Sign Up for Blackboard Jungle Sessions
All full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty are invited to the next Blackboard Jungle sessions Monday, Jan. 7 through Wednesday, Jan. 9. Reservations are required and will be taken through Jan. 5 by Terry Peak at tpeak@uiwtx.edu. Type “Blackboard” in the subject line. Sessions with fewer than five registrants will be canceled. If there is enough interest, afternoon sessions for the advanced courses will be scheduled. All sessions will be held in Room 230 of the Mabee Library. The schedule is as follows:

  • Monday, Jan. 7, 8 - 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 - 9 p.m. (Two sessions); Blackboard Basics: Both sessions will focus on providing entry-level assistance in the use of Blackboard. The first hour will show you how to navigate the Blackboard Course Management System. Then there will be a discussion about employing good teaching practice when creating a course shell and planning course content. The session will also include a review of the features and benefits of Blackboard content. There will be ample opportunity to create course content for your spring course.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 8, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.; Advanced Blackboard, Session 1: Communication. During the Christmas break, Blackboard will be upgraded to version 7.3; which includes an upgraded and more user-friendly discussion board. This session will focus on using and administering the new discussion board. In addition, there will be demonstrations of the chat, virtual classroom, wikis, blogs and podcasting features. There will be an opportunity to create a discussion board within your spring course shell.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 9, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.; Advanced Blackboard, Session 2: Using Blackboard Assessments, Surveys and the Gradebook. This session will focus on creating and administering tests and surveys in Blackboard. The test manager is a more complex content area, so this session will explain ways to build and administer a seamless and secure assessment. The course will also focus on using the Gradebook, not just as a repository for grades, but as a method of communicating with students about their performance. The session will conclude with a tutorial on Turnitin. Many of our faculty members know the benefits of this service, so we will show you how to create a Turnitin assignment and interpret the Turnitin Originality Report.

Each class includes step-by-step instruction within your own course. Candidates for the basic Blackboard course are first-time users or faculty who use Blackboard on a limited basis. Candidates for the advanced courses have used Blackboard before or want to use the discussion board, Gradebook or assessment features this semester. It is recommended that the basic course be taken prior to any advanced sessions. For more information call Terry Peak at 829-3920, or e-mail him at tpeak@uiwtx.edu.

Until the start of the next semester, Campus Police will not be ticketing for permits, but will continue to enforce all other parking violations such as fire lanes and handicapped spaces. For questions, contact Ana Fuentes at 829-6030 or fuentesa@uiwtx.edu.
