Distinguishing the facts from the half-truths is not always easy when reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.  The message sometimes changes to fit a certain question or section.  For instance in one chapter he states that his diet is not a high fat diet and that "the largest sources of fat in the modern diet are the junk foods and convenience foods" that he would never allow.  Yet later in the book he includes recipes that derive from 60 to 78 % of their calories from fat.  This is much higher than the percentage of fat that the typical American consumes.

The best recommendations for healthy weight loss, however, remain simple and straightforward.  Eat less and move more.  It's still a good idea to include a variety of foods each day.  The benefits of consuming more fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, cereals and pasta, and less fat (especially saturated fat) are described by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the American Dietetic Association in their web sites.  The benefits of regular exercise are numerous and something that even Dr. Atkins can't deny.

For those of you who still feel like you want to eat a very few servings of fruits and vegetables and almost no bread or pasta or pizza crust and like the idea of checking your urine for the presence of ketones just consider one more thing.  The following activities would allow you to burn the maximum number of calories that ketosis could provide (up to 150 calories per day):
¤ stair walking for 15 minutes
¤ walking 2 miles in 30 minutes
¤ gardening for 30-45 minutes
¤ raking leaves for 30 minutes
¤ dancing (fast) for 30 minutes
