Catechesis as Ministry of the Word

Two-day Ministry Conference
Dr. Kathleen H. Brown and David Orr

Friday and Saturday, June 20-21, 2008
Friday: morning, afternoon, and evening sessions
Saturday: morning and afternoon sessions
UIW International Conference Center

Catechists and Catholic religious educators are not only teachers, but also ministers of the Word.  They are instruments of the Lord’s power and signs of the Spirit’s presence (NCD #208).  This conference will address how they can make the Word a part of their own lives, as well as the lives of their students, through prayer, story, and poetry.  We will explore scriptural texts for the images and metaphors which speak to our faith, to the deepest longings of our hearts, and to the role of the catechist.  This Conference will include morning, afternoon and evening sessions on Friday, and morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday.  Cost: $45 per person. ($35 pp. for groups of 3 or more).  A light lunch will be provided on both days.

Dr. Kathleen H. Brown, D. Min., is the Director of Formation for Ministry and an adjunct professor at Washington Theological Union.  In addition to many articles on lay ministry and spirituality, she is the author of Lay Leaders of Worship: A Practical and Spiritual Guide (Liturgical Press), and co-author with David Orr of Companions on the Journey: The Gift of Spiritual Friendship (DeSales Resource Center).  Dr. Brown presents retreats, workshops and parish missions across the U.S.  She holds a doctorate in spiritual formation from the Catholic University of America.

David Orr earned a B.A. in English, with a focus in creative writing, from Northern Arizona University.  Currently, he is a career senior executive with the U.S. Department of Justice.  As an avocation, he writes poetry as a form of prayer, through which God draws near to hearts and shares in our deepest feelings.  He co-authored Companions on the Journey with Dr. Kathy Brown

UIW Pastoral Institute students may earn one semester hour of academic credit through participation in the full conference and completion of some academic requirements, see the Course Listings.
