UIW Community Prayer Lists

Campus Ministry is updating the UIW Community Prayer lists for this semester. If you or a loved one is in need of prayer and you would like them to be added to the prayer list please e-mail their name to ministry@uiwtx.edu or call (210) 829-2736.

They will also include those who are serving our country in the military.Please include their name, rank, and branch of service. These lists will be updated weekly.Names may be submitted at any time.

UIW Heritage Day Campus Landmark Contest
As part of the celebration of Heritage Week, Oct. 15 - 17, the Mission Committee would like to ask individuals, student groups, clubs, organizations, academic areas, etc., to participate in the following contest: Find all the landmarks on the UIW campus, photograph them and submit in scrapbook, video or PowerPoint format.

  • Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place [$100, $75, $50].
  • Criteria for judging: 1. highest number of “landmarks” discovered, 2. clarity of explanation of “landmark,” 3. organization of presentation, 4. creativity of presentation.

Contest Rules:

  • Campus will be defined as all areas from the river to Broadway and will not include areas on the other side of the river.
  • “Landmark” is defined as any statue, historical marker, artifact, tree or other object dedicated to an individual(s) on this area of the campus. Excluded: ALL buildings and building interiors.
  • Participants must submit a photo of the landmark and relevant identifying information. This may be done in scrapbook, video or PowerPoint format.
  • Entries should be clearly marked with participant’s name, phone number and e-mail address and brought to room 151 in the Administration Building by Oct. 17 no later than 9 a.m.
  • Judging will take place on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. Judges’ decisions are final.

Beetle Raffle

Volkswagen Beetle Raffle Supports Pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2008
World Youth Day, the largest youth event in the world, will be in Sydney from July 15-20, 2008. Organized by the Catholic Church, World Youth Day gathers young people from around the world to build bridges of friendship and hope between continents, peoples and cultures. This year, a delegation of 18 students and three administrators have committed to making the pilgrimage. To assist them in raising the funds, the group is raffling a Volkswagen Beetle (not the one pictured). Raffle tickets cost $5 each and can be purchased in the Campus Ministry Office in the Chapel Building. Heritage Day Ceremony
The 14th annual Incarnate Word Heritage Day Ceremony will be Monday, Oct. 15, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word (Motherhouse). The university will award full-time faculty, administrators and staff employees completing 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 or more years of service. After the Heritage Day Ceremony, the university will hold a reception for all employees of the Incarnate Word community at the Brackenridge Villa. A panel discussion was held by the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee. The panelists, including Sister Yolanda Tarango and Harold Rodinsky, UIW assistant professor of psychology, discussed poverty and homelessness.

Department News

Banner Service Outage Scheduled
The Technology Department will conduct a major upgrade of the Banner (Oracle) database from 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 until 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14. Banner services will not be available during this period.The new version of Banner will be available at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15.For more information, call Sandy Givens: 829-3949 (ext. 3949) or e-mail givens@uiwtx.edu.

Business Office request
With the scheduled outage of Banner, the Business Office requests that the UIW community process any transactions (petty cash, check cashing, etc.) before 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10. This will allow us to comply with the time scheduled for the Banner outage.

National Association of Teachers of Singing
The UIW Music Departmentwillhost the annual meeting of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, South TexasChapter on Saturday, Oct. 6, in the Fine Arts Building. The National Association of Teachers of Singing Inc. is the largest association of teachers of singing in the world. The fall meeting will have a presentation by Professor Paula Homer, the director of North Texas State Opera, a business meeting and Master class by Metropolitan Opera Soprano Mary Jane Johnson. Faculty and students from 13 universities as well as several public schools and private studios will participate. For more information, call Professor Bussineau-King at829-3858.

Blackboard Training
The Department of Instructional Technology is expanding Blackboard training opportunities to include both novice and advanced users. Training will be offered during fall break, Oct. 11 and 12. Classes are from 8 a.m. until noon in room 230 of the Mabee Library. The Oct. 11 class will introduce users to Blackboard content planning and management, group management, and modifying the course shell. This course is designed for first-time users of Blackboard or new users who would like to further develop their Blackboard skills. An advanced course will be offered Oct. 12. This course will include instruction regarding synchronous and asynchronous learning tools including chat, discussion boards and wikis. There will also be a segment featuring a new upgrade to the grade book, called the Early Warning System. This feature alerts instructors if a student is in danger of failing. UIW Weight Watchers program
Anyone interested in participating in the second session of the UIW Weight Watchers program is welcomed to call Terri Sosa at 829-3126. At the first session, the group lost close to 200 pounds. The meetings will be in the Health Center on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome.

Anti-Harassment Sessions
All University employees (Administrators, Staff, Faculty (full-time, adjuncts and ADCaP – including part time and temporary) are reminded that attendance at one training session related to anti-harassment this calendar year (2007) is required. If you have attended a training session in 2007, this notice does not apply to you.

Crimes of the Heart
The Theatre Arts Department presents, Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley. The play is a comedy with dark edges that wrestles with the maddening yet unshakable bond of sisterhood. Crimes of the Heart won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982. The production is co-directed by George and Sidney Burnette.

All performances are scheduled in the Coates Theatre. Remaining performance dates and times:

Faculty Focus

McNair Scholar News
Four McNair Scholars attended the 11th Annual MKN McNair Heartland Research Conference Sept. 21-23 in Kansas City, Mo., where they presented their summer research projects. The presenters included:  Guadalupe Aguirre, mentored by Dr. Roger Barnes, who presented her research titled “Mental Retardation and the Death Penalty”; Erica Alfaro, mentored by Dr. Sara Tallarovic, who presented her research titled “Jamming During Social Interactions in Eigenmannia virescens”; Cynthia Barrón-Tevelenkova, mentored by Prof. Joseph Bravo, who presented her research titled “Marxism and the Formalist Aesthetic”; and Soraida Portales, mentored by Dr. Anita Anderson, who presented her research titled “A Comparison of Samples in the Women’s Health Journal and the Journal of Health Psychology.”

McNair Scholar Carlo Reyes from the HEB School of Business was invited to attend the University of Alabama Graduate School Preview Days Sept. 19-21.  His mentor is professor Sara Jackson.

The 12th Annual Rocky Mountain McNair Scholars Research Symposium was held Sept. 27-30 this year in Fort Collins, Colo. Four McNair Scholars attended and presented their summer research projects. They included: Adrianna Barrón, whose research is titled “Germany and EU Immigration: A Model for the U.S.?” Ms. Barrón’s mentor for this project is professor Sara Jackson. Devin Bedford presented her research titled “Ripped and Revised: The Music Industry and Legal World Response to Digital Piracy.” Ms. Bedford’s mentor was Dr. Jennifer Jones. Annie López presented her research titled “Voices from the Past: The Story of a Mexican American Neighborhood.” Her mentor for this project was Dr. Patricia Gower. The final presenter was Belinda Santos, whose project was titled “Undocumented Hispanic Workers: Do Spanish Speakers Have Automatic In-group Status?” Her mentor was Dr. Harold Rodinsky.

Two McNair Scholars were invited to participate in the McNair and SSS Senior Retreat Sept. 28-30 at Lake Lawn Resort, Delevan, Wis. This retreat is designed to help college seniors prepare applications for graduate school.  Each participant had to arrive with three graduate school applications in hand. Our two lucky McNair Scholars spent the weekend working with Donald Asher, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the graduate admissions process.  Guadalupe Aguirre, Dr. Roger Barnes—mentor, and Cynthia Barrón-Tevelenkova, Dr. John Velásquez and Prof. Joseph Bravo—mentors, were the two lucky McNair Scholars to attend the workshops with students from around the country and Puerto Rico.

High Schools

1st Annual Golf Tournament
Incarnate Word High School (IWHS) is hosting their first annual golf tournament at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort Golf Club (9800 Hyatt Resort Drive).

All of the proceeds from the tournament will benefit the IWHS athletic programs, including improvements to the athletic facilities. Sponsor packages begin at $150. Breast Cancer Awareness
IWHS is raising money for the Susan Komen Foundation by offering our students the chance to wear pink shirts and jeans instead of their uniforms on Oct.9. The price is $5, and the money will be donated to the foundation.The rest of the week, the school will be selling pink bracelets to raise money.

There will be a Breast Cancer Awareness assembly Oct. 9. Two cancer survivors (one is an alumna) will tell their stories, emphasizing the support their daughters provided, what the treatments meant for them, and the need to encourage family members at risk to be vigilant.The wife of a science teacher, a cancer researcher, will speak on how foundations and the money donated help make advancements in medicine possible. A representative from the foundation also will speak.

Service Day
On Oct. 19, the 9th grade at IWHS will be learning aboutour heritage, opportunities for service in the communityand doing campus beautification. The 10th grade will be learning more about what service really means from a theological perspective, experiencing Hunger 101 and working with the Sisters where possible. The 11th and 12th grades will be going off campus to a variety of organizations to work that day. Faculty and staff also will participate.

St. Anthony Catholic School / Monte Vista Neighborhood Centennial 5K Fun Run
St. Anthony Catholic School is proud to celebrate 100 years of quality education. Everyone is invited to register for the 9th Annual Monte Vista 5K Run/Walk on Saturday. Oct. 6.
