Moody Lecture
Dr. David Campos, UIW’s Moody Professor for 2010-11, will present his Moody Lecture, “The Childhood Obesity Epidemic: Jump Start Health as Prevention” at noon Monday, Jan. 24 in the Mabee Library Special Collections Suite.

Race for the Cure Team
The Feik School of Pharmacy and pre-pharmacy students invite the UIW community to join our Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Team. The race will be Saturday, April 30.If you register before Jan. 31, you can save $5.Last year we raised more than $8,000, making us No. 1of the school fundraising teams in San Antonio. Ask An Advisor Day
Do you need a question answered about investing, retirement planning, saving for college, or creating/changing a will or trust? UIW will host a call-in/e-mail session called Ask An Advisor Day from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8. Members of the UIW Planned Giving Council will be standing by to take your calls and e-mails on questions/issues related to wills, trusts, retirement, insurance or investment planning. Extended Academic Programs Student Appreciation Reception
Faculty and students from ADCaP and the Virtual University are invited to a Student Appreciation Reception from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. New Student Veteran Orientation
Join us for the Spring 2011 UIW New Student Veteran Orientation Lunch & Learn from noon to 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 in the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Library auditorium. Representatives from UIW offices will answer students’ questions about using VA educational benefits at UIW. Included will be a “Transition from Military to Civilian Life” workshop, presented by representatives from the local San Antonio Vet Center. Pizza and cookies will be served in the library foyer. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday
UIW will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Test of the Fire Alarm System Today
Risk and Safety management will test the fire alarm system today in the AD building. There will be flashing audio visuals along with music playing. Please disregard both. You will only need to evacuate the building if you hear the normal sirens going off that indicate there is a fire.

Red Dress Health Tips
Plan something active and fun this weekend. Have you thought about walking the new extension of the River Walk? Is it time for a bike ride or a night of dancing? Turn off the television and the computer, and take the family bowling. Consider walking in the MLK March for inspiration.

Call for Submissions for Quirk 2011
UIW's creative arts journal Quirk is inviting submissions from everyone in the university community. Send your original creative work, such as poems, short stories, essays, songs, photographs and digital images of paintings, drawings, fashion sketches, sculptures or pottery to stampfl@uiwtx.edu by Jan. 31. Don’t use identifying marks on the artwork(s) or manuscript(s), but include a separate sheet with your name, title of your work, media/genre and contact information. Include a translation if the work is not in English. In honor of the NEH grant that was awarded to CHASS, we invite creative work that explores or depicts the role of water as cultural symbol. Faculty Focus

Grant Received
Dr. Paul David Foglesong, of the biology department, has received a grant of $20,000 from the William and Ella Owens Medical Research Foundation. The grant will support Foglesong's continuing research on human T cells including their sensitivity to antitumor drugs.This is the third extramural grant he has received in the past three years totaling more than $110,000, which has supported six graduate students performing thesis research for their MS in Biology. Congratulations!

IWHS Salsa and Scholarships Fundraiser
Incarnate Word High School’s annual Salsa and Scholarships Fundraiser will be from 2:30 – 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6 at La Hacienda de Los Barrios, 18747 Redland Road. Advance tickets for adults (13 and older) cost $30, and at the door cost $35. Children 6-12 cost $7 at the door, and children 5 and younger eat free. Tickets include a fajita buffet, one free margarita or beer, silent auction and entertainment. Please support our efforts to raise money for scholarships for IWHS students.
