The UIW community gathered together on Monday, Aug. 3, in Our Lady’s Chapel for a special mass honoring Dr. Louis Agnese’s 30th anniversary. Dr. Agnese arrived on the Incarnate Word campus in August 1985. At that time, Incarnate Word College offered 56 majors with an enrollment under 1,300. Today, UIW offers 80 academic programs including doctoral and professional programs serving nearly 10,000 students.

Mass of the Holy Spirit
In keeping with a long tradition dating from the founding of the great European universities in the Middle Ages, UIW celebrates the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the start of each academic year. During the liturgy we ask for the inspiration, guidance, and presence of God's Spirit on all of our campus activities. This festive event gathers the entire university community together to rededicate ourselves to UIW's mission, to renew friendships, and to welcome new members. The Mass of the Holy Spirit will be celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at noon in Our Lady's Chapel.

Red Dress Committee Meeting
8am-9am, Friday, Aug. 14, in Boardroom 1, ICC
The Red Dress Committee is a cross-disciplinary group open to all UIW faculty and staff. We organize and run the UIW Red Dress Event each February to help promote heart health awareness. This event includes a health fair and student fashion show. We are open to new ideas and suggestions from all disciplines in the UIW community. Please attend the meeting if you are interested. Retirement Celebration
Join the Office of Campus Life from 3:30 – 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14 in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Keith Tucker and Marveen Mahon, R.N. from UIW. Collectively, they have served our UIW community in the Campus Life department for more than 60 years. All faculty, staff and administrators are welcome to bid farewell, reminisce and celebrate all they have contributed to UIW.

Photo Database Update – All Employees Welcome
In an effort to keep the employee photo database up-to-date, new administrators, faculty members and anyone who would like a new photo for the Office of Communications and Marketing database is asked to stop by the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room on Friday, Aug. 14 during the Full-time Faculty Opening Workshop and Luncheon. A professional photographer will be on hand to take your headshot. These photos will be available to you if you need to submit a headshot for a publication, and they will be used by each department for their own purposes. Special Event and Announcement Submissions
Please remember to submit your events to the Office of Communications and Marketing for inclusion in the Word Today and the Friday e-newsletter. Per university policy, we can only promote events submitted via the “Request for Event Promotion” form found at: http://www.uiw.edu/pr/preventform.html. The form must be submitted no less than 5 working days prior to the event. We will begin regular daily distribution of the Word Today and Friday e-Newsletter on Monday, Aug. 10. Friday Parking Notice
Beginning Monday August 17, Economy (C Permits) and Free (A Permits and AT permits) will no longer be valid in Premium lots (east of the river) on Fridays from 8 a.m., to 5 p.m., while fall and spring semester classes are in session. Faculty, staff and students holding Economy and Free permits should follow the same parking schedule Monday through Friday.
The university is making this change because the demand for Premium parking has increased, Friday class attendance has increased and we are losing 67 Premium parking spaces during the construction of the new Student Engagement Center.

The parking lot in front of the Fine Arts Building will be reserved for new students and parents attending orientation. Employees are asked to park in the Agnese-Sosa garage or behind the Barshop Natatorium on Wednesday, Aug. 12

Paulina H. Mazurek, assistant director, University Events and Student Programs and Dr. David Ortiz, founding director of the Graduate Support Center and assistant professor attended the Omega Delta Phi National Conference held at the Tropicana Hotel, San Antonio Saturday, July 25. Omega Delta Phi is the newest fraternity at UIW and will work to begin to forming UIW’s Multicultural Greek Council. Dr. Ortiz is serving as the fraternity’s on campus faculty advisor.

New full-time faculty mentoring program
Dr. Brian McBurnett and Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, co-chairs of the Mentoring Program, welcome New Full-Time Faculty on Monday, Aug., 10 in the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library Special Collections Center. EXTENDED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
EAP will hold a ribbon cutting and grand opening for its new Corpus Christi ADCaP Center, beginning at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 19. The center, located at 5350 S. Staples Street, Suite 300 is in the heart of Corpus Christi’s south side and easily accessible from all areas of town. A reception with the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce will follow at the center from 6-7:30 pm.
The 7,500 square-foot facility has five classrooms and a state of the art computer lab, as well as a student lounge and faculty lounge area. The center is staffed by a full-time advisor and Director of Operations from 9 -6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Undergraduate classes will be held from 5:30-10 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. Graduate classes will be held from 5:30-9:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays.

Employee Lunch & Learn: True Colors
The Employee Wellness Committee is hosting an employee lunch and learn from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7, in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Marveen Mahon, director of health services, and Dr. Keith Tucker, director of counseling, present the True Colors workshop. True Colors is a human relations model that incorporates simple techniques developed from leading-edge research. It is based on motivational characteristics inherent in each individual, personally and professionally. These universal techniques are the result of research based on the psychological personality types of Dr. Carl Jung, Isabel Briggs-Meyers, David Kiersey and Don Lowry. The True Colors system uses colors to identify four distinct perspectives and personalities. Identifying our own preferred personality style is the first step to increasing self-awareness, to gaining greater control over our responses and improving our capability to initiate effective communication. Open Swimming for Faculty and Staff
Make a splash this summer with employee-only open swim. Running until Thursday, Aug. 13, open swimming will take place from 5 – 7 p.m., on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Incarnate Word High School campus pool located behind the school One lane will be open for lap swimming while two lanes will be reserved for a circuit of exercise classes. Tuesdays, an instructor will teach a water aerobics class. Thursdays, the lanes will have instructions and equipment for circuit workouts to be completed at your own pace. This program is free to all UIW, IWHS and SACHS faculty and staff (you must have your ID to enter). No family members or guests are allowed. - Concert – 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5: Catholic musicians and recording artists David Kauffman and William Gokelman, UIW professor of music, will present a concert at SACHS. Together they have produced 7 cd's written a musical, and co-composed an award winning Mass setting, Mass of Renewal. You will not want to miss this night of prayer, song and story. - Partners for Good with SACHS – From 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12: Goodwill Industries of San Antonio will place donation trailers on the SACHS campus. Each full truck will result in up to $1,000 for the school. This year, Goodwill is also accepting furniture donations. All donations to Goodwill will be used for re-sale in their stores to fund their exceptional educational programs and services. It’s win-win collaboration for SACHS and Goodwill Industries.
