Kyle Sandberg, O.D., F.A.A.O.

sandbergClinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Kyle Sandberg was born in Chicago, IL and raised in South Florida.  In 2007, he graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Microbiology with a minor in Psychology.   He then was admitted to Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry where he earned a Doctorate in Optometry as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Vision Science.  Following Optometry School, he was accepted into a residency in Ocular Disease and Ocular and Refractive Surgery at the Eye Center of Texas in Houston.  This residency concentrated on tertiary care of complex ocular disease patients and the co-management of retinal, oculoplastic, glaucoma, corneal, cataract and refractive surgeries.

Immediately following the completion of his residency training, Dr. Sandberg joined the Rosenberg School of Optometry faculty in 2012.  He is currently a Senior Clinical Instructor and Chief of Refractive Surgery and Laser Services for the School.   He became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in October of 2013.  He serves RSO in many roles.  He has developed the curriculum and acts as the sole instructor for the Clinical Internship course series in the undergraduate Vision Science program.  Additionally, he teaches second, third and fourth year professional students in classroom, laboratory and clinical settings.  Dr. Sandberg has pioneered the development of the Peri-Operative Clinical Rotation at RSO.  This rotation is the first and only clinical experience of its kind in the country.  Student interns have the opportunity to co-manage refractive surgery and cataract cases at all levels of patient care, as well as observe state-of-the-art surgical procedures first-hand in the operating room.  The rotation also exposes the intern to several FDA clinical trials that are investigating the use of the latest technology in eye care before the products are commercially available.

Dr. Sandberg has been a speaker at the local, state, regional, national and international levels on topics ranging from systemic disease to cutting edge developments in cataract surgery.  This February, he will be a featured speaker on the Refractive Surgery Panel at the Texas Optometric Association’s annual meeting in Austin.  He is also currently working on two IRB approved studies.  The first is investigating the current standards for state mandated vision screenings in Texas.  The goal of the study is to determine if additional basic testing beyond the currently required evaluation of visual acuity would result in a higher referral rate of Texas school-aged children to eye care professionals.  The second is attempting to correlate academic performance in Texas children with their ability to converge the eyes (a skill that is necessary for sustained periods of reading).   In addition to research aimed at helping children, Dr. Sandberg has research interests in glaucoma, ocular disease and the use of new ocular surgical devices.
