UIW conferred degrees to graduates at a commencement ceremony held Sunday, Dec. 16 in the Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum.The commencement honored the over 900 students who completed their degree either in August or at the end of the fall semester. Seven hundred fifty students participated in Sunday’s ceremony.Sixty-eight were veterans who were awarded the UIW Veterans Tribute Stole.

Ringing of the Chapel Bell at 9:30 a.m. this morning for the lives lost in Connecticut
At 9:30 this morning, we will be joining Churches and communities around the country as we toll our Chapel bell for the lives lost in Connecticut one week ago. If you would like to share this moment with others, we will gather in the Incarnate Word Chapel foyer (around the Holy Water fount). If you cannot, or prefer not to join in person; we ask that you observe a moment of silence as we toll the bell.

Blackboard will be updated over the Christmas holiday. The main update you will see to Blackboard are design enhancements. You will have a new login page as well as a fresher, cleaner user interface. Please note that how you currently interact with your course (adding content, for example) will remain unchanged. There are also a few new and enhanced tools. Message from The City of San Antonio’s Capital Improvements Management Services Department
This is to announce the start of construction on the Broadway Corridor PH III project.The contractor will work on the traffic signal at Allensworth from Dec 18 to Friday Dec 21.The work will resume on Jan 2, 2013. All of the traffic signal work will be done during the hours of 7:00 to 6:00 daily. There will be lane closures of the right lane to both north and south bound traffic to accomplish the required work. Students and faculty of the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, organized by nursing faculty member, Yvonne Davila, shared hundreds of holiday gifts, play activities and music with children ranging from infants to teens on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the 2nd Annual Haven for Hope Child Care Christmas party.
Dr. Srihari Narayanan invited to teach Optometry Department of Beuth Hochschule in Berlin
Dr. Srihari Narayanan, associate professor and director of cornea and dry eye service at the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO), was invited to teach at the Optometry Department of Beuth Hochschule, Berlin, Germany. He taught 16 Master of Science Optometry students, who will obtain their degrees from Salus University, Pennsylvania. The students originated from four European countries as well as from China. Dr. Narayanan will later participate in mentoring some of these students to perform their research projects.
RSO faculty new hires meet with Dr. Susan Hall
During the Fall 2012 semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning effort at RSO has emphasizednew faculty.This year, the optometry faculty created a checklist of tasks and resources for newly hired faculty, which included a meeting with Dr. Susan Hall. She met individually with each of the newly hired faculty members as they came on campus.The goalsof the meeting were to discuss experiences they could build on as they began their teaching at UIW andto discover at least one resource thatwould be immediatelyhelpful to each. In each case, the follow-up included an article, webpage or other simple resource addressing a teachingissue of concern or interest to each individual. Dr. Hall reports that she learned a tremendous amount about the various forms teaching takes in health care programs. Additionally, once or twice a month Dr. Hall also had open office hours on the RSO campus.
UIW Mobile Tech Research Expands to Austin
UIW mobile tech research expands to businesses in Austin, Texas, for the first time on Dec 19, 2012. Dr. Bo Han, instructor of management information systems at UIW, went to BarZ Adventures, a mobile tech supported location based service company in Austin Texas, and had the first meeting with the management of the company. The purposes of this meeting with the company include: (1) promoting UIW brand and mobile tech research at UIW and (2) requesting potential job positions for students who will graduate from the forthcoming iOS app development class at UIW in Spring 2013. BarZ Adventure agreed that qualified students from the app development class at UIW could be potential summer interns in the company. The professional developers in BarZ Adventure will be technological mentors to UIW student developers. UIW mobile tech researchers and BarZ Adventure will have other collaborations such as programming project research, human resources recruitment from UIW, etc.BarZ Adventures is the industry leader in the development of GPS-activated smartphone application technology. Its iPhone and Android apps are designed to be an interactive map and multimedia experience for users. Current BarZ Adventures customers range from newspapers to scenic byways to college campuses.
