Regular Admission Process

This route allows students to apply for admission into the Traditional BSN at the University of the Incarnate Word. Application process and specific deadlines can be found at How to Apply.

Admission Criteria

  • Completion of prerequisite coursework (see below)
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all coursework to date
  • A minimum GPA of 2.5 in prerequisite science coursework (Biology, Chemistry and Nutrition courses)
  • Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS) by Assessment Technologies Institute®,LLC

(Students who score at the Proficient Level or higher will be considered for admission.)

Fulfillment of these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. The applicant's entire academic record is considered, and an interview may be required. Completion of prerequisite courses, health requirements and a background check is also required.

Pre-requisite Coursework

At the time of program application, the applicant must have completed or be currently enrolled in:

  • English Composition I and II (not required for second degree seeking students)
  • Biological or Organic Chemistry (with lab) - see degree plan for details

Note for Alamo Colleges Students: The Alamo College equivalent of the required chemistry class is 1407, which includes the lab and lecture. However, 1407 has a prerequisite of 1405 so students transferring from the Alamo Colleges will be required to take 1405 and 1407 to satisfy the Biological or Organic chemistry requirement. (Some of the Alamo colleges may offer the lab and lecture separately, which is acceptable so long as both are taken. 1305+1105=1405, and 1307+1107=1407). Click here to see articulation.

  • Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab
  • Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab
  • Microbiology with Lab
  • Nutrition
  • Statistics
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Child/Adolescent and Adult Development OR Lifespan Development
  • Dimensions of Wellness (if new to UIW, may complete upon admission)

Students applying for Fall 2017 and beyond are not required to take Speech as a prerequisite.

Criminal Background Check

Applicants will be directed to complete a background check by the nursing program.

Confirmation fees

Upon admittance into the program, students must submit a BSN tuition deposit. The $250 deposit is required within the timeframe designated by the acceptance letter to hold and confirm the spot in the entering class. The full fee is non-refundable if a student later decides not to attend UIW. Two weeks after the first day of class, $250 will be reimbursed to the student's account.

Transfer students will also need to pay the $100 university confirmation fee upon admittance into the BSN program.
