KATHLEEN MARTIN
Assistant Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences kamartin@uiwtx.edu

Dr. Kathleen Martin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Her training is in Pharmaceutics, the study of dosage form design and drug delivery. Dr. Martin worked for 10+ years in pharmaceutical analysis before moving on to earn her Doctorate.
Dr. Martin holds a bachelors degree in Chemistry from Northland College (Ashland, Wisconsin). Dr. Martin earned Master of Science (1992) and Doctor of Philosophy (1995) degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research interests include evaluation of the stability of medications compounded in community pharmacy, new ways to involve student pharmacists in applying pharmaceutics knowledge and skills to contemporary pharmacy practice, and educational research to develop student professionalism and success.
Dr. Martin’s bench research at the UIW-FSOP has included microbiological stability testing of nystatin, an anti-fungal, drug and tetracycline hydrochloride, an antibiotic, in a compounded mixture. Teaching research methods to student research assistants provides support for both Dr. Martin’s research goals and for students to experience pharmacy professional roles in basic research.
Dr. Martin has taught since 1995. In addition to teaching pharmaceutics courses, including the design, preparation and evaluation of dosage forms for individual patients, Dr. Martin has developed and implemented many courses during years spent at Butler University (1994-2001) and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy (2001-2005). Pharmacy courses developed and taught include Introduction to Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacy Calculations, Biopharmaceutics and Basic Pharmacokinetics. Dr. Martin enjoys laboratory based courses because they afford the opportunity to work closely with individual students.
Dr. Martin is active in professional organizations, including the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP). She is Faculty Advisor for Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS, the Pharmacy Leadership Society) and National Community Pharmacy Association (NCPA), student professional organizations that are forming for the 2008-2009 Academic Year.
Dr. Martin’s three wonderful young adults all live in the Midwest. Cynthia is a Music Education graduate of DePauw University (Indiana), currently working for Paige’s Music in Indianapolis. Robert is an Army Reserve Firefighter and math major graduate of Webster University (St. Louis, Missouri). Daniel is pursuing an Elementary Education degree at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri.
