Vincent Rodriguez has served as Assistant to the President/Communications at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas since 2000. A member of the president's cabinet, he facilitates communications with internal and external constituencies of the president, conducts special projects for the president, and serves as recorder for meetings of the Executive Council.
Mr. Rodriguez previously served as pop music critic for The Dallas Morning News; features writer at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times; sports and news reporter for the Dallas Times Herald; and print and broadcast reporter for United Press International.
His work has appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review, The Baltimore Sun, the Orlando Sentinel, the Times Union (Albany, NY), the San Antonio Express-News, The Pittsburgh Press, The Post and Courier (Charleston, SC), the Bangor Daily News (Maine) and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was also cited in Joe Nick Patoski’s book on Selena Quintanilla, “Selena: Como La Flor,” a biography on the late Tejano singer. Additionally, Mr. Rodriguez co-wrote the introduction and helped edit “Lou: From Brooklyn to Broadway” by Patricia A. Watkins.
His past honors include a First Place Award for Arts and Entertainment Criticism from the Corpus Christi Press Club and a Special Service Award from the National Association of Black Journalists (University of Iowa chapter). He’s also a recipient of several national academic journalism awards, including the Ruben Salazar Scholarship Award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and The Freedom Forum Scholarship Award. He’s twice been inducted into the Kappa Tau Alpha Journalism Honor Society.
Mr. Rodriguez's current and past professional memberships include the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Dallas/Fort Worth Network of Hispanic Communicators, and the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education. He’s also a past board member of the Journal of Communication Inquiry at the University of Iowa.
A native of Puerto Rico, Mr. Rodriguez has a Master’s in Journalism from the University of Iowa (with thesis), where he was a Graduate Fellow, and a Bachelor’s in Journalism from TCU, with a minor in Geography. He was also awarded a certificate of completion for Crisis Leadership in Higher Education, an Executive Education program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
