UIW History Club students visited local refugees to donate toys and clothes for Christmas.
The UIW History Club held a toy and clothing drive to bring the joy of the season to the Refugee Resettlement in San Antonio. UIW students and faculty donated generously throughout the semester. On Dec. 10, the History Club students – Kimberlee Ortiz, Justin Burklow, Zach Schudrowitz, Brandon Ochoa and Fred  Pompa – with adjunct history faculty Mary Elise Ferrer and led by Dr. Lopita Nath, visited the refugees at Garden Dale in San Antonio. The groups that they met with were primarily from Myanmar, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. Rey Lopez of the Catholic Charities said these were probably the only toys that these children will be getting this Christmas. The refugees thanked us all in their own languages. The students said that it was a great way to end the semester.

Alumni Night at Cowboy’s Dance Hall
The next UIW alumni event is Thursday, Feb. 4 at Cowboy’s Dance Hall. The evening costs $10 per person, which includes admission, dance lessons at 7:30 p.m., food and one drink (beer or soda). Food will be served from 7-8 p.m. in a separate alumni area upstairs. Register online at www.uiwalumni.org/cowboys. Sign up ASAP because having a large, early rush of registrants online will help us estimate the amount of food to purchase from the caterer. For more information, contact Rick Smith at (210) 829-6014 or alumni@uiwtx.edu. Thank you for your continued participation in the UIW Alumni Association as we continue to strengthen the bond between our alumni and our beloved alma mater.
