sr. martha ann parliament 2015

Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, professor of religious studies, led the forum on “Beyond Words: an Interfaith Ritual for Peace” choreographed by Carla De Sola at the Parliament of the World's Religions, the oldest and the largest interfaith gathering in the world which drew people of about 50 faiths from 80 countries to Salt Lake City, Utah, Oct. 15-19, 2015. “Beyond Words” involved religious leaders of different faiths pouring water together symbolic of the deep underground river of common spiritual ideas such as compassion. Gestures from Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam were woven together by the Omega West Dance Company. The Parliament advocated global ethics concerned with care for the earth, the vulnerable, and building peace through justice.  War and preparation for war, not only hurts people, but these are some of the most devastating things for the earth's resources.

Mabee Library presents Farhad's Film Series
The Mabee Library presents Banking Nature from 2 – 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the Mabee Library, Room 221. The film investigates the commercialization of the natural world. Protecting our planet has become big business with companies promoting new environmental markets. This involves species banking, where investors buy up vast swathes of land, full of endangered species, to enable them to sell "nature credits". Companies whose actions destroy the environment are now obliged to buy these credits and new financial centers have sprung up, specializing in this trade. Many respected economists believe that the best way to protect nature is to put a price on it. But others fear that this market in nature could lead to companies having a financial interest in a species' extinction. There are also concerns that, like the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008, the market in nature credits is bound to crash. And there are wider issues at stake. What guarantees do we have that our natural inheritance will be protected? And should our ecological heritage be for sale? For more information, please contact Farhad Moshiri at moshiri@uiwtx.edu or 210-829-3842.
