Play Day for Peace
As part of UIW’s Peace Day celebration, children came to play on Dubuis Lawn on Wednesday morning. There were several stations for children to enjoy: a sandbox, water station, a veterinary station (pictured above), a grocery store, a salon and a place where children could participate in a mini-play.

Candlelight Silent Prayer Vigil
There will be a candlelight vigil remembering FranzJagerstatter and praying for wisdom in the face of violence from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in front of the Brackenridge Villa at the Peace Pole sponsored by the Incarnate Word Sisters.

Help the Synchronized Swimming Team
The UIW and Cygnets of San Antonio Synchronized Swimming Teams are putting on their 5th annual Water Show and Silent Auction on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Barshop Natatorium.During the show, you will be able to bid on a variety of items in a silent auction. Shows are at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets cost $7 for adults and $4 for faculty, students and children, and can be purchased at the door or in advance at office 107 in the Natatorium.For more information, call 829-2796.

Discussion on Torture
“Torture is a Moral Issue,” the Ghosts of Abu Ghraib, is a video and discussion sponsored by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture with an opportunity to sign a statement against the use of torture. Times and locations:

  • Oct. 28, Sunday, 2:30 p.m., The Assembly Room of the Village at Incarnate Word, 4707 Broadway, sponsored by the Incarnate Word Sisters Justice and Peace Committee
  • Oct. 30, Tuesday, noon, Marian Hall Ballroom sponsored by Amnesty International, the History Club, and the Political Science Club

Lecture on Media
Bob Rivard, editor of the San Antonio Express-News, will speak on issues relating to the media and freedoms.The lecture covers adventures in living and working south of the border. “War, Murder and Mayhem: A World-Class Cultural Odyssey.” The talk will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 in the ICC Auditorium.All are invited to participate in the discussion.

Depleted Uranium Discussion
Dr. Doug Rokke, a retired major from the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, specialized in nuclear medicine and nuclear, biological and chemical warfare operations during the Gulf War. A depleted uranium expert, Rokke says military personnel are not being protected,veterans are not receiving proper care, and the ongoing use of depleted uranium by the United States is not bringing security, but is “suicidal” for humanity. Discussions will be from9-10:15 a.m.,10:30-11:15 a.m. and3-4:15 p.m. Oct. 30 in Marian Hall Ballroom. For more information, call 829-3854.

Refugee Camp Experience
“Stop Genocide Now: Camp Darfur,” an opportunity for education on the crisis of genocide and poverty, and for those who wish a simulated experience of spending the night in a refugee camp, will start at 6 p.m. Oct. 30. Major General Gale S. Pollock, the Acting Surgeon General of the United States Army and Chief, Army Nurse Corps, spoke at the 2007 Sr. Charles Marie Frank Lecture in the Sky Room on Tuesday.

McCreless Gallery expansion

Library Event
UIW celebrated the 10th anniversary of the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Library dedication and the expansion of the McCreless Art Gallery on Sunday. Included in the gallery expansion were the oldest known image of St. Leonard in the Western Hemisphere and a handmade triptych, a three-piece panel that was used as a portable altarpiece in private devotions.

Jason Small, the deputy director in the Sudan Office of the U.S. Department of State, spoke at a discussion called “Peace or Genocide in Darfur” on Wednesday in the Library Special Collections Room.

Students with Disabilities Organization Underway

Students with Disabilities Organization Underway
Professor Don Ewers and Rachel Cywinski helped plan a new student organization called “Walk, Roll and Read” for students with disabilities. Meetings began this week and will be from 9 -10:30 p.m. every other Thursday in the Burke-O’Mahony Community Room in the Administration Building.

Conscientious Objector Discussion
Susan Ives, a core team member of the San Antonio peaceCENTER, lead a discussion called “Conscientious Objector Franz Jagerstatter, a Saint?” on Thursday. By beatifying Franz Jagerstatter this week, the Catholic Church focused on the story of this person executed for refusing to be in the army and kill others in 1943. Ives is a former army officer and Gulf War veteran. Her latest book is “The Facilitator’s Manual for the Class of Nonviolence.”

Dissertation Defense
Yi-Hsuan Lee defends her dissertation, The Relationship between Situational Leadership Style and Job Satisfaction in Overseas Taiwanese Companies in Mainland China, at 4 p.m. today in the library’s Special Collection Room. Her dissertation chair is Dr. Absael Antelo.

Community Mission Sale
The third annual Community Mission Sale will be Oct. 30 in Dubuis Plaza. If you have “treasures” you would like to donate, please bring them to AD Room 151.

Submit Names of Loved Ones for Memorial Mass
If you would like to include your loved one on the memorial list for the upcoming Memorial Mass on Nov. 1, e-mail the name(s) to Beth Villarreal at villaret@uiwtx.edu. The last day to submit names is Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Ludim Pedroza’s piano recital will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 in Palestrina Hall.

Classical Art Song Recital
A recital of Classical Art Song Music will be presented by UIW’s Music Department at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in Our Lady's Chapel in the administration building. The featured artists will beSydney King, tenor, and Ruth Friedberg, piano. Ruth Friedberg, Professor Emerita of Music,is a retired chair of Music Department. Sydney King is a retired teacher and tenor soloist at First Presbyterian Church. The recital also will include art songs by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Aaron Copland and Jean Berger. Songs will be sung in Russian, English and Spanish. The event is free, and all are welcome.For more information call 829-3858.

GIA Music Choir Reading Session
GIA Publications Inc. is sponsoring a morning of music for choir members and choir directors at UIW from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 27 in Our Lady's Chapel in the administration building.Clinician Bob Batastini and accompanist Bill Gokelman will be working with participants on a packet of music containing GIA choral titles specifically chosen in a variety of musical styles. Last Light the Way Workday Next Saturday

Faculty Focus

Men’s Soccer
Congratulations to Men’s Soccer Head Coach John Smith and the UIW men’s soccer team. The Cardinals are 10-4-1 for the year, and according to a poll released by the NCAA, UIW has moved to a tie for third in the Midwest Region. Four teams will go to the regional tournament, and the UIW team is seeking its sixth consecutive trip to the championship round. There are five games left in the regular season.

1st Annual IWHS Golf Tournament
Incarnate Word High School (IWHS) is hosting their first annual golf tournament at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort Golf Club. A Comedy Night
The St. Anthony Catholic High School Class of 2010 presents “A Comedy Night” from 7 to 11 p.m. Dec. 1 in Marian Hall Ballroom at UIW. Join us for a night of laughter, music, dancing and San Antonio’s best comedians. Tickets are limited and cost $25. They will be available after the October liturgy. The event is limited to ages 21 and older. Proceeds will benefit the Class of 2010. For more information, call 829-2708.

Christmas in October Toy Drive
The first “Christmas in October” Toy Drive is being sponsored by HLA, History Club and Campus Police. Please support us by providing new toys for Elf Louise and the Battered Women’s Shelter. Bring a toy by the Campus Life Office, Campus Police or the History Department. Toys for Elf Louise will be presented at the Light the Way Celebration. The toy drive will run through October.
