As part of our commitment to helping United Way, UIW participated in the Day of Caring on Friday, Oct. 5.Volunteers spent the day making Christmas stockings and book bags at AVANCE.AVANCE is a private, nonprofit organization whose main purpose is to strengthen and support families.

Motherhouse Chapel Mass
Members of the UIW community are cordially invited to join us in worship at the Motherhouse Chapel at 8:30 a.m.Tuesday, Oct. 16. Celebrating mass is Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix.

Bible Study and Theology
Join the Campus Ministry department every Tuesday night for “Bible Study and Theology on Tap” at 8 p.m. in the Chapel Building Gathering Room. Each week during the gathering they will explore Scripture and Theological topics. For more information, contact (210) 829-3128.

Library Event
University of the Incarnate Word invites everyone to the 10th anniversary celebration of the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Library and the expansion of the McCreless Art Gallery from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 in the library reference area. Included in the gallery expansion are the oldest known image of St. Leonard and a handmade triptych, a three-piece panel that is used as a portable alterpiece in private devotions. Pharmacy School Dedication
The Feik School of Pharmacy celebrates its official opening at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 17. Go to www.uiw.edu/pharmacy/slideshow.html for a preview tour of this state-of-the-art facility.

UIW Jazz Ensemble News
The UIW Jazz Ensemble is a 17-member ensemble directed by Jim Waller. Upcoming concerts include:

  • Thursday, Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m., Palestrina Hall, Fine Arts Building. Admission is free. Recent UIW graduate Jacqueline Sotelo will be the featured vocalist.
  • Saturday, Oct. 20, 3:30 p.m., 47th Annual Texas Jazz Festival at Heritage Park on the Nueces Electric Co-op Stage (aka The North Stage) in Corpus Christi. This is the UIW Jazz Ensemble’s 2nd appearance at the Texas Jazz Festival. Jacqueline Sotelo will be the featured vocalist. Admission is free.

Employee Ceremony

Heritage Day Ceremony
The 14th annual UIW Heritage Day Ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word (Motherhouse). The University will recognize and award all full-time faculty, administrators and employees completing five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 or more years of service. After the ceremony, the university will hold a reception for all employees at the Brackenridge Villa. For more information, call Human Resources at 829-6019.

UIW Heritage Day Campus Landmark Contest
As part of the celebration of Heritage Week, Oct. 15 - 17, the Mission Committee would like to ask individuals, student groups, clubs, organizations, academic areas, etc., to participate in the following contest: Find all the landmarks on the UIW campus, photograph them and submit in scrapbook, video or PowerPoint format. To participate or for questions e-mail Sr. Audrey O’Mahony at audrey@uiwtx.

  • Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place [$100, $75, $50].
  • Criteria for judging: 1. highest number of “landmarks” discovered, 2. clarity of explanation of “landmark,” 3. organization of presentation, 4. creativity of presentation.

Contest Rules:

  • Campus will be defined as all areas from the river to Broadway and will not include areas on the other side of the river.
  • “Landmark” is defined as any statue, historical marker, artifact, tree or other object dedicated to an individual(s) on this area of the campus. Excluded: ALL buildings and building interiors.
  • Participants must submit a photo of the landmark and relevant identifying information. This may be done in scrapbook, video or PowerPoint format.
  • Entries should be clearly marked with participant’s name, phone number and e-mail address and brought to room 151 in the Administration Building by Oct. 17 no later than 9 a.m.
  • Judging will take place on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. Judges’ decisions are final.

UIW Veterans Meeting
The UIW Veterans Association will hold its monthly meeting to discuss how to conduct our upcoming Veterans Day commemoration. The meeting, which is open to everyone, will be from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Bonilla Science Hall Conference Room 234. Refreshments will be served. Sodexho Fall Break Hours of Operation
The following are abbreviated hours for Fall Break. Regular hours resume Monday, Oct. 15.

  • Today: Finnegan's Coffee Shop, 7:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., Marian Hall Café, brunch 11 a.m.-1 p.m., dinner 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. All other operations closed.
  • Oct. 13: Marian Hall Café, brunch 11 a.m.-1 p.m., dinner 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. All other operations closed.
  • Oct. 14: Marian Hall Café, brunch 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., dinner 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. All other operations closed.

Banner Budget Training
Tom Duckworth will provide training at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16 and Thursday, Oct. 25 in G16 for those who look up budget information in Banner. There will be Banner Navigation training at 9:15 a.m. on both days to show users how to get from screen to screen.There are three pre-requisites for the Budget Lookup class:1) Have a Banner account. Supervisor can contact Sandy Givens; 2) Have Banner access to your budget(s). Supervisor can contact Tom Duckworth; 3) Know how to navigate Banner screens. Come at 9:15 to learn.You can register for the navigation and/or the lookup class by contacting Margaret Bright at 805-5845 or bright@uiwtx.edu.

Banner Service Outage Scheduled
The Technology Department will conduct a major upgrade of the Banner (Oracle) database until 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14. Banner services will not be available during this period.The new version of Banner will be available at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15.For more information, call Sandy Givens: 829-3949 (ext. 3949) or e-mail givens@uiwtx.edu.

Anti-Harassment Sessions
All University employees (Administrators, Staff, Faculty (full-time, adjuncts and ADCaP – including part time and temporary) are reminded that attendance at one training session related to anti-harassment this calendar year (2007) is required. If you have attended a training session in 2007, this notice does not apply to you.

The remaining sessions for this year are:

Community News

Pharmacy Dedication Shuttle Service
The pharmacy dedication and blessing for the Feik School of Pharmacy will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the building site. In order to accommodate all the visitors attending this special occasion, shuttle service will be available from the main campus. Shuttle service begins at 9:45 a.m. in front of Marian Hall. The last shuttle to the event will leave at 10:15 a.m.

After the event, shuttle service back to the main campus will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the last run leaving at 12:15 p.m. Parking will not be available on the pharmacy school grounds so we ask that all who want to attend the event from the main campus take the shuttle. The shuttle will be operating as quickly as possible, but let us all remember that patience is a virtue.

Parking Lot Closures
Today, Campus Police will begin blocking off the Mission Plazaand the parking lot by the Administration building and the Generalate for construction work.The cat crossing gate will be closed to ensure no one parks in this area. Employees are asked to park elsewhere after lunch.They anticipate that the closure will last only through the weekend.

Light the Way Workday This Saturday
Two workdays remain for this year’s Light the Way:

  • Saturday, Oct. 13, at the St. Peter’s Prince of the Apostle School cafeteria (112 Marcia Place).
  • Saturday, Nov. 3, at the St. Anthony Catholic High School cafeteria (3200 McCullough).

Cooks Needed for Retreats
Campus Ministry is sponsoring two retreats for students. The first is a fall retreat at H-E-B Foundation Camp on Oct. 26-28. The second retreat is being held in conjunction with the Archdiocese of San Antonio Campus Ministries. It is an ACTS Retreat at Camp TECABOCA in Hunt, Texas, on Nov. 8-11.Cooks are needed for both retreats. Faculty Focus

McNair Scholars Program
Congratulations to Dr. Kevin Vichcales, the dean of graduate studies and research, and the McNair Scholars Program, which won a four-year grant valued at $924,000 from the U.S. Department of Education. This is the third time in a row that UIW has won this award.

High Schools

Service Day
On Oct. 19, the 9th grade at IWHS will be learning aboutour heritage, opportunities for service in the communityand doing campus beautification. The 10th grade will be learning more about what service really means from a theological perspective, experiencing Hunger 101 and working with the Sisters where possible. The 11th and 12th grades will be going off campus to a variety of organizations to work that day. Faculty and staff also will participate.

Tailgate Party
St. Anthony Homecoming Tailgate Party will be held before the game against TMI on Oct. 20. Tailgating begins at noon, and the game kicks off at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for ages 13 and older, $10 for children 6-12 and children 5 and younger get in free. The event will have an all-you-can-eat grill.

Photography Exhibit
World renowned photographer Wendy Watriss (www.fotofest.org/wendy.htm), who has documented some of the pain of Agent Orange, will have an exhibit in the Semmes Gallery of the Fine Arts Building from Oct. 18 to Nov. 16. The exhibit is part of UIW’s Peace Day events.
