More lights, more food, more holiday fun made for an unforgettable evening
San Antonio – The beautiful night sky provided the perfect backdrop for the University of the Incarnate Word’s (UIW) 2018 Light the Way Holiday Festival sponsored by H-E-B. A record-setting crowd of 10,000 attended the event held Saturday, Nov. 17 on the UIW campus (4301 Broadway.) This year’s festival opened earlier than ever at 3 p.m., giving guests the opportunity to enjoy the campus and various activities prior to the start of the annual ceremony, which began at 6 p.m.
A highlight of the evening occurred as Mariana Barron-Esper, president of the UIW Student Government Association (SGA), Edward Clark, SGA senator and 2018 Homecoming King, and UIW mascot Red the Cardinal flipped the switch illuminating the campus with nearly a million twinkling lights. at 9 p.m., a fireworks finale topped off the evening ending a day filled with holiday fun.
UIW President Dr. Thomas M. Evans welcomed the community and special guests, which included H-E-B Public Affairs Manager Julie Bedingfield and Sr. Margaret Snyder, CCVI, a member of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word’s Leadership Team, who opened the evening with a prayer.
Guests were also treated to a holiday show featuring performances by the UIW Cardinal Chorale, the UIW Wind Ensemble, Incarnate Word High School Madrigals, the UIW Spirit Team and bands featuring UIW students and alumni. Attendees also enjoyed a Food Truck Yard, sponsored by the San Antonio Food Truck Association, which featured a variety of food and dessert options and a Holiday Shoppe with over 40 local vendors. Families stopped by the Kids’ Corner where children took selfies with Santa, met Red the Cardinal and enjoyed activities and fun from BIRD Bakery, The DoSeum, Fun 4 Alamo Kids and San Antonio Plastic Bricks, Inc. Nearly 300 gallons of complimentary hot cocoa was provided to guests by Sodexo.
UIW Alumni and their guests also enjoyed alumni-exclusive events in the Student Engagement Center, which included a special reception, movie screening and a private opportunity to snap selfies with Santa and Red the Cardinal.
