Mission

Weekday Liturgies
Weekday liturgy services will resume beginning next week. If you would like to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation please see Fr. Philip after Mass or call him @ 829-3131 to make an appointment.

Meet the Mission
Next Friday, Sept. 7, Approximately 40 faculty members and 250 freshmen students will participate in a day of philanthropy taking a break from text books to roll up their sleeves and give back to the San Antonio community. For the fourth year in a row, members of the UIW community will participate in this day of service. The event is part of the UIW Meet the Mission program. The program encourages UIW faculty, students and staff to reach out to the San Antonio community by helping others in need and thus remembering the foundation for which the University was established in 1881.

This year, the UIW group will team up with 25 non-profit agencies including Travis Park Methodist Church, the SAMM Shelter, the Salvation Army, the San Antonio Food Bank and the San Antonio Children’s Shelter. The group will also visit a number of agencies that the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word have historically supported including St. PJ’s Children’s Home and St. Mary Magdalen-St. Vincent De Paul.

Another new aspect of the program will be how the groups travel to the various agencies. The majority of the groups will take the bus to reach their destinations. This form of transportation will not only allow the University to save on rising gas prices but will allow the students to learn about San Antonio’s public transportation system, an area that most of the students participating have never experienced. The participants will depart from the UIW campus at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Friday and will return to the University at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Second Sunday Liturgy

Due to final renovations, the Chapel of the Incarnate Word will not hold a second Sunday Liturgy during September. The next second Sunday Liturgy in the Chapel will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14.

Mark Your Calendars
The annual Heritage Week celebration is scheduled for Oct. 15-17. More details will be forthcoming.

Red Alert: New Emergency Notification Program
UIW officials strongly encourage students, faculty and staff to enroll in Red Alert, an emergency text and email messaging service. Red Alert enables UIW representatives to quickly communicate with you in case of an emergency via email to your Cardinal Mail account and a text message to your cell phone.

Red Alert is an opt-in service provided by UIW. If we enroll as many members of the UIW community as possible, we will have significantly increased our ability to communicate important safety-related announcements as quickly as possible. To enroll, go to www.getrave.com/login/uiw. You will need to use your Cardinal Mail username and password to log in; follow the instructions on the first page of the website. If you encounter difficulties with the registration process, contact the UIW Help Desk at 2721 for assistance. Please note that you may be charged for Red Alert test and notification messages, depending on your cellular plan.

UIW respects your privacy; we will never use Red Alert except to deliver critical information such as campus emergencies or weather-related closings. Our goal is to ensure that all members of the UIW community feel as safe and secure as possible here. But it is essential for you to take the first step: enroll in Red Alert to help us notify you if an emergency should arise. Tell your friends in the UIW community about Red Alert.

Faculty Focus

The Benefits of Ginger
Dr. Suk Bin Kong, UIW professor of chemistry and Dr. Harvey Schwertner, Director of Clinical Research Laboratory at Wilford Hall Medical Center, U.S. Air Force, co-presented at the American Chemical Society National Conference in Boston in August. The research was related with chemicals from ginger powder that is widely used as a dietary supplement for treating motion sickness and nausea associated with pregnancy. A major pungent component of ginger possesses a number of interesting pharmacological properties. This study was supported by the U.S. Air Force and the presentation was possible with the faculty development fund from UIW.
