The university is gearing up for this year’s Light the Way ceremony, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

Mission

Memorial Service
There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word for the late Dr. Winifred Murray, professor emerita of sociology.

Events

Navajo Weaver Visits
Navajo weaver Beverly Allen, who has taught and shown her work around the world, will be at UIW next week. Monday through Thursday, she will demonstrate weaving techniques and offer instruction from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. in the Coates Theater lobby.On Thursday, Nov. 15, she will speak on Navajo textile production at noon in the library auditorium.On Friday, the Native American Heritage Month Committee will host a reception in the Special Collections Room of the library from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.If you are interested in studying weaving or in meeting with Allen, contact Dr. Sally Said at said@uiwtx.edu.

Veterans Day Ceremony
UIW will honor our nearly 300 veteran students and employees in a Veterans Day Ceremony. The ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12 on Dubuis Lawn and will include reflections from students who are active duty or veterans.

Afghanistan Presentation
There will be photos of what is happening in places like Heart, high school students in native dress dancing Attan and a panel discussion called “Da Ghrona Ghrona Afghanistan.” The presentation will be from 1-2 p.m. and from 3-4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 in the ICC auditorium.

UIW Community Orchestra Concert
The UIW Community Orchestra will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Oblate School of Theology Memorial Chapel (285 Oblate Drive). The concert is free.

Sober Roads Awareness Rally
As part of the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, UIW is sponsoring the Sober Roads Awareness Rally. The event will be from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Student Center Food Court. Student leaders, KUIW and Mothers Against Drunk Driving will take part in the program. There will be mocktails, prizes, balloons and music!

HIV Relief Event
Please join us to learn more about the impact of HIV and AIDS in Africa. Bridget Chisenga, from Catholic Relief Services, Zambia will discuss the importance of providing hope through support groups and anti-retroviral therapy adherence (ART) when working with people living with HIV. The event will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 in the library auditorium. The event is sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the Women’s Global Connection and CRS.

Mission Matters Dialogue Series
A panel discussion called Being a Catholic University: Catholic Social Teaching and Beyond will be from 11:50 a.m.-1:10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the library Special Collections Room. A light lunch will be served.Topics to be discussed include Catholic social teaching and English literature; theatre arts, religion and values; community-based learning and vocation; and Catholic studies programs. Event sponsors include the Women's Global Connection and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

President's Spaghetti Dinner prep

Volunteers Needed for President’s Spaghetti Dinner
All employees are invited to volunteer for the president’s annual holiday spaghetti dinner scheduled for 4:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, in Marian Hall Café. Forms were sent to each employees’ e-mail or you can click here to print the form indicating how you can help. Return all forms to the Campus Life Office by Wednesday, Nov. 21. For more information, call 829-6034. Volunteers are needed to:

  • Roll meatballs & silverware on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. (wine and cheese served after we work!)
  • Serve students on Thursday, Nov. 29, and you eat free!
  • Donate dessert - Lots of desserts are needed

Department News

New Catering Director
Richard Morgan would like to announce the addition of Traci Riederer as catering director with Sodexho at the University of the Incarnate Word. Traci has has worked for Aramark in a similar position, the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk and Omni Hotel as catering sales manager and was on the opening team at the Hotel Contessa as director of catering and convention services. Grants Department Website
The website for the Grants Department has been revamped to assist faculty research and write private and federal grant proposals. The new website, at www.uiw.edu/grants, includes necessary forms, grant writing tips and other useful information for faculty who are interested in funding grant projects. We encourage faculty to visit the site and to contact us if they have questions or a project they wish to discuss.

Community News

Entrance Closure Today
The entrance off Broadway that services the Village of the Incarnate Word, the Chapel of the Incarnate Word, the Generalate and drive-throughs to UIW will be closed at 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, for fire hydrant water line installation.Access may be possible late Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Traffic will be able to access the Village through the main entrance in front of the cemetery.

Harassment Free Workplace Sessions
All student employees (work-study, temporary and student employment) are required to attend a session and may use work hours to attend. The last session for the month is 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 in the library auditorium.Additional sessions will be held in January.

Library Adds New Online Research Resource
The Mabee Library announces the addition of a new premiere online resource for research in natural sciences, nursing and pharmacy. A total of 1,100 new titles are available online from the library through the Science Direct Health & Life Sciences College Edition Collection of peer-reviewed journals. This database can be accessed through the Science Direct link on the library’s database list or at the individual journal level through the library’s journals list (click on “DATABASES” or JOURNALS” on the circular UIW logo in the center of the Mabee Library’s webpage). Journals in this database include titles from all fields of science, such as biology, nursing, medicine, chemistry, ecology, pharmacy and more, with back file content going back to 1995.

The database offers several options to scholars wishing to be at the cutting edge of the most recently published research in their area of interest: 

  • Search Alerts is offered as e-mail notification when new documents matching the predefined search criteria become available online.
  • Topic Alerts notify you by e-mail when new documents on a specific topic are available
  • Volume Alerts notify you when a new issue of a particular journal becomes available
  • Citation Alerts notify you when a selected document is cited by new documents on Science Direct.

User guides and interactive tutorials are available online. A complete list of journal titles for this database is available at www.info.sciencedirect.com/content/journals/titles/#college. Subscription to the Science Direct service brings the total number of journal titles available in the library to 48,989! For more information, call the Reference Desk at 829-3835.

Fall Library Hours
Fall semester hours for the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Library are:

  • Monday through Wednesday: 8 a.m. tomidnight
  • Thursday: 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Friday: 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Sunday: 2 p.m.-midnight.

The library will close at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21 and remain closed through Friday, Nov. 23. During finals, the library will offer extended hours:

  • Dec. 3, 4 and 5: 7 a.m.-midnight
  • Dec. 6: 7 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Dec. 7: 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

Deployment of Microsoft Office 2007
The Technology Department will deploy Microsoft Office 2007 to the UIW community between Nov. 12 and Jan. 31. The Office 2007 suite will be installed on employee desktop and laptop computers first, as well as academic computer labs, before we begin supporting students.Deployment will begin with the Mabee Library systems.From there it will progress through other buildings until finished. Directors will be contacted to schedule visits to each department.Depending on the size of the department, deployment may take from one to several days. Efforts will be made to minimize interruptions in your office. During the deployment period, normal technical support services will be maintained. Your patience is appreciated while this challenging deployment is completed. If you have questions about this project, contact Anthony Ramos at aramos@uiwtx.edu.

  • Important:Older computers may not be powerful enough to run Office 2007. If we discover this is the case, written notification will be provided to the director of the affected department, and Office 2007 will not be installed on that system.
  • Training:Microsoft Office 2007 is a significant revision of Office 2003.Training opportunities will be provided both face-to-face and online to assist you in making the transition to the new software.   • Please note: Users of Office 2003 will not be able to read files created by users of Office 2007 unless a) the author of the document saves it as a 2003-compatible file or b) the 2003 users downloads the appropriate conversion program from the technical support services website: ftp://support.uiwtx.edu/Office%202007%20Converters/

The Clean House
The Theatre Arts Department presents the comedy The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl. The play won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for drama. All performances will be in the Cheever Theatre at UIW. Tickets cost Tickets cost $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $8 for non-UIW students and $6 per ticket for groups. The UIW Black Student Association is kicking off the holiday season by selling gourmet cheesecakes and cookie dough. The last day to place an order is noon Thursday, Nov. 14. Volleyball Fundraiser
The UIW volleyball team is holding a fundraiser with help from Delicious Tamales. Orders will be taken until Nov. 30. The tamales will be delivered from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 12 during the men’s basketball game. Tamale choices are pork, jalapeño and bean, and cost $6 a dozen. Toy Drive
The Elf Louise Christmas Project provides toys for less fortunate children in the San Antonio community during the holiday season. Toys will be collected through Friday, Nov. 16 in collection boxes at the Wellness Center and also Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Light the Way ceremony.

Faculty Focus

American Indian Literature lecture
Dr. Matthias Schubnell, chairman of the English Department, spoke to students in a world literature class taught by Leticia Harding, on Wednesday.

High Schools

Father-Daughter Day
On Sunday, Nov. 18, about 500 dads, their IWHS daughters, and guests will convene at the Omni Hotel for Mass, formal dinner, entertainment, and Father-Daughter keepsake pictures. The activities will include a slideshow of dads and their daughters, "then" and "now"; a raffle for prizes including Spurs tickets, San Antonio riverbarge dinner ride, and other prizes.

Eighth Grade Open House
Join us for the St. Anthony Catholic High School Eighth Grade Open House on Sunday, Nov. 18. Please join us for Mass, food and fellowship. The schedule includes community liturgy at 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., lunch at 11:30 a.m., tours beginning at noon, and question and answer sessions in the library every 30 minutes. RSVP is appreciated but not required. SACHS is at 3200 McCullough Ave.

IWHS Food Drive
Incarnate Word High School at 727 E. Hildebrand is doing a food drive for the San Antonio Food Bank. The food bank has delivered five barrels, located in each religion classroom. Our goals are to fill them several times over and to have 100% participation. The drive will continue until Nov. 19.

Don’t Forget – 1st Annual IWHS Golf Tournament

2007 United Way Employee Campaign Update
The United Way Employee Campaign is underway. To date, we have received pledges totaling $14,687.The campaign will run thru Friday, Nov. 16.Our goals are to get 100 percent participation from employees at UIW, IWHS, and SACHS and to increase our pledge total from last year of $21,399. Send your pledge form via campus mail to CPO 296.Remember, it’s not important how much you give, but that you give.Thank you for giving to United Way.
