Military Recruiting Discussion
There will be a discussion titled “Understanding the Psychology of Military Recruiting and Conditioning” sponsored by the UIW Psychology Association at noon today, in AD 242.
Business Club Etiquette Dinner Deadline for Tickets
The UIW Business Club is holding an etiquette dinner Nov. 20 in the Rosenberg Sky Room. Check-in begins at 6 p.m. with mock cocktails, a guest speaker will take the floor as dinner is served at 7 p.m. and closing remarks will be made at 8:30 p.m. All members of the UIW community are invited. Tickets to the dinner will be sold until Nov. 5 and cost $25 per person. Students may use meal cards to buy a ticket. For more information, e-mail leist@uiwtx.edu.
Health Career Fair
Students interested in a career in healthcare should stop by the Student Nurses Association Career Fair from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 in Marian Hall Ballroom. Students can meet representatives from local and regional hospitals, hospice, home care, staffing agencies, recruiters, educational resources and schools. At least 24 hospitals/agencies will be there. There will be door prizes.
Discussion on Torture
“Torture is a Moral Issue,” the Ghosts of Abu Ghraib, is a video and discussion sponsored by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture with an opportunity to sign a statement against the use of torture. The last discussion will be at noon Tuesday, Nov. 6 in the library auditorium, moderated by Sister Martha Ann Kirk.
President’s Spaghetti Dinner
Every year, Dr. Agnese hosts a free spaghetti dinner for students with faculty and staff serving the guests. The event will be from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.Thursday, Nov. 29 in Marian Hall Ballroom.Next week all full-time faculty, staff and administrators will receive a request for assistance via campus mail or click to print the form and return it to the Campus Life Office, CPO 306.For more information, call Janine Chavez at 829-3817. We are also delighted to have help from part-time faculty and staff at this event.
Peace Day Wrap-up
Peace Day was celebrated this week with of educational events realizing that those who want peace must work for justice. The following photos document the event’s success.

The overnight experience “Stop Genocide Now: Camp Darfur,” held Tuesday night, helped students better understand the situation in Darfur, Sudan.

Participants visited Marian Hall Ballroom on Wednesday to enjoy free soup while considering the experience of being hungry.

Dr. Samuelson, a Jewish Holocaust survivor, spoke on the history of the Holocaust and his reflections from that time.

Visitors were able to visit booths promoting different Peace Day-related topics on Wednesday morning.

Psychology Department Hosts Annual Research Colloquium
The 6th Annual Psychology Research Colloquium will be 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Nov. 5 in the Library Auditorium. Guest scholar will be Dr. Douglas K. Snyder from Texas A&M University. Snyder is an internationally renowned clinical psychology scholar. His talk will be from 9-10:15 a.m., and he will discuss his research with therapy for marital infidelity. Dissertation Defense
Chung-Jieh Huang (Jerry) will defend his dissertation at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 in the Joyce Building, Tilton Room. The title of the dissertation is Emotional Intelligence and Leadership in Taiwanese University Students. His dissertation chair is Dr. Absael Antelo.
Women’s Soccer
Congratulations to Women’s Soccer head coach Tina Patterson and the women’s soccer team. A final national poll is out and Incarnate Word’s women’s soccer team has achieved its best showing in school history. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has put the Cardinals in the nation’s fourth spot in its October 30 poll, the final one of the 2007 season. Also, in the NSCAA Midwest Region voting, the Cardinals are in the top spot.

Last Light the Way Workday This Saturday
The last workday for this year’s Light the Way is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Anthony Catholic High School cafeteria (3200 McCullough). If you would like to participate, e-mail gutierre@uiwtx.edu to sign up. Workday hours are subject to change.
Toy Drive
The Elf Louise Christmas Project provides toys for less fortunate children in the San Antonio community during the holiday season. Toys will be collected through Friday, Nov. 16 in collection boxes at the Wellness Center and also Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Light the Way ceremony.
UIW Community Orchestra Concert
The UIW Community Orchestra will hold its first concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 in Our Lady’s Chapel. It will feature the orchestra’s concertmaster, Angela Caporale, in a performance of J.S. Bach's Violin Concerto in A. The concert is free.

Book Discussion
Join Narjis Pierre, the president of the San Antonio Muslim Women’s Association, as she discusses her book, The Hajj Journal, a story about the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam and hopes to build a better future. Foods of the Holy Land will be served. The event is free, but e-mail facmentor@uiwtx.edu if you plan to attend so that food may be prepared for all. American Indian Literature Discussion
Dr. Matthias Schubnell, chair of the English Department, will speak to students in a world literature class taught by Leticia Harding, at 10:30 Wednesday, Nov. 7 in AD 354.Dr. Schubnell’s topic will be “A Native Sense of Nature in American Indian Literature.” Members of the community are welcome to attend.

Faculty Focus
UIW Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program Receives Another Four-Year Grant
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the university a third consecutive four-year McNair Scholars Program grant in the amount of $925,000. Since 1999, the McNair Scholars Program has served outstanding undergraduate scholars. Many of these scholars are now enrolled in graduate programs at various leading universities pursuing advance degrees. For the past eight years, in collaboration with UIW faculty, the program has provided valuable research experiences and academic support to participating students. For the next four years, the program will be under the leadership of Dr. Roberta Leichnitz, as project director and Dr. Kevin Vichcales, dean of the School of Graduate Studies & Research as principal investigator.
