being prepared for their future professional functioning.
By emphasizing the importance of wellness to our learners early and throughout their medical education, UIWSOM seeks to positively impact their functioning and provide resources, as well as services, to better prepare learners to address their health and attend to their well-being effectively while keeping in mind the different areas of wellness that include: mental, emotional, social, physical activity, sleep hygiene, and nutrition.
