UIW Pharmacy Class of 2016 Honored at White Coat Ceremony

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word’s (UIW) Feik School of Pharmacy (FSOP) honored the Class of 2016 with a White Coat Ceremony, Friday, Sept. 28 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg SkyRoom on the UIW campus.

The White Coat Ceremony symbolizes the commitment of first-year pharmacy students to their profession as they don their white coats for the first time and take an oath pledging their devotion to providing the best patient care possible.

Donna S. Wall, Pharm D, BCPS and vice president of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education’s (ACPE), board of directors served as this year’s keynote speaker. Walls is a clinical pharmacist for Indiana University Health at Indiana University Hospital. She has served as a member of the Indiana Board of Pharmacy for 12 years and is past-president of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). Wall served as the board liaison to the ACPE CPE Commission from 2009-2011 and was appointed to the ACPE Board of Directors by NABP.

Dr. Arcelia Johnson-Fannin, founding dean of the Feik School of Pharmacy presented the class to the community as each student was presented their white coat by FSOP faculty, adjunct faculty and selected pharmacists.

“We want our students to understand that their journey through the pharmacy profession began the moment they walked through our doors,” said Johnson-Fannin. Their commitment to the care and safety of our health begins now. The white coat ceremony makes public this promise.”

Established in 2006, the Feik School of Pharmacy is the only private school of pharmacy in Texas. It is a state-of-the-art facility at the forefront of pharmacy education. The School of Pharmacy embraces the Mission of the university as it develops student scholars dedicated to impacting the future health care needs of the community in San Antonio and South Texas. The Doctor of Pharmacy program at UIW’s Feik School of Pharmacy, was awarded candidate accreditation status in June 2007 and graduated its first class in Spring 2010.
