Every year, students from across the state of Texas descend on the city of Austin to participate in the annual Texas Optometry Association (TOA) conference. The annual TOA conference provides these students a unique opportunity to gain knowledge about the profession, network with ODs along with other students, and learn about educational opportunities at optometry schools.
These students are active members of their university Pre-Optometry Professional Society (POPS) organizations. This year, these undergraduate students represented 9 universities and are often members of campus organizations that provide guidance toward a professional career in the field of optometry. The student experience at TOA culminates in the annual Quiz Bowl competition pitting students from both large and small universities from all corners of Texas. Each team is represented by 4 members of the POPS organization from their respective institution.
The Quiz Bowl competition consists of 3 rounds with the top 5 teams advancing to the final round. UIW dominated the competition early and maintained their lead by correctly answering all final round questions. Students participating in the Quiz Bowl are challenged in many subjects including Politics, TOA/AOA Structure, Optometry History, Ocular Anatomy, Optics, and Pop Culture.
The UIW POPS team was led by their President, Felicia Cortez. Felicia was very proud of the work that was done by the entire POPS team and organization. Following their victory, Felicia recognized RSO Vision Science faculty for their contributions to preparing these students, “I Feel like I have to give a lot of credit to RSO for the great professors that have taught us.”
The UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry wishes to congratulate the UIW POPS students on their achievement.
