CCVI Spirit Award
Sr. Audrey O’Mahony is asking for nominations for the CCVI Spirit Award. The nominees should fit the following guidelines:

  • Clearly represent the values of UIW
  • Be involved in activities that demonstrate major service to UIW
  • Have a concrete record of service to the local/national community

Selection will be made by a committee composed mostly of former CCVI Spirit Awardees. Contact Sr. Audrey for a nomination form, which are due to the Chairperson, Box 139, by Feb. 17.

2nd Annual Mardi Gras King and Queen Penny Drive
Campus Ministry is sponsoring the 2nd annual Penny Drive from Jan. 22 through Feb. 5 (Fat Tuesday). Faculty from each school will be in the running for Mardi Gras King and Queen.Bring your pennies, quarters, nickels and dimes and put them in your favorite faculty’s bucket.It is only a two week competition. In the first week, the top three male and top three female professors will proceed to the final week of competition to see who will be Mardi Gras King and Queen. All proceeds will go to support the Pre-Pharmacy and Pharmacy School in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.Last year we raised $1,000. Let’s shoot for $1,100 or more! Winners will be announced at a Mardi Gras party in Dubuis Lounge with food and games from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Free Concert
Justin Graves, a Christian artist, will perform a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at Trinity Baptist Church.For samples of his music and for more information, visit


Guitar Hero Face-Off – Location Change
UIW presents the first Guitar Hero Face-Off at 6 p.m. today at Java on the Hill. The grand prize is a $100 meal card.

Catch the Cardinal Spirit
Before the basketball game against St. Mary’s University, come out to Cardinal Craze at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21 outside the Convocation Center for free food, music and more! Wear red and bring spirit signs. There will be prizes for the most spirited Cardinal fans! Then stay for the men’s basketball game between rivals UIW and St. Mary’s University scheduled for 8 p.m.Monday, Jan. 21 in the Convocation Center. Admission is free with a UIW ID or $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12. It will be broadcast live on CTSA, Time Warner channel 15. Catch the spirit!

PhD Information Session
There will be a PhD information session at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 in the ICC Conference Room.

Department News

W-2 and W-4 Forms
W-2 forms
The Payroll Department will be mailing W-2 forms for the tax year ending Dec. 31, 2007, by Jan. 31, 2008. The W-2 will be mailed to the address on your last paycheck or direct deposit remittance. If this address is incorrect, notify Human Resources to have your address changed. All W-2 forms will be mailed.

W-4 forms
If you claim an exemption from withholding taxes on your W-4 for 2007, that exemption will expire on Feb. 15, 2008. You must come by the Payroll Office to renew that exemption for 2008. If you do not renew your exemption, it will default to “Single” and “0 exemptions.” There have been changes in the tax laws concerning this exemption.  Some employees who were eligible in the past may not be eligible in 2008. The Payroll Office will assist you in this matter.

Gate Closure
The university’s Hwy. 281 entrance will be closed from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20. A crane is being brought in for construction.

Art Reception – Date Correction
The opening reception for Metaphysikos: The Mystical Art of Kirk Clark – A one person exhibit by Professor Joe Bravo will be at 5 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Semmes Art Gallery.

Book signing
Book Signing
Gary A. Keith, an assistant professor of political science at UIW, will be signing copies of his book, Eckhardt: There Once Was a Congressman from Texas. Congressman Bob Eckhardt was a liberal Democrat who successfully championed progressive causes, from workers’ rights to consumer protection to environmental preservation and energy conservation. His political leadership (and his Wurzbach family roots) often brought him to San Antonio. He worked with Maury Maverick, Maury Maverick Jr., Henry B. Gonzalez, and other San Antonians in political and legislative initiatives. The book signing will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the Twig Book Shop. Congratulations Gary! High Schools

IWHS Events

  • IWHS is holding an Honors Assembly at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23.
  • Admission applications are being reviewed for the prospective students of the class of 2012. The final decision letters and phone calls will be made on Feb. 1.
  • Throughout the final week of January, IWHS will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with liturgy and a variety of other activities.


St. Peter Elementary Registration
St. Peter Prince of Apostles is beginning the registration process for the 2008-09 academic year. Registration forms will be due back to the school office by Jan. 23. Open registration will begin Jan. 25.
