Remembering 9/11
Father Phillip Lamberty, O.P. addressed students, faculty and staff members during a prayer service for the victims of September 11 on Tuesday.

Heritage Week
The annual Heritage Week celebration is scheduled for Oct. 15-17. More details will be forthcoming.

UIW Community Prayer Lists
Campus Ministry is updating the UIW Community Prayer lists for this semester. If you or a loved one is in need of prayer and you would like them to be added to the prayer list please e-mail their name to ministry@uiwtx.edu or call 210-829-2736.

They will also include those who are serving our country in the military. Please include their name, rank, and branch of service. These lists will be updated weekly. Names may be submitted at any time.

Championship Winner
Sonia Gonzales, UIW secretary for the Universe Online, proudly displays her Spurs Championship basketball. Gonzales’ name was drawn from over 250 entries for the ball that was raffled off at the Wordstock festival.

Hispanic Heritage Month
The Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will be held Sept. 15 - Oct. 15. Please contact Nilsa Villa Padilla (villapad@uiwtx.edu), President of the Hispanic Latino Association if you are planning/hosting events for Hispanic Heritage Month. She will add your events to their calendar.

Constitution Day is Monday
The UIW community is invited to attend the 3rd Annual Constitution Day event at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17 in the Mabee Library Auditorium. Judge Emilio Garza, of the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals will give a brief presentation on the Constitution followed by a discussion.

Study Abroad Fair
The UIW community is invited to attend the Study Abroad Fair from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20 in the Marian Hall Ballroom. Women’s Global Connection
The Women’s Global Connection will hold a Cross-Cultural Forum for Professional Development from 9 a.m. – noon on Saturday, Sept. 29, in the International Conference Center Conference Hall (847 E. Hildebrand).

During the event, presenters will discuss their participation and cross-cultural experiences in the Reach Out Africa service and research program. To register, contact (210) 832-3208.

UIW Heritage Day Campus Landmark Contest
As part of the celebration of Heritage Week, Oct. 15 - 17, the Mission Committee would like to ask individuals, student groups, clubs, organizations, academic areas, etc., to participate in the following contest: Find all the landmarks on the UIW campus, photograph them and submit in scrapbook, video or PowerPoint format.
• Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place [$100, $75, $50].
• Criteria for judging: 1. highest number of “landmarks” discovered, 2. clarity of explanation of “landmark,” 3. organization of presentation, 4. creativity of presentation.
Contest Rules:
• Campus will be defined as all areas from the river to Broadway and will not include areas on the other side of the river.
• “Landmark” is defined as any statue, historical marker, artifact, tree or other object dedicated to an individual(s) on this area of the campus. Excluded: ALL buildings and building interiors.
• Participants must submit a photo of the landmark and relevant identifying information. This may be done in scrapbook, video or PowerPoint format.
• Entries should be clearly marked with participant’s name, phone number and e-mail address and brought to room 151 in the Administration Building by Oct. 17 no later than 9 a.m.
• Judging will take place on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. Judges’ decisions are final.

Original Designs
Students from the Fashion Design and Merchandising program received a visit this week from renowned fashion designer Richard Covalin.

New Hours for Media Center
The Media Center has adjusted its hours of operation.The new hours are as following:
Monday – Thursday 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Saturday 1 – 5 p.m.
Sunday 2 – 10 p.m.

The Media Center will accommodate students during the week leading up to finals so that students can have Media Center resources available to work on assignments, projects, etc.

Musical Internships
The Music Department is proud to announce the successful completion of internships for four senior students graduating this fall.

Devin Bedford interned at Warner Brothers owned Word Records in Nashville, Tennessee in the A&R (Artist and Repertoire) Department. Jesus Davila did his internship in the Music Department of the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show, which airs Monday through Friday on ABC-TV. DeeAnn Llamas interned at Disney Radio in San Antonio and Fabian Vela worked at the Texas Music Office in Austin.

All four students received very high praise from their site-supervisors along with an “A” grade.




 


Community News

Fond Farewell
Please join Sodexho for a farewell reception today, Sept. 14, from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the Marian Hall Student Lounge for Catering Director Edward Yduarte, who is leaving UIW for a new position in Edinberg, Texas. All are invited. Refreshments will be served.

Siren Alert Tests
Today, from 4 - 4:30 p.m. the University will test the new siren alarm. Please be aware that numerous tests will occur during that time period.

Monday Night Football
Football Fanatics Monday Night Football is back at Java on the Hill. Swing by this Monday, Sept. 17, from 7:30 – 10:30 p.m. to watch the Washington Redskins take on the Philadelphia Eagles. Enjoy hot appetizers and drink specials all night. Don't forget to stop by before the game to watch our next round of our 2008 Madden Challenge.

Flu Shots
Flu shots will be available from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 and from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The flu shots clinics will be on the second floor of the School of Nursing. Cost is $25.00 payable in cash or check made out to UIW. Supplies are limited. You must call (210) 829-3126 to make a flu shot appointment.

England Presentation
Bill Carleton, UIW chair department of human performance, presented at an August conference at York St. John University in York, England.

Carelton, who was selected to present by his peers presented an abstract entitled “The Spiritual Impact of Teaching a Required College Wellness Course.”

SACHS principal and Congressman Bonilla
Flag of Honor
Henry Galindo, SACHS principal, says a few words of appreciation after being presented a United States flag from Congressman Charlie Gonzales. The flag which was given to the high school flew over the Texas Capital.

St. Anthony Catholic High School

Blessing of the Animals
St. Anthony Catholic High School (SACHS) will hold their annual Blessing of the Animals event at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30. All pets are welcome to attend, please be sure to make sure they have the appropriate restraint (i.e. leash, cage, etc.).

Incarnate Word High School

1st Annual Golf Tournament
Incarnate Word High School (IWHS) is hosting their first annual golf tournament at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort Golf Club (9800 Hyatt Resort Drive).

All of the proceeds from the tournament will benefit the IWHS athletic programs, including improvements to the athletic facilities. Sponsor packages begin at $150. St. Anthony Catholic School / Monte Vista Neighborhood Centennial 5K Fun Run
St. Anthony Catholic School is proud to celebrate 100 years of quality education.
Everyone is invited to register for the 9th Annual Monte Vista 5K Run/Walk on Saturday. Oct. 6.

There will be a Children’s Run followed by the 5K RUN/WALK. Cash prizes and medals will be awarded for the top men, women and junior runners. For more information, visit http://www.stanthonysa.org/.

Trip to Ethiopia
Jim Sorenson, UIW professor of nursing, will be leading a trip to Ethiopia May 30 – June 13, 2008. All are welcome. The trip will be a safari to historic sites in that country, with visits to Axum, where the Ark of the Covenant is supposed to reside, to the Queen of Sheba’s bath, to Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile River, and more.
