John joins the faculty as an Assistant Professor in Pharmacy Practice.

Dr. Tovar graduated from the University of Florida with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2002 and then completed a 2-year fellowship in Family Medicine at the same institution. Dr. Tovar comes to UIW from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he was as Assistant Professor within the Department of Family and Community Medicine of the College of Medicine.

Dr. Tovar is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) where he serves as a co-chair and editor for the Group on Pharmacotherapy. Dr. Tovar has been published in numerous medical journals including the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Research. He is a co-author of the chapters on adrenal disorders in the latest editions of Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach and the recently published Drug-Induced Diseases: Prevention, Detection, and Management. Dr. Tovar’s areas of research interest include antimicrobial resistance and ways to improve outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease.
