Mass at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word
Members of the UIW community honored the heritage of the Chapel of the Incarnate Word on Tuesday. Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, celebrated the Mass.
Bible Study and Theology

Library Event
University of the Incarnate Word invites everyone to the 10th anniversary celebration of the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Library and the expansion of the McCreless Art Gallery from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 in the library reference area. Included in the gallery expansion are the oldest known image of St. Leonard in the Western Hemisphere and a handmade triptych, a three-piece panel that was used as a portable altarpiece in private devotions. UIW Jazz Ensemble News
The 17-member UIW Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jim Waller, will perform a concert at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the 47th Annual Texas Jazz Festival at Heritage Park on the Nueces Electric Co-op Stage (aka The North Stage) in Corpus Christi. This is the ensemble’s second appearance at the Texas Jazz Festival. Jacqueline Sotelo will be the featured vocalist. Admission is free.
Heritage Day Campus Landmark Contest Winners
Groups were charged with finding
all the landmarks on the UIW campus, photographing them and submitting in scrapbook, video or PowerPoint format. The winners of the contest were:

Golden Harvest
Students will be visiting San Antonio neighborhoods to collect nonperishable food items to donate to local charities from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. Items will be collected from areas that received door placards last weekend. Food can be left on your front porch the morning of the collection. If you wish to help, call the Student Government office at 829-3833.

Employee Ceremony
The university recognized all full-time faculty, administrators and employees completing five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 or more years of service at the 14th annual UIW Heritage Day Ceremony on Monday in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word. After the ceremony, there was a reception for all employees at the Brackenridge Villa.

Worshippers also participated in Mass at the Grotto on Monday in celebration of Heritage Day at the university.
Israel-Palestine Conflict Panel Discussion
A panel featuring Anna Baltzer, a Jewish American Fulbright Scholar, Columbia graduate and author, will discuss “The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Why It’s a Central Issue.” The discussion will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 22 in the ICC Auditorium. Sr. Charles Marie Frank Lecture
The 2007 Sr. Charles Marie Frank Lecture with speaker Major General Gale S. Pollock, Acting Surgeon General of the United States Army and Chief, Army Nurse Corps is scheduled for 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the Sky Room.
Darfur Tragedy Lecture
Jason Small, the deputy director in the Sudan Office of the U.S. Department of State will speak on “Peace or Genocide in Darfur” at 3 p.m. Oct. 23 in the UIW Library Special Collections Room.
Discussion on Torture
“Torture is a Moral Issue,” the Ghosts of Abu Ghraib, is a video and discussion sponsored by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture. The event will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the Marian Hall Ballroom. Participants can sign a statement against the use of torture. For information, see www.nrcat.org/about.aspx.
Play Day for Peace
Children are invited to participate in activities on campus hosted by students of the Dreeben School of Education under the direction of Dr. Mary Ruth Moore, an international leader in the value of play in children’s education. The event will be Oct. 24 on Dubuis Lawn or in case of rain, in the Wellness Center.

Director of Fashion Management Presentation
Dr. Sharon Welkey, an interview candidate for the director of the fashion management position, will give a classroom presentation from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the Joyce Building Room 126. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend.
Anti-Harassment Sessions

Banner Budget Training
Tom Duckworth will provide training at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 in G16 for those who look up budget information in Banner. There will be Banner Navigation training at 9:15 a.m. to show users how to get from screen to screen.There are three pre-requisites for the Budget Lookup class:1) Have a Banner account. Supervisor can contact Sandy Givens; 2) Have Banner access to your budget(s). Supervisor can contact Tom Duckworth; 3) Know how to navigate Banner screens. Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk
The Village at Incarnate Word will support the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk '07. The walk begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in Retama Park. If you would like to walk with the team or donate to the Alzheimer’s Association, contact Jan Jarosek, director of Resident Services, at 829-7561 ext. 157 or jan.jarosek@iwretire.org. You can mail your donation to The Village at Incarnate Word, 4707 Broadway, San Antonio, TX 78209. Checks should be made to The Alzheimer’s Association. Cross Country Championships
UIW is hosting the Heartland conference championships for cross country Saturday, Oct. 20 at the San Antonio State School (off of 281/37S. and Pecan Valley Dr.). The women’s 5K run will be at 5:45 p.m. followed by the men’s 8K at 6:30 p.m. The UIW women were picked to win the conference in a pre-season poll in August. The men were picked to finish third. Cooks Needed for Retreats
Campus Ministry is sponsoring two retreats for students. The first is a fall retreat at
H-E-B Foundation Camp on Oct. 26-28. The second retreat is being held in conjunction with the Archdiocese of San Antonio Campus Ministries. It is an ACTS Retreat at Camp TECABOCA in Hunt, Texas, on Nov. 8-11.Cooks are needed for both retreats. Aquatics Commission Director
Congratulations to Dr. Tim Henrich who was elected to his second term as director of the Aquatics Commission of the International Council for Health, Physical, Recreation, Sport and Dance, which is a member organization of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization.
Women’s Soccer
Congratulations to Women’s Soccer Head Coach Tina Patterson and the UIW women’s soccer team. The Cardinals are 12-1-1 for the year, including a Heartland Conference-leading 7-0-0. The women have won 12 consecutive games, one short of the school record set in 1998.In the most recent rankings from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the Cardinals are eighth in the nation for Division II. The Cardinals have been voted the top team in the Midwest Division by the NSCAA.

High Schools
Service Day
On Oct. 19, the 9th grade at IWHS will be learning aboutour heritage, opportunities for service in the communityand doing campus beautification. The 10th grade will be learning more about what service really means from a theological perspective, experiencing Hunger 101 and working with the Sisters where possible. The 11th and 12th grades will be going off campus to a variety of organizations to work that day. Faculty and staff also will participate.
Tailgate Party
St. Anthony Homecoming Tailgate Party will be held before the game against TMI on Oct. 20. Tailgating begins at noon, and the game kicks off at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for ages 13 and older, $10 for children 6-12 and children 5 and younger get in free. The event will have an all-you-can-eat grill. You can buy tickets today from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the library.

Volkswagen Beetle Raffle to support Pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2008
A delegation of 18 students and three administrators have committed to attend World Youth Day in Sydney from July 15-20. To assist them in raising the funds, the group is raffling a Volkswagen Beetle. Raffle tickets cost $5 each, and can be purchased in the Campus Ministry Office in the Chapel Building. The drawing will be Friday, Nov. 30 at a Raffle Party. Photography Exhibit
World renowned photographer Wendy Watriss (www.fotofest.org/wendy.htm), who has documented some of the pain of Agent Orange, will have an exhibit in the Semmes Gallery of the Fine Arts Building until Nov. 16. The exhibit is part of UIW’s Peace Day events.
Christmas in October Toy Drive
The first “Christmas in October” Toy Drive is being sponsored by HLA, History Club and Campus Police. Please support us by providing new toys for Elf Louise and the Battered Women’s Shelter. Bring a toy by the Campus Life Office, Campus Police or the History Department. Toys for Elf Louise will be presented at the Light the Way Celebration. The toy drive will run through October.
