An open letter from Dr. Lou Agnese to the UIW community

Dear Friends:

Let me take this opportunity to address the recent off-campus shooting of UIW student Cameron Redus.

First, I want to extend my deepest condolences to Cameron’s family and friends. I hope to meet with Cameron’s family at an appropriate place and time of their choosing in the near future.

Like many of you, I’ve spent the last few days trying to digest what happened. This has been such a terrible shock and we are all still processing this tragedy.

It’s had a profound impact on all of us because Incarnate Word is such a close-knit, nurturing community. Cameron was a popular student who was well-liked by faculty and students, many of whom have spoken eloquently about him. It’s never easy to accept the loss of a shining star like Cameron.

We understand your frustrations about the speed of the investigation and the way things have unfolded. You have my assurance that UIW is assisting authorities in every way possible so they can complete a swift investigation. I am committed to a full review of our safety practices.

In the meantime, Counseling Services has trained counselors to work on a wide range of concerns including grief and loss, trauma, and anxiety. They can work with any current UIW student, faculty or staff member. They can be reached at 832-5656. University Mission and Ministry, which works closely with Counseling Services, also provides support and guidance for the UIW community during times of crisis.

We ask for your continued prayers as we learn the circumstances of what happened. We also appreciate your calls and emails. Please know that your concerns are shared with all of us on the university’s senior leadership team. Finally, we will do our best to keep you posted as information becomes available.

With kindest personal regards,
