Thomas Zimmerman, DO, FACOFP, CPHIMS

Thomas Zimmerman, DO, FACOFP, CPHIMSThomas Zimmerman, DO, FACOFP, CPHIMS grew up in Long Island, NY.  After earning a B.S. degree in Animal Physiology at Cornell University, he attended the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYIT-COM) where he earned his D.O. degree.  He completed his training in osteopathic family medicine at Long Beach Medical Center in Long Beach, NY, where he served as Co-Chief Resident.  He is Board-Certified in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, and has practiced full-spectrum, osteopathic family medicine for over thirteen years.

 After working in private practice and urgent care for several years, he joined the full time faculty at NYIT-COM.  Dr. Zimmerman was actively involved in teaching, curriculum development, and patient care.  He was awarded the school’s Standard of Excellence Award in 2006, for his accomplishments as Medical Director of its Academic Health Care Centers. Later that year, he was recruited by South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, NY to become Director of Osteopathic Medical Education, and successfully develop and direct their new Osteopathic Family Practice Residency Program.  While at South Nassau, Dr. Zimmerman oversaw the training of hundreds of medical students and residents over nine years.  He established additional osteopathic training programs, and helped develop and innovate educational curricula at both undergraduate and graduate medical education arenas.

Dr. Zimmerman is a nationally recognized expert on medical informatics.  He has served both on the Board of Trustees and as President of the American Osteopathic Association of Medical informatics. Dr. Zimmerman chairs the ACOFP’s Committee on Medical Homes and Accountable Care Organizations.  He received his Fellowship and Crest Award for Outstanding Paper from the ACOFP in 2010.  Dr. Zimmerman is a certified professional in health information management systems, and is completing his MBA degree at the State University of New York Empire State College.

Dr. Zimmerman is excited to join the UIW School of Medicine team as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
