The Meaning of the Term Provost
The term Provost originates from Medieval times, denoting “a person placed over others” – a senior administrator or superintendant. Also, the term “Provost” has been in use for centuries as the name of the highest official at a cathedral or collegiate church – from that usage, it acquired a religious component. Over time, Provost has acquired the connotation of a person of experience and wisdom, of high rank, and one who provides leadership and guidance to others.
Provost at the University of the Incarnate Word is used as the name of an administrator of high rank – in this case, the name of the Chief Academic Officer for the university. Dr. Light, as the University Provost, reports directly to the President and is Chief Administrator in his absence. In turn, she provides vision and direction across all university academic programs, through the Deans and faculty members. Additionally, she provides leadership through personal contact, through a number of senior University committees, and through specific initiatives that originate from her office.
