3301-Introduction to Sports Management
Survey and introduction to the field of Sports Management. Topics include types and structures of sports organizations, local to global, quality management, leadership, governance, strategic planning, performance review, information systems, and introduction to sports research (Fall 2001 & Spring 2003).
3302-Human Factors in Sports Management
Overview of individual and organizational dynamics that effect human behavior and performance. Includes value of the individual, self-awareness, motivation, inter-personal skills, teamwork, decisions, ethics and values, organizational communication and culture, and activities (Spring 2002 & Fall 2003).
3303-Seminar in Sports Organizations and Public Market
Organization and promotion of special events. Topics include communication and mass media, marketing and advertising, finance, economics of sports and community impact. Requires service learning component and on-site orientation and activities (Fall 2002 & Spring 2004).
3306-Sports Law
The issues of law relevant to all aspects of sports including quasi-governmental agencies, antitrust and discrimination issues (Spring odd years).
3319-Internship in Sports Management
Requires 120 hours of work in a major sports organization and a project. Prerequisites: 9 hours in Sports Management and permission of instructor (every semester).
Graduate
6380 Sports Management
Introduction to management as a unifying theme in all aspects of sport. General topics include management styles, management of facilities, management of educational institutions, sports promotion organizations and professional sports. Individual topics include strategic planning and the social sciences, marketing and public relations, multicultural issues, and research. Research project required.
6382 Human Resources in Sports Management
Selected topics include management of personnel involved in sports organizations, including leadership, management style, personal skills, hiring and interviewing practices, conflict resolution, contracts, managing athletics during training, time management, and personnel problems. Research project required.
6384 Leadership and Organization in Sports Management
Selected topics include management and logistics of sports organizations, facilities, large groups of people, problems in sports organizations, community relationships, multicultural aspects of the sports business, fund raising and distribution, organizational development, strategic planning and sports law. Research project required.
6385 Sports and the Law
This course presents a systematic picture of how the law influences the shape of sports. It will present the distinctive challenges that the world of sports poses to the legal system and intriguing lessons one can draw for the broader legal system from the way the law addresses the special problems posed by sports.
6390 Research and Decision Analysis in Human Performance
An introduction to quantitative research in Sports Management and the other physical activity sciences. Includes a comprehensive survey of research methods associated with data gathering, sampling, summary statistics, hypothesis testing, and evaluating quantitative research with simple and complex experimental designs. Students will gain competency in using computer software for statistical analysis and presentation. Students will be able to utilize the following statistical tools: analysis of variance and follow-up procedures, correlation, simple linear regression, and associated diagnostic techniques. Prerequisite: undergraduate course in statistics.
