Calculating Your Grade Point Average

Home  >  Office Of The Registrar  >  Calculating Your Grade Point Average

Your grade point average (GPA) is the numerical average of your progress at the University.  It is reflective of the credit hours you have attempted and the grades you have earned.  Each grade is assigned grade points which are then multiplied by the credit hour production for the course.

The cumulative GPA is computed by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credits attempted, based upon courses attempted at UIW.  The following points are assigned to grades at UIW:

Letter
Grade
Grade
Points
Numeric
Grade
A 4.0 93 and above
A- 3.7 90 - 92
B+ 3.3 87 - 89
B 3.0 83 - 86

D+ 1.3 67 - 69
D 1.0 63 - 66
D- 0.7 60 - 62

The following grades are not used in computing the GPA:  IP, W, N, or P.

The cumulative GPA of 2.0 will be considered the basis for good academic standing.  Students falling below the cumulative GPA of 2.00 may be placed on academic probation or suspension and may be in danger of losing any financial aid awarded to them.

A cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required for graduation which must be met by the end of the first semester of the senior year.
