Welcome to the Office of the Provost at the University of the Incarnate Word.
As the Chief Academic Officer of the University, I report directly to the president. The Provost oversees the integrity of all academic programs of the University, representing the academic endeavors of the University to external accrediting agencies and constituencies. The Provost is responsible for academic strategic planning, evaluating academic deans, the overall quality of the curriculum and instruction, faculty recruitment, development activities, and promotion and tenure. The Provost fosters a spirit of collaboration among all departments in order to better achieve the Mission of the University and create an environment committed to student success.
The following is a snapshot of the University and the students we serve.
UIW’s current enrollment is over nine thousand undergraduate and graduate students, making it the largest Catholic university in Texas as well as the fourth largest private university in the state. Enrollment at UIW has almost tripled since the year 2000.
We serve a greater percentage of minority and first-generation college students than the other large private universities in the state. Currently, over one-third of “traditional” UIW students are first-generation college students at nearly double the national average. Like San Antonio, UIW has a student population that is composed primarily of minorities, predominantly Hispanic. Because of their low-income status, 90 percent of UIW students receive financial aid.
UIW offers over 80 undergraduate and graduate fields of study, including the areas of Fine Arts, Education, Nursing & Health Professions, Natural and Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Business, Communication Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Pharmacy, Optometry, Physical Therapy, and 7 Pre-Professional Programs. At UIW, we have worked to provide students with an environment that encourages excellence in academics. The overall student-to-faculty classroom ratio is 14:1.
UIW is nationally recognized for its academic success with underrepresented Hispanic populations. Hispanic Business consistently has ranked UIW as one of the top 10 best colleges and universities for Hispanic students. Of the 2,450 institutions in the United States accredited as baccalaureate-granting, four-year colleges and universities, UIW is recognized as one of the top 100 U.S. institutions graduating Hispanics with bachelor’s degrees. In fact, UIW is ranked number one nationally among faith-based universities in the awarding of bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics, and number two nationally among all private universities.
The UIW system continues to develop locally, nationally and internationally. There are 5 satellite locations in San Antonio and Corpus Christi, and the university has campuses in Mexico and in Heidelberg, Germany. UIW has over 100 “sister schools” in 37 countries.
And we are also a great place to work as acknowledged by The Chronicle of Higher Education over several years and a regular on the national Top 10 Honor Roll in the medium-size college category!
