The UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry (UIWRSO) would like to congratulate Dr. Russell Coates on receiving the Edward Zlotkowski Faculty Award for Service Learning. As a deserving recipient, Dr. Coates is being recognized for his efforts in the schcoatesawardool of optometry to establish and resource continuing mission trips to Panama, Oaxaca, Guatemala, Chimbote, and the Rio Grande Valley.  In addition to the vision screenings conducted during the optometry internship course, UIWRSO also provides approximately 15-20 vision screening dates outside of course work as community service.  Students that complete mission trips will submit a reflection piece to connect clinical experiences with service learning and Dr. Coates is working to add this element to required clinical courses.  While Dr. Coates is unable to conduct all of the screenings and mission trips personally, he is committed to providing care to communities in need through connecting with groups both inside and outside UIWRSO to ensure resources are available and scheduling is possible.    On behalf of the entire UIWRSO family, thank you and congratulations to Dr. Coates on this award.
